Both tif and jpg format versions of the same scans are included in this category. When adding categories the jpg version is preferred for Wikimedia projects due to size and more accurate rendering of thumbnail versions. To create cropped versions or other derived images, the tifs are normally significantly higher resolution as a starting point. Any derived versions should be created as new jpgs linking back to the original. The Library of Congress writes: "Available online are 39,744 glass negatives and a selection of about 1,600 photographic prints for which copy negatives exist. ... The Library purchased the collection in 1948 from D.J. Culver." The majority of the images in Commons from this collection were uploaded in a batch upload project, see User:Fæ/LOC

Dates

edit

The collection is in chronological order and some of the glass negatives have dates on them. Occasionally a negative was misfiled, especially when it was reused at a later date, and may appear out of order. Some of the photos are copies made of older stock photos of famous people, but the majority are images of contemporary events that can be dated from newspaper articles. The photographers had a penchant for opera singers, and in some cases may take a dozen photos of the singer. At least one photographer made a large series of opera stars at the stage entrance to the Metropolitan Opera House. Another photographer would go to arriving and departing ships and find out what celebrity was aboard. If there was no celebrity he would take a photo of any local pretty woman aboard. The Bain negatives have a number on each photo which appears to be a sequential number for each batch developed in the darkroom. The batch number is followed by a dash and a second sequential number which represents the order in which they were developed in that batch. Some photos were taken at the Bain studio and the shelves of archived photos are visible in the background. (Source: Richard Arthur Norton in 2020)
