This statement concerns the Blackboard systems:

It does not cover the user-provided content that is uploaded to Blackboard.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen except where content has been created by a user in such a way to not make this possible (for example within a non-responsive table)
  • Navigate the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible is the website

The accessibility of content uploaded onto Blackboard may vary between modules and content creators. You may find for example:

  • that some images shown within courses do not have alternate text
  • that some text entered into courses using tables does not re-flow when the browser is resized or text size increased.
  • that recorded videos do not have subtitles/captions
  • that you may not always be able to skip to the main content when using a screen reader

You can visit the Blackboard support website for full details on the accessibility options available.

What we do about known issues

We work to achieve and maintain WCAG 2.1 AA standards, but it is not always possible for all our content to be accessible. Where content is not accessible, we will state a reason, warn users and offer alternatives.

Current known issue

The update to Ultra Base Navigation (UBN) (July 10 2023) has an impact on the ability to "deep link" to content pages in Original Style Blackboard courses.  After the UBN update it is only possible to retrieve a link to the course home page for Original style courses from the browser address bar.  While it is still possible to retrieve links to content items, it is not recommended as students/staff lose the main system navigation when using that type of link.
