Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Hello, Editor5807!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photos

Nice work with the Binstead and Haylands photos! There's now plenty to show what was before this morning!! The SV website has been updated and it's all gone... Arriva436talk/contribs 08:26, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The bus ticket

Hi! Thanks to your contrib to the crazy bus ticket issue. But did you really mean to say delete? It contradicts! Arriva436talk/contribs 19:03, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I do apologise, I've just seen what the IP has done, changed your vote. Sorry! Arriva436talk/contribs 19:09, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Cowes Chain Ferry sign.JPG

Hi. I'm separating Category:Cowes et East-Cowes into Category:East Cowes and Category:Cowes, by moving the lower amount of East Cowes images into a new cat and then requesting a rename of the old cat to Cowes to get a Bot to do it! Thus I would like to know whether the sign for the Floating Bridge is the one in East Cowes or Cowes. I'm fairly sure it's the former, but could you confirm please? Many thanks, Arriva436talk/contribs 14:35, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, it is the one in East Cowes, and I've just moved it. Editor5807 (talk) 20:29, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Excellent thank you! Arriva436talk/contribs 20:47, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Middle of Nowhere

I see you have now added your photos of the bus stops in Sylvan Drive. They are very good, and thanks for taking and uploading them. I also see pictures of 196, going well with my (albeit not that great) picture of 313 passing Sainsbury's. I see you have noticed I am now uploading images with the registration details after the fleetnumber. This is basically because it adds more information you can see quickly (and on the SV front, it distinguished the preserved and current 301). I also note 196 has been repainted and had the awful new rear bumper fitted.

With all the talk of bus stops, I have let some of my images "jump the queue" (I've got a huge backlog!) to upload them ahead of the others. I don't know whether you were aware of them, but two stops along the Military Road are humorously named "The Back of Beyond" and "The Middle of Nowhere", in reference to their locations. I managed to blag to trip in a car to get shots of them. They can be seen (along with two images I've just moved from Wikipedia), at new category Category:Military Road (Isle of Wight).

Strictly speaking, the bus stops names don't have the "The" in front of them, but it sound better with them :) They were taken down after the network change in April 2006 (see old photo [1]), but new ones were put back up when the Island Coaster started. Do you think the names have any nobility on either the Southen Vectis of Military Road article? Arriva436talk/contribs 22:09, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I was aware of these particular bus stops but have not heard of any other examples of this, so it certainly is unique. In that case I would say it probably does have some notability for either article if you were looking to include it. Editor5807 (talk) 23:19, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

Thanks for sorting some of the cats under the new SV cat scheme, your help is greatly appreicated. You may have noticed, I have made further changes to some pages, mainly to add Geocoding to my images which is something I wish to do for all of my images eventually. I've also made a couple of pedantic edits which serve no real purpose other than to please me :) ! You may have noticed I have stopped sorting images for a bit, this is because I have been uploading some of the old SV images I have, before I upload all my latest ones. The most interesting one I have uploaded is probably File:Gurnard Cow Lane bus stop.JPG. I am going to be very busy during the next couple of weeks so probably won't have time to do any sorting - however when I have done everything and am no longer busy expect lots of edits! Happy New Year, Arriva436talk/contribs 22:08, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Help needed!

Well done for catching the Wilts & Dorset Volvos, that's very good for the record. I have tried to put a destination display on the route 10 photo, still undecided as to how it looks yet, but it looks OK on Southern Vectis route 10. Anyway, I just wanted to ask about the location of these photos (i.e what road they were on), so I can add it to the image page to be more detailed:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was just going to leave the first one, but then the other two were there so I thought it would be better to ask! Incidentally, looking at it now they've pretty much all gone, between us we do have most of the Leyland/Volvo Olympians covered, which is good. I've still got some of them on the Sailbus to upload.

