Deadline

edit

~didigitallibrarian Hello, on the Main contest page the deadline is said to be "Deadline for submissions: February 28, 2021 23:59 (UTC)" however when I uploaded the pictures right now, I see a banner saying that "Wiki Loves Folklore 2021 is finished. You may still share your images, but they will not be part of the contest." Can you please confirm if my images will be part of the contest as they were submitted before the deadline specified in the main page? Ioannes2909 (talk) 11:19, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I guess the message is clear "but they will not be part of the contest".--Liridon (talk) 13:47, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not if the information on the main page indicates otherwise. That's why I politely asked if someone can please confirm (so nobody has to guess). If someone could take ownership of either error on the main page or setting the banner too early so I know which information is correct that would be appreciated. Ioannes2909 (talk) 16:46, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Probably will be included, as I see the campaing date has been updatated until 1 March 2021. Snce this talk page is more general I also recommend you to write on the talk page of current contest Commons talk:Wiki Loves Folklore 2021.--Liridon (talk) 17:31, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Folklore

edit

On the Wiki Loves Folklore project, please I need to know if the photos to be submitted would need our copyright/watermark/signature on them.

Thanks ~didigitallibrarian SIEBHONU (talk) 05:28, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Thanks for your enquiry, yes Photos should be free from copyright, watermark and signature. If they do have Copyright and signature you need to send the OTRS procedure to them to transfer ownership. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS Best Joy Agyepong (talk) 18:40, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

No, files don’t need to be free from copyright, watermark and signature. Files must be in the public domain or available under a free license (the latter means the copyright holder still retains the copyright and allows usage only in accordance with a license, which must be quite permissive, but the copyright owner may reserve certain rights). Using watermark and signature is strongly discouraged, but (as far as I know) their presence doesn’t disqualify you from the contest. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:37, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much

The banner is breaking all the RTL Wikipedias

edit

I woke up and googled something in Hebrew, and instead of reading the article, I got white screen. The reason for it is the wrong css included in the banner: text-indent: -1000em; It affects all RTL languages, all pages, all mobile devices. Makes me wonder if anyone even cares that the banner is not breaking the sites. Uziel302 (talk) 07:46, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Homepage reorganization

edit

Hi everyone, I have been looking at the homepage and I feel it will be more aesthetic for readers alike if the section

== Winning pictures in former editions== have their content arranged in descending order. like 2022 images coming first, then to the 2021, to 2020 and finally to the 2019 winning images.

Public institution collaboration best practices

edit

Hi:

A regional government institution dedicated to heritage has asked me about how they could involve in the contest. They know they can promote it through their networks but are interested in going deeper. My question is, are there any documented best practices on how can an institute can involve in the contest? Thanks. —Ismael Olea (talk) 15:59, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Olea please send us an email on support wikilovesfolklore.org. Thank you. ✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 12:29, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Are photos of St Patricks Day SF compatible with "Folklore"?

edit

Hello! I have some digitized photos of St. Patricks Day in San Francisco in the year 1970, which i would like to load up to WLF 2024. I am not sure wether they thematically are compatible with folklore. If you do think they do, please tell me how and where to load them up, as USA does not have a page on WLF. At the category "Saint Patrick's Day in San Francisco" you find two black and white photos which i loaded up some time ago. Best regards, Hartmut Schmidt Foeniz (talk) 20:44, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm just part of the national organisation team in Germany.
But I in my opinion we would regard these images as part of WLF because it's a festival
Viele Grüße Foeniz (talk) 11:03, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

"Folklore" seems to be kind of a narrow definition

edit

Greetings, all. From what I can make out, "folklore" seems to be limited to photo sets in which the following appear to apply exclusively (from my observations):

- The subjects are all "ethnic" - I don't recall seeing any images from the United States or, for that matter, North America.

- Many of the subjects are dressed in highly colorful and exotic clothing which could be considered "festival", "traditional" or "ethnic"

This saddens me a bit because it seems as if a lot of American traditions, festivals and celebrations would be left out. For example, I would love to submit images of annual traditions such as the following:

- Pride festivals (Houston and Dallas). These are annual celebrations that bring out their own clothing, costumes, and traditions. While such celebrations don't go back, say, 400 years, they are part of America's folklore now.

- Music festivals, such as Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Music lovers of many stripes take to Zilker Park, a central park near the city's downtown area, to stroll in the late summer sun and hear musical acts ranging from the commercially successful to the upcoming and/or obscure.

Folklore should be about ALL folklore, not just what fits a stereotype of exoticism or time period. United States events may not resemble the winners in past years, but surely someone must be able to see folk traditions in a country 250 years old?

Please consider broadening your definition of "folk". The US may do a lot of dumb things in the eyes of the world, but we have a lot of good people who are just as human as the ones featured in your winners' images. Wikigameshow (talk) 22:17, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
