Mount Quena (Japanese: ピュアズロック Pures Rock) is an animated series-exclusive location in Johto featured in Mewtwo Returns. In the English dub, it is described as Johto's highest mountain.
On the top of the mountain is a deep forest, at the center of which is Clarity Lake, the water of which possesses healing properties.
Purity Canyon, which surrounds Mount Quena, is known for its harsh weather. This weather, combined with Mount Quena's steep cliffs, makes the mountain virtually inaccessible by humans, thus keeping it undisturbed from its natural state. Because of its properties as well as it being a breeding ground, the Bug-type Pokémon view it as sacred, and will attack anyone who threatens its stability; Butterfree lay their eggs on top of Mount Quena.
History
Mewtwo Returns
In Mewtwo Returns, Pokémon researchers Luna Carson and Cullen Calix individually came to the mountain to conduct research on the resident Pokémon in their habitat, and the lake itself, respectively. In the special, Mewtwo and the Pokémon clones were said to have come there after the events of Mewtwo Strikes Back.
Giovanni, along with Domino and the Team Rocket Combat Unit, came here to recapture Mewtwo. However, they were stopped by Mewtwo, after Ash and his friends freed it. Mewtwo then moved the lake to the inside of Mount Quena and wiped the memories of those that would cause the lake harm, including Team Rocket.
Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution
In the post-credits scene of Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, a remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back, Mewtwo and the clones are seen flying toward Mount Quena, foreshadowing the events of the special.

Clarity Lake
Clarity Lake (Japanese: クリア湖 Clear Lake) was originally located in the center of the forest atop Mount Quena, but was moved to inside the mountain by Mewtwo after it defeated Team Rocket. It is the source of Purity River.
Due to the extreme weather and steep mountain face required to overcome in order to access the lake, it is left pure and undisturbed by humans. This purity makes the lakewater especially pure, giving it healing properties. Because of its properties as well as it being a breeding ground, the Bug-type Pokémon view it as sacred, and will attack anyone who threatens its stability. The local Pokémon drink from the water regularly, making them healthy despite the lack of Pokémon Breeders.
An island is located at the center of the lake. After the events of Mewtwo Strikes Back, the clone Pokémon have made this island their home. Despite the lake being said to be undisturbed by humans, the island contains a prison cell inside a cave.
History
After Giovanni and the Team Rocket Combat Unit captured Mewtwo on top of Mount Quena, they began work on a new secret base (a laboratory in the English dub) there. In the process of construction, they began pumping pollution into the pure lake.
When Mewtwo was injured due to Team Rocket's machine, Ash threw it into the lake in order to revive it. Once Mewtwo was restored, it destroyed Team Rocket's aircraft, then moved the lake to inside of the mountain to keep it secret, taking the clone Pokémon, Ash and his friends inside the mountain with it. Mewtwo swore Ash and his friends to secrecy so that the lake would remain undisturbed, but allowed them to keep their memories.
Purity Canyon
Purity Canyon (Japanese: ピュアズロック Pures Rock) is known for its harsh weather, which tourists are specifically warned about in the local guide book. In the original Japanese version, it is said to have tornado-like winds reaching up to 40 km per hour. In the English dub, it advises tourists to avoid the area due to frequent blizzards, thunderstorms, and typhoons.
Due to the extreme weather, crossing the canyon is almost impossible on foot. Instead, a bus passes through once per week (once per month in the English dub) to allow tourists to travel through the area. Opposite the bus stop is a lodge, which the English dub says is for tourists who missed the bus and have to wait for the next one. Luna Carson also lives there while conducting her research on the native Pokémon in their habitat.
Purity River
Purity River (Japanese: ピュア川 Pure River) runs through Purity Canyon, with its water flowing from Clarity Lake atop Mount Quena.
Due to its pure water, left undisturbed by humans for many generations, many Bug-type Pokémon are attracted to the river. Ledian were seen to light up a tree positioned adjacent to the river. It is also a popular place for Kakuna to hang, meaning that a number of Weedle and Beedrill are also present.