Re the SV fleet, 452 and 455 are withdrawn. The OmniDekkas are due to come over in a couple of weeks, but their new seating covers won't be ready till late January, so the four Wilts & Dorset deckers and one Citaro will stay for a bit. Arriva436talk/contribs 22:40, 7 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help with the route 10 photo, it certainly looks better than it did with nothing and is mucch better for the route 10 article. The roads the buses are on in the other SV photos are as follows:
Anyway I hope that helps. Hope you enjoying your "Wikibreak" as well! And the snow if you have any! I've only just got back to the island from the mainland so haven't been able to take any photos of SV in the snow annoyingly, which is really quite deep in places, don't think the island has seen it on this scale in many years! As I'm sure you will have heard Southern Vectis' services have been serverly disrupted anyway. Editor5807speak 00:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that, in some places it doesn't matter that much, but in others, like Ryde, its nice for the description page to say where is it. To be honest, with all the disruption with the snow and everything, I've been making nearly as many edits as I would have anyway! Yes, SV have been severely disrupted, I am fortunate enough to have SV's commercial & operations manager's account of where each of the 15 buses got stranded! Very interesting... Record for a 9 from Newport to Ryde was 11 hours 20 minutes! Drivers had to stay at others' homes, and at hotels etc. Newport drivers stayed overnight at the Ryde depot canteen and vice versa! No doubt you will have heard that 40 passengers stayed on the floor of the travel office at Newport bus station! The last part of the story is about 310 and 319 behind one another trying to stop at the lights at Long Lane/Staplers, failing, and haven to be driven sideways into the kerb to stop, at the same time three cars slid past and hit each other, and a motorcyclist flew under the front of a (thankfully) slow moving Citaro.
The most impressive photo opportunity is probably the 11 buses that had to stay at Ryde bus station, unable to get to the depot. Seen here. There's some more pictures here. I've had snow too, one operator managed to run throughout Wednesday which was quite impressive. The other one came back Thursday, and the last today (partially, my roads still busless).
The latest SV news is that 452 and 455 have reached Hants & Dorset trim at Eastleigh for repainting. One question, I noticed you are now putting the date of when you took the photo, rather than when you uploaded it, on the file page. Do you want me to change this as I go along? I've also got some other questions at Category talk:Southern Vectis. Enjoy the snow! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:02, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's certainly been a strange week. I have uploaded two photos here and here, and have a few others to upload which show the scale of the snow, and helps to show why unsurprisingly route 6 still isn't running. Initially I started using the upload date as the date i put on the images, i did decide it was better as they date the photo was taken as it's easier to see from this than to go down to the meta-data at the bottom of the page. I do intend to change all my images eventually to show this so if you see any as you are recategorising images this would help :) Thanks, Editor5807speak 18:23, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Nice shots. My bus service is still suspended. OK, I'll try and change the dates, fortunately when I made made my choice I went for the actual date of the photo, this far down the line I think it's the best. (and changing 2,000+ photos wouldn't be good!) Arriva436talk/contribs 23:24, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category sorting

