Hiding Judy Gallagher categories
Hi Jarekt, I see that you have created a few categories like Category:Insect photographs by Judy Gallagher and its 4 subcategories. Although these are marked with HIDDENCAT, they are still visible in the pages of their parents categories such as Category:Insects, Category:Lepidoptera, etc. Could you please avoid this? Shouldn't the Judy Gallagher categories be user categories? Best regards --LamBoet (talk) 11:10, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- We can put them into Category:Lepidoptera by source or Category:Lepidoptera by photographer categories and such. --Jarekt (talk) 12:40, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, these categories don't exist. Am I missing anything?--LamBoet (talk) 13:27, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- No they would have to be created, and than we can add many other such categories. --Jarekt (talk) 13:33, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- I have seen what you just did (creating Category:Lepidoptera by source), but then you would have to create a full parallel category structure with "blabla by source" (for instance, in the case of Judy Gallagher photos, you would need to do the same thing for Insects, Coleoptera, Odonata, Hymenoptera and Spiders). Isn't there a simpler way? How about just keeping the user categories separate from the main categories, just like Category:Insecta by Jkadavoor (Jee) and its contents? --LamBoet (talk) 13:07, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
- I was planning to create additional "by source" categories, without going too deep down the taxonomy level (stopping at order or family). Not creating "by source" categories would be and "easier way" but that is true with any category. For years we had categories like Category:Image sources for insects and Category:Images of animals by source but they are rather disorganized. --Jarekt (talk) 13:34, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now use datasets on Commons. You can see an example that is using this source. [1]
- There is a new opt-in beta feature of a wikitext mode for the visual editor. You can try it out.
- When you update a page with translations on wikis with the Translate extension the existing translations will be marked as outdated instead of removed. [2]
- The new version of MediaWiki was released to all wikis last week (calendar).
- MoodBar has been removed from the Wikimedia wikis. [3]
- The
live
option for the Tipsy notice tool has been removed. Gadgets and user scripts which use it need to be updated. [4]
Problems
- Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter
about:config
in the address bar and setnetwork.cookie.maxPerHost
to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox. [5]
Changes this week
- There is no new version of MediaWiki this week because of the Wikimedia Developer Summit.

Recent changes
- You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [6]
Problems
- video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [7]
Changes this week
- There is a new magic word called
{{PAGELANGUAGE}}
. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [8] - When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [9]
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas. Before you could use<ce>
.<ce>
should be replaced by<chem>
. [10] - You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [11]
- The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS:
#wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; }
You can change the number50
to make it look like you want to. [12] - Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [13]
- When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [14]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on January 17 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

File:Commons-Wikidata links - 2015.svg
Hello Jarek,
I just discovered File:Commons-Wikidata links - 2015.svg which is very very clear and will be useful.
Sadly a small arrow is missing: P935 from Q9062435 to Wikicommons 'Pablo Picasso'.
Is there a small chance that you could add this arrow for me ?
I need your file because I try to explain this concept at different places, but your schema is much much clearer.
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 09:33, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, it is my understanding that Category items would not have any properties other than category's main topic (P301) (and instance of (P31)) and all the properties would be held at article item, so d:Q9062435 should not have Commons gallery (P935), and even Commons category (P373) might be removed in the future. The idea is not to store the same information in several places, so when it is corrected in one places, it is correct everywhere. --Jarekt (talk) 13:03, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Good to know.
- As you seem to be familiar with all this, I have another question:
- In biology, wikicommons has species categories and species galleries. But wikipedias have no species categories. So currently there is only one wikidata item per species. Conclusion: most wikicommons species category have no wikidata item!
- Someone told me that we needed to create category item for all species.
- Is that true ? I seems a lot of work.
- I was waiting/hoping for another technical solution.
