Exploring how AI tools can help increase high-quality health content

Advancements in generative AI are proving to be immensely helpful to creators throughout the video ideation and creation process. At YouTube Health, in close partnership with the Health AI team within Google Research, we’re exploring ways for this technology to uniquely support our partners in the health care space.

Over the past few months, we’ve been testing AI tools with a small number of health creators and organizations in an effort to make it even easier for them to publish authoritative, high-quality content. Specifically, we’re experimenting with using AI as a brainstorm partner for video ideas, to organize peer-reviewed scientific information, and suggest ways to present information in engaging and accessible ways for different audiences.

Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Jen Caudle are two of our testers helping provide feedback as we pilot these tools. We’re excited to share their initial thoughts and examples of the content they’ve been able to produce so far. We hope to share more about this tool in the coming months as we continue development!

YouTube: Thank you so much for helping us pilot and test this suite of AI features! Backing up a little bit, what are the biggest challenges you face when it comes to making YouTube content?

Amanda Todorovich, Executive Director of Digital Marketing, Cleveland Clinic: Our challenges are at the front and tail end of the video creation process. Ideation is an area that can be challenging. We always strive to make data-driven decisions, so ideation means we’re tapping into a variety of sources to gather what’s needed. This can be a time-consuming effort, and we’re constantly looking for ways to make it more efficient. Another challenge is our approval pipeline. Every video we create is reviewed and approved by a Cleveland Clinic medical professional. This is an important part of making sure our content is medically accurate and up to date. And, while our medical professionals are always willing to help us, it's critical that we are cognizant of their time — since patient care is their primary role.

Dr. Jen Caudle: On top of being a content creator, I continue to practice medicine and see patients. I'm always looking for timely health topics to share with my audience. When I create my health content I spend a lot of time sourcing evidence-based factual information to write my scripts and shoot videos. One of the biggest challenges includes the time it takes to gather the information I need.

Tell us, how has it been so far testing out AI tools for content creation? Have you found it helpful?

Cleveland Clinic: We’ve found the AI tools can be especially helpful in our ideation stage. We love how it pulls data from both YouTube and search engine results to suggest relevant content ideas, allowing us to cut down the amount of time it takes to research new topics. The AI tools also add value by providing topics and sample questions for interviews. This is the most beneficial to us when we’re scripting our expert interviews questions and podcast discussions.

Dr. Caudle: It's been great! So far, this AI tool has been very helpful providing topic ideas and well-sourced information for me to use in my videos. One thing I loved is that when I entered the topic I was interested in, the tool generated a number of sub-topics that I could choose from. This helped me generate ideas and think creatively. Also, I really like that I could choose which tasks I wanted to do- from generating a video outline to writing a script and more.

Let’s look at a specific video you’ve recently published. Walk us through how AI tools supported you in the process of making it?

Cleveland Clinic: We’re recently creating more content for YouTube Shorts and nutrition content always performs well for us. Knowing that, we researched nutrition topics with AI tools and found magnesium videos were in demand. From there, we were able to dive deeper into the topic and find out specifically what people were interested in to create a new video. The data provided by the tool helped shape a script for our expert to review, saving us time and making sure our end product was as robust as possible.

Dr. Caudle: I used the feature to help me create this recent Short, sharing tips for supporting mental health. My audience on YouTube is wide-ranging, and most of them aren’t medical experts, so it’s important that the information in my videos is both clinically-sound and easy to understand. I was able to select the length of the script, vet that the information was from authoritative sources, and even adjust the tone so that it matched my style and audience.