Thanks for sorting a lot of the images at Category:Buses in the United Kingdom. It's much appricated! I wanted to get below 900 images before my Wikibreak, and now it's well below that, at 865, as I've done some more. I was slowly going through Category:Geograph images of buses, but that takes ages! Oh, by the way, Wikibreak = I'm coming over! Fingers crossed 457 is still there... Arriva436talk/contribs 20:13, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Result! I saw 457! I've now got a personal shot of it. I have now left the island, though won't be back to my main PC until a couple of days time. Anyway, I have a list of what I saw on my sandbox. A permanent link is [2]. It's rather long and boring, so in case you don't make it, the most important news is that 1052 has been out and about in Newport. Still hasn't had new seats though, so shouldn't go in service.
Two other things. Probably of note somewhere eventually is that 479 hadn't been in service since September until last weekend. And now we know why 1101's island thinker has been taken off.... http://www.iwcp.co.uk/news/news/a-career-thrown-away-31309.aspx . Apparently, the 1109 mystery of having half of it taken off is explained by having a Dart drive into the side of Alex Dyke. Whoops! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:39, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the information. I had heard the story of 1101's island thinker, and on this subject, I just noticed an unregistered user has started a discussion on the talk page of the route 7 article about having the image changed on in the articles infobox...I didn't really know what to say to that. With 1052 in Newport bus station, I was there at the time, although as it was leaving. The photo isn't brilliant, but I still managed to get it, and will upload it soon. Editor5807speak 21:53, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've replied to that over there now. The Newport staff shuttle seems to turn come and go frequently (it was 601 all week until 1052), so if I'd been there I would have probably seen it too. I look forward to seeing your photo! On the subject of infobox images, as I said on "the list", I suddenly had a great idea for route 5's infobox. Outside Osborne House (after all it is the via point). Fortunately I managed this, and even better it was a MPD (good considering two Citaros and a Scania were the others on the 5 and they'd all bunched with the roadworks at Whippingham). And on the subject of route articles, now we have Category:Southern Vectis route 22, do you think there's any scope for a Wiki article about the 22? The image of 196 would look good in the infobox. Arriva436talk/contribs 21:03, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've just realised that all of the photos are of 196 lol. I was talking about this one File:Southern Vectis 196 HW52 EPV 8.JPG. I should have remembered that - all the photos are of the same journey. I took a photo in Sandown High Street, rushed up Station Avenue, we crossed at the Broadway, then I legged it along the road, through the station, and got to Perowne Way just in time!! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:10, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just one more thing, 1052 apparently appeared in service on the 5 Saturday morning. And a couple of the other OmniDekkas have gone over to the island, still in London red. They're having their MOTs done before refurbishment. Arriva436talk/contribs 21:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

All sounds good to me. There could well be scope for an article on route 22, I've kind of been neglecting Wikipedia recently, only looking out at my watchlist and making the odd edit, but I should have more time to edit it a bit more soon. Although the routing hasn't changed that much, there would probably be a decent amount of content for it, history, new Wightbus route etc for the 22.

I saw 1052 on route 6 today? I got a shot of it in the bus station, then got on it as far as Whitepit Lane to get some interior photos as its not had the new seats in yet. I'll keep a look out for the others as they arrive and hopefully get some more photos. Thanks, Editor5807speak 00:27, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Help with image names

I've now finished uploading my September photos of the SV driver strikes. The next lot of island photos I have are from December (my first visit when I did the 11). I've got to get through some photos in Southampton first (I took loads of the railway tunnel works). However, I have come across a problem with naming some of the images. While I was on the number 11, I took some photos out of the window. I don't really know what to name them though. Something like "Sylvan Drive from number 11 bus.JPG". Or "View of Sylvan Drive from number 11 bus". Or "View from number 11 bus of Sylvan Drive". And then "number" could be either "service" or "route". And should Southern Vectis be put in the title, say "Totland War Memorial from Southern Vectis route 11 bus"?

