Commons:CommonsProject Architecture
Project
editScope
editThe scope of this project is to coordinate the following works:
- develop standard for naming of architecture-related pictures, drawings etc.
- organise and sort the Category:Architecture and its subcategories
- keep the top-categories Category:Structures, Category:Buildings, Category:Architects, Category:Architecture and for example Category:Architecture of Germany free of files
- ensuring that all adequate licensing considerations are met
Language
editEN: As English is the common language for the categories in the commons this project was initiated in English. Anyway, people from all international Projects are invited to "join the team" and enrich the project with their language.
Members
editIdeally, those involved in this project will be a diverse group from all major languages, as well as different wikiprojects. If you join please put this project page on your watchlist to stay informed!

Naming of Files
editThe name of your uploaded file should be as significant and destinct as possible. Please note that file names can't be changed after upload! Simply queue one word after another, don't use a "-" or simlar in between. To keep it simple type everything in small letters.

Classification help
editClassification Templates
editThese Texts are templates and can be used at the beginning of a category page to help users to classify a picture right. They can be set in like this: {{NAME}}
How to classify a photo of a building
editPhotos of buildings should be put in the Specific Building Category.
- If there is already a category for this specific building, place your files there, but do not overcategorize the files!
- If there is no appropriate category pertaining to the building in question and you have more than two pictures, create a new category named after the building (for example Category:Eiffel Tower or Category:Kresge Auditorium). The name of the category should be consistent with Commons:Categories#Category names. Then categorize the new category (not each single picture in the category!) as follows:
- mandatory: Buildings by location and by function
- optional: Buildings by architect | by association | by date of construction | by material | by shape | by style
(This is the Template:category-building-photo)
How to classify a painting of a building
editPaintings of buildings should be categorized like this:
- Category:Shown building, for example Category:Semperoper
- Type of building, for example Category:Palace paintings
- Style of painting, for exampleCategory:Renaissance paintings of buildings
(This is the Template:category-building-painting)
How to classify a drawing of a building
editArchitectural drawings of buildings should be classified like this:
- Shown building, for example Category:Semperoper.
- Location, for example Category:Drawings of buildings in Hamburg
- Type of Drawing: see Category:Architectural drawings by type, for example: Category:Floor plans
- Type of building. see Category:Drawings of buildings, for example: Category:Drawings of churches
- Once classified, files should be removed from main categories, such as Category:Architectural drawings.
- See also: Category:Paintings of buildings and Category:Buildings for related images
(This is the Template:category-building-drawing)
How to classify a picture or drawing of a bridge
editContent depicting Bridges can be classified like this:
Bridge Category. First check if there is already a Category for this specific bridge.
- If yes: put it in there, that's it. Don't put it anywhere else!
- If no: If you have more than two pictures: create a new Category, named after the bridge. For example Category:Rheinbrücke Emmerich. Use the common name, not the english one. Then you categorize the category (NOT each single picture!) as follows:
Possible Categories:
- Location: see Category:Bridges by country, for example: Category:Bridges in Germany
- River: see Category:Bridges by river for example: Category:Bridges over the Ruhr
- Function: see Category:Bridges by function, for example: Category:Footbridges
- Type / construction: see Category:Bridges by type, for example: Category:Arch bridges
- Material: see Category:Bridges by material for example Category:Concrete bridges
- Engineer: see Category:Bridge engineers for example: Category:John A. Roebling
- Architect: see Category:Architects for example: Category:Norman Foster
- Drawings: see Category:Drawings of bridges
How to classify a picture of an architect
editPictures regarding architects should be classified in categories like this:
Architect Category. First check if there is already a Category for this Architect.
- If yes: put the pictures in there, that's it. Additionally you can specify the kind of picture, for example: Category:Portraits of men.
- If no: If you have more than two pictures: create a new Category, named after the architect. For example Category:Jean Nouvel. Then you categorize the Cat (not the single pictures!) as follows:
- Country: see Category:Architects by country, for example: Category:Architects from Germany
- Style: see Category:Architects by style, for example: Category:Renaissance architects.
Please don't put files additionally into Category:Architects if they are in these sub-categories!