- Best regards Liné1 (talk) 14:24, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, Item has 2 main purposes - to store interwiki links (aka sitelinks) and properties. Category items only serve the first one and redirect to article item for the second. Most sitelinks to commons can not be trusted as they sometimes include links to commons categories and sometimes to galleries, see here. You should be relying on Commons category (P373) properties instead. Your conclusion that most wikicommons species category have no wikidata item is partially correct, there is no item accessible through sitelinks, but there are items on wikidata for articles about all those species, they should be linked to using q-code. What do you think about this idea: lets create a new template {{Wikidata taxons|Q....}} that will take only a single parameter a wikidata q-code. The template could evolve in the future but for now it would have: {{On Wikidata}}, {{Interwiki from wikidata}}, {{VN}} and in the future we could maybe add a version of {{Authority control}} with links to taxa databases and maybe optional {{Taxonavigation}} if it is rewritten to take q-codes. I could add {{Wikidata taxons}} to all taxon categories on Commons. I have done something similar to place and some people categories on Commons. See File:Using Wikidata on Commons - October 2016.pdf for some background. --Jarekt (talk) 15:19, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry my friend, I did not fully understand your answer. Should we create 'wikidata category item' for all species ? Even if it means 100.000 items that most of the time will have no interwiki (there are no species categories in wikipedias) ?
- About Qcode parameter, passing it to all templates seems a tedious work. We have so many species categories. We need to be sure that it is THE solution before trying that solution. Also if the item is merged with another, the wikidata Qcode does not follow. Liné1 (talk) 06:42, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, I am sorry I was not very clear. In my opinion, there is no need for creating category items on Wikidata, unless there are categories for that species on other projects. The properties and interwiki links can be easily accessed by using q-codes to article items. I will create some example to show how. --Jarekt (talk) 12:38, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

- Ok, understoud. But as I said, Qcode param looks like a workarround. It does not seem robust enough. Best regards Liné1 (talk) 13:36, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, I agree it is a workaround, but it allows us to use Wikidata now. I hope that if phabricator:T99899 is fixed than commons categories will be able to do reverse look up based on Commons category (P373). --Jarekt (talk) 13:44, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Photo Challenge – Third Place | |
Congratulations!
Your picture Halloween costiumes - 1.jpg won the 3rd place in the Photo Challenge Holidays/Vacations, in December 2016. You can find the results of the challenge here. |
I didn't realise the voting was scheduled to end today, rather than the end of the month. I closed it and announced the winners! My close has been reverted by User:Abderitestatos who spotted the date, but I think it should just be closed again. It isn't like there are hundreds of people still wanting to vote on it. And it isn't linked by the challenge page now. I don't see the point in extending the voting (or submission) to arbitrary days just because they start a little late. Better to keep to whole months. There's enough time for those who wish to vote. -- Colin (talk) 07:37, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Yes it is kind of my fault. I set the submission date 3 days latter than usual to allow potential new-years pictures, but did not notice that submission date would cause programs to schedule voting to close 3 days latter as well. I was equally surprised by User:Abderitestatos revert and that the page I created had on Feb-3 as the end date. I will watch for this in the future. As for Commons:Photo challenge/2016 - December - Holidays/Voting I agree that it was already closed (prematurely), tailed and announced, I would leave it at that. --Jarekt (talk) 12:50, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Your winning photo also has a spelling mistake. -- Colin (talk) 14:55, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- I renamed it earlier today. --Jarekt (talk) 16:02, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Creating the species categories automatically was perhaps not a good idea.
Now we have a bunch of species categories:
- not attached to any genera
- without any reference
Regards Liné1 (talk) 09:19, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- As expected, it introduced species categories for synonyms.
- We will never see the end of it.
- Liné1 (talk) 16:36, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, Sorry, if I am messing things up, I will make sure to clean up before I move on to other tasks. I thought I was avoiding synonyms by verifying the name exist in Wikidata. Each category name I created I checked against Wikidata and if it was not there I was verifying that it exist by searching w:BugGuide and other databases. I corrected large number of typos or synonyms (see here and other edits at that time) before creating new categories. --Jarekt (talk) 17:09, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, I saw that thanks to your work, the names seems valid.