What sounds best to you?! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Arriva436talk/contribs 18:49, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The drivers strike photos look good. I think they all sound fine, "Sylvan Drive from number 11 bus.JPG" sounds clear and to the point and would go alongside any other images of Sylvan Drive that were uploaded in the future in the same category. However I suppose the advantage of having "view" at the start would group all the images together taken from inside the bus... As with "number", "route" or "service" they would all be fine as well, although if "Southern Vectis" was added to the file name I would say it sounds best with route. Having Southern Vectis would also confirm the operator for anyone who didn't know the island as well.
The "Totland War Memorial from Southern Vectis route 11 bus" format sounds good, clear and in my opinion the best one to use, however as I said, any of those suggested would be fine I think. Thanks, Editor5807speak 23:08, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll do the last style. Thanks for the help! I did actually get photos at both locations, Sylvan Drive and a photo at Totland. I took some at Carisbrooke Castle too. Unfortunately, heading along the Middle road (and then the Military Road as the 11 was on diversion), it poured down, so the windows misted up. As a result, the photos at Totland are quite bad (potential understatment!), so I don't know whether to upload them. I may as well I suppose. I took some from the 7 on Pixley Hill too. I also got some shots of a wet, windy, deserted and very bleak Yarmouth. Contrasts a lot with the bustling summer scenes so I thought they would be interesting.
Unrelated, there's loads of diversions seemingly at the moment affecting SV services, but I've just checked and George Street isn't being closed until the 8th, so not tomorrow when you're in Ryde. The 7 on Hunnyhill is an interesting one!! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:12, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok that sounds good then. I'd say upload them, as its better to have them than nothing. I'll look out for diversions I've just taken a look at the website and there are a lot! I've been meaning to get the 8 at the bottom section of Staplers, its diverted that way until 30 June according to SV so still plenty of time! Editor5807speak 18:44, 5 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have now finished uploading all of my 5/6th December photos. This includes all the route 11 photos that I took before it was withdrawn, including the Carisbrooke Castles ones. The only 11 photo I have left now it from the last day. That will be uploaded soon, as I am moving onto my 19/20 December photos in due course. They are all the 10/14/16 ones. Fortunately, Google Street view launched the island just in time for me to locate some stuff, the only bus stops I don't know the name of are the two in this photo File:Carisbrooke Sylvan Drive Silver Birch Close from Southern Vectis route 11 bus.JPG, and I can't match them up with any of your ground-level photos. Any ideas? Arriva436talk/contribs 22:36, 14 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I took a look on Google Street View and it wouldn't even let me up there... Unfortunately I can't remember what the names of the stops were called either. I will take a walk up to try and see if that helps with road names etc. Strange that I didn't get a photo of it as I took the ground level ones though as I thought I had it all covered. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Ryde Tesco

I'm uploading my pictures from the 19 Dec 2009 (of route 10, 14, 16 etc), and have just "got" to Tesco on the no.2. Can you remember when the new Tesco opened. I cannot find it on the County Press search! Arriva436talk/contribs 17:45, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

SV update

I've been looking at your Haylands shots. Very nice, and it's good to have captured the route before it changed. Do you happen to know what stand the 37 leaves from at Ryde bus station? Anyway, the MPDs were all captured, and the Citaros are all now on Commons. I've just uploaded some of my Sandown Esplanade shots, including 1147 File:Southern Vectis 1147 HW09 BCF and Sandown Esplanade 2.JPG, in rather less good weather than your photos! That leaves just 1145 to be put on Commons, so all the other Scanias are on here in one way or another, though daytime/better shots would be nice for some. I went to Bustival so I've got a lot of the coaches now as well which is good. Also managed the 7 on the M. Road.

As you might have noticed on the SV blog, what the Olympians were planned to do was to peak journeys on the 5 and 9 to help reliability. However, the plans have now apparently changed, and the Olys are due to leave, replaced by some DAF single-deckers from Bluestar - ironically the ones displaced by the arrival at Bluestar of the Southern Vectis Citaros! Arriva436talk/contribs 21:19, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I still have a few more Haylands and Binstead bus stops to upload, as well as one more of a bus on Queens Road and some photos taken while on the bus, so once its all up it should make a nice set. Honestly, I'm not sure what stand it uses, I'll be in Ryde tomorrow, so I'll take a look and try to get a photo as well. On the subject of fleet photos, the other thing I have noticed is somehow B7 193 has escaped both of us, and so far doesn't feature on Commons at all. I'll look forward to seeing your Bustival photos, unfortunately due to being very busy I would have been unable to get up there for any decent amount of time, so had to give it a miss. I'm not sure what the plan is for future Bustival events, but hopefully if it is held in the future I will find time to attend at least one! Editor5807speak 22:40, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
"[The event is for] the wider community as a whole, and that is how we envisage it developing in future years" gives a clue, whether it actually comes back remains to be seen though! I've got a photo of 193 in Shanklin, the day after I was in Sandown, so it should be uploaded soon. That we means we have decent shots for all the B7s. As for 1145, it turns out I photographed it shortly after 1147, so we do have a shot of it - whoops! I took a better photo of it in Shanklin the next day as well. Shanklin went quite well, it was sunny and a covered some good Wightbus stuff, 22, 23 & 24. And the 16 with its amusingly incorrect destination display "Botamic Gardens!
