MediaWiki talk:Cascadeprotected

Looking at the en version, here's what I think would be appropriate links for this message:

• Commons:Protection policy.
• The deletion log for the page/file in question.
• Commons:Deletion guidelines.
• Commons:Undeletion requests and/or COM:AN/P - to request restoration.

That's probably all we need, and as we only have ONE deletion process (well two if you count speedy), ours doesn't need most of the ParserFunction stuff on en.--Nilfanion 19:54, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion guidelines#Speedy deletion is a mere subpage of the deletion guidelines (and contains the formal criteria). I can't think offhand of any pages/files that have been salted after a deletion request, the sort of things that get salted here are obvious speedies; so a link to a deletion request is probably pointless. Have you tried logging out? MediaWiki:Cascadeprotected isn't displayed for users logged into sysop accounts. —David Levy 04:21, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I tried it as an IP, but not as a non sysop sock. What would really help is the sequence of steps to do to one or more files to see the message displayed. I could try it on en: see it, then try it here... thanks! PS your help has been invaluable! ++Lar: t/c 13:26, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Any attempt by a non-sysop to create one of the pages listed here should trigger the message's display. Typing a page's location in the address bar (e.g. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Wiki.png) and attempting to edit the page, performing a "Go" search for one of the non-image titles and following the "create this page" link, or simply following one of the non-image links at Commons:Protected against recreation (or any direct link) should accomplish this.

Incidentally, if a non-sysop attempts to upload an image protected against creation, the standard protection message should appear.

Tested it with my new sock, Larbot (talk · contributions · Move log · Statistics · logs · block log). Following the link (pasted in) to Image:Wiki.png did not work, you get the standard "this image does not exist, you can upload it" and following that link gets the upload page.... But following links to non image pages did work, the MediaWiki:Cascadeprotected page is displayed as part of the page returned. Are you sure about image behaviour or did I maybe do it wrong? As noted above, if a non-sysop attempts to upload an image protected against creation (meaning that he/she selects a local image, specifies the protected image title as the destination filename, and clicks "Upload file"), the standard protection message (the one displayed when someone tries to upload an image under the title of a protected image that actually exists) should appear.

If he/she attempts to edit the nonexistent image's description page (by following the aforementioned link and clicking the "edit" tab), the message should be displayed. —David Levy 21:22, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Well does it work for you? You're a non Sysop at this time, right? (but that's fixable!!!)... When I pasted http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Wiki.png into the address bar as a non sysop, I got the upload page. I did not actually try to upload anything, that particular image has been a bit of a source of confusion :) ++Lar: t/c 21:39, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Indeed, I'm not a sysop here. (And yes, that can be frustrating at times.) Please add a test image title to Commons:Protected against recreation (e.g. File:Protection test.png), and I'll attempt to upload an image under that filename. Test results

(outdent) OK I have added Image:Protection test.png to that page. Then I went into IE and signed in as larbot and tried to upload the image. I got the upload screen, gave it a file to try to upload and instead of the desired page I got a page (url was http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload) that just says:

Upload file
Upload warning
Protected page 

(in large, medium and small/red font respectively)

I then created the image as an admin, overriding the protection, and then deleted it again. Same result when I tried uploading it as a non admin. So either that's not the right sequence of things, or the page isn't done right because I messed it up. Can I try this on en? do you know an image there that this is true for off hand? Thanks! This was the expected behavior. MediaWiki:Cascadeprotected applies only to attempted edits (not to attempted uploads). As noted above, the standard protection message (the one displayed when someone tries to upload an image under the title of a protected image that actually exists) appears instead. For example, if you attempt (under your Larbot account) to upload an image under the filename Symbol support vote.svg (a protected image), you'll receive the same message.

I suggest that you replace MediaWiki:Protectedpage with a message along the lines of the following:

The attempted action is restricted at this time. You may contact a Commons administrator to request its completion.

ah. NOW I get it. I tried this link (from larbot): http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Protection_test.png&action=edit ... that is, trying to EDIT the page of a nonexistent, protected, image, and I get the expected MediaWiki:Cascadeprotected page embedded in the warning page (view source) returned. Now I get it. This is working correctly. Yaay. But now on to changing MediaWiki:Protectedpage.. :) ++Lar: t/c 19:55, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm hesitant of anything that makes us even more en.wp. We don't need to do everything they do. I prefer the current style, but it's not really a big deal. Change it if you want. Rocket000 (talk) 20:50, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