- But Wikidata has multiple entries for each species: one per synonym.
- Cheers Liné1 (talk) 09:02, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, there is unfortunately not much I can do about synonyms if they are not tagged on wikidata, but I will check if any of the categories I created are tagged as synonyms. In the mean time I am done with category creation, so if you have a bot that can look through Category:Biology pages without Taxonavigation and see if there are any categories where Taxonavigation templates can be added automatically, that would be great. --Jarekt (talk) 20:23, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

- I will run the bot.
- But it copies the taxonavigation from genus category to species category and gallery only if: genus has a {{Species}} describing the species
- Cheers Liné1 (talk) 09:23, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1 Ok so maybe what I will concentrate on is grouping my new categories, without taxonavigation, by rank and adding taxonavigation to genus and up. I will also look into {{Species}} template. --Jarekt (talk) 14:25, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Suggestions for improvements for Wiki Loves Monuments
Hi Jarek,
It’s been a while − hope you are well :)
The Wiki Loves Monuments international team (of which I am part of) is working on preparing the next edition. After many years of organising the contest, we believe there are still a lot of ways to make the project run even smoother, for everyone − organizers, participants, and of course the Wikimedia Commons community.
I am looking for the feedback of Wikimedia Commons users − not necessarily involved in the organisation/participation of the contest − on how WLM can better interact with Commons. My general message on the VP did not get much recall, so I’m reaching out to you as I trust your opinion :)
Have you noticed things that WLM does not do well and that we should improve on? How could we make the life of Commons regulars easier? etc. etc.
Feel free to answer me directly or to write on Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016/Feedback.
Thanks! Jean-Fred (talk) 10:30, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- Jean-Fred Wiki Loves Monuments is one of the few areas of Commons I hardly had any interactions with. I encountered hardly any issues with WLM, like I did with Wiki Loves Earth. So as an effect I do not have any feedback. Thanks for checking. --Jarekt (talk) 22:24, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- No problem − thanks for the answer Jarek :) Jean-Fred (talk) 08:56, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Pytanie o licencję GNU Free Documentation License
Zaintrygowało mnie to. News from OSM
Hi, I am quitting the discussion because I am clearly not helping there but I keep studying the problem. That means I ignored your ping, but no problem, it's not you, it's me.
As I said I have started to aske around in the mappers community. Good news from d:User talk:L0ll0 (in Italian) Basically it shouldn't be impossible to make a list of items from OSM layers (schools, parks...) and superimpose them with P18 on wikidata. I wanted to superimpose with all common images with coordinates but I am not sure if this is easy. Now, using wikidata of course has some problems because not all P18 are "perfect" and because OSM is not everywhere as precise as in Europe, but it gives you a decent map of some missing pictures.
So if you want to make a challenge about "X" even if it is not "Undocumented" we have another way to show X on a map (very good) even more detailed than wikidata. If we accept that "undocumented" is "not on wikidata" which is a simple approximation, we can also suggest users to go in that direction.
In any case we can use a "soft" approach. We give as theme "X" (school, town halls...) but we also suggest if possible to focus on points on the OSM layers without wikidata P18 tag. In the end consider "multilimgualism" this month: I simply politely ask for rare language or for more than bilingual sign, I did not impose it. And in the end, we are gathering almost all pictures with more than 2 languages or rare languages.
I don't care if some duplicates occur. I mainly want that people get in touch with possibilities. They can be queries, OSM, wikishootme... I am sure that if we give tools and a polite yet not rigid request they will enjoy discovering them, and they will try to fulfill the requests in any case. And noone is "stressed". And after some challenges this way, the expertise will be so high that we can afford to be more precise.
You tell me. It is a jungle of options that are still struggling to coordinate. Nothing is perfect, but their combination is already quite good. --Alexmar983 (talk) 11:34, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- I think I agree with other discussion participants that we should make it as simple as possible and Wikishootme seems to be very simple. I finally understand your approach with OSM and yes that could work except that many Commons images do not have geo coordinates. --Jarekt (talk) 19:42, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Category:S._Pietro_Ispano,_Boville_Ernica,_Rome has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Hello. I contacted the uploader Gryllida about File:Jill Saward 080627b.jpg. (S)He wanted a "grace week". To grant a "grace week", can you remove the "permission missing" tag, or can you convert the speedy deletion request into the deletion nomination? --George Ho (talk) 22:31, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
- George Ho thank you for contacting the uploader. I added some a week to "permission missing" tag and if an image is deleted if you ping me I will undelete it once permission is received. --Jarekt (talk) 03:02, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [34]
Changes this week
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [35] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).

Future changes
- You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [36]
- The name "Wikipedia" will be more obvious at the top of the page when you read Wikipedia in the mobile view. This is because many readers don't realize they are on Wikipedia. [37][38]

wikidata_cat
Hi Jarekt, you added the wikidata_cat field to {{Artwork}}. This makes files like File:Study for "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" MET DT3136.jpg not show up in Category:Artworks with Wikidata item. I think it's better to wrap it in an #if to test if it's actually set to something. this edit seems to do the trick. Multichill (talk) 17:01, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Multichill, I do not remember why we needed wikidata_cat field, but quite often templates that add category has some way to suppress it in a rare case when it is not desirable. For some reason the way it was implemented on Commons is by {{{category|[[Category...]]}}} syntax (not my invention). In majority of the cases you leave category empty to prevent autocategorization. Wikidata_cat field was meant to be used extremely rarely and I have no idea why uploaders of File:Study for "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" MET DT3136.jpg decided to suppress categories. Your tweak goes against current way of using the field . As it is mentioned in the documentation "wikidata_cat=" can be used to suppress addition of Wikidata-related categories. Maybe we need a new field like no_wikidata_cat that someone would have to set to something to suppress the categories. Than we could retire wikidata_cat and in the process check all the current uses. I am fine with removing the field completely, and than adding no_wikidata_cat for a few situation that might need it. --Jarekt (talk) 17:13, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- It gets automatically added by the GWtoolset because it's an optional field in template data. Any idea how to prevent that? Multichill (talk) 17:19, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- I still never learned how to use or configure GWtoolset so no idea at that end. However we can run a bot to mass remove it from files in Category:GWToolset Batch Upload. Bunch of other fields should not be there either like: demo, strict or other_fields. But we can not prevent it from happening in the future unless we implement "no_wikidata_cat". --Jarekt (talk) 17:31, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- I played around on beta to figure it out again. I tried to remove the demo field, but that didn't have any effect. Easiest is probably to have a bot remove the incorrect fields. Only the inclusion of "wikidata_cat" is breaking things, the rest is cosmetic. Probably best to only do edits on files that have "wikidata_cat" and remove the other fields in the same edit. Would you be willing to do this or shall I fire up a bot?
- As for fixing GWtoolset. I'll file a bug, but I don't think anyone is going to work on it soon, see phab:T159478. Multichill (talk) 20:29, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Multichill, I am working on it now. I am using substitution, similar to Template:Artwork/subst. --Jarekt (talk) 19:31, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Bot edits
Hi, if you do such edits, please make sure you fill the source field. You are flooding Category:Images without source. Jcb (talk) 23:38, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
- Jcb, I do not know the source of those files and I am not removing the any sources. All I am doing is removing " wikidata_cat=" field from the upload which field was added for some reason to the files and is preventing the template to add wikidata related categories. I also resort fields in customary order. However if the files are missing source than you need to alert the uploader that forgot to add it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:30, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
- My edits must be working like "touch" command and triggers addition of categories which were added to templates after the upload. --Jarekt (talk) 03:32, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
- I see. It's weird that the files were not added to the 'missing source' cat on upload. I have fixed the mayority in the meantime. Jcb (talk) 12:32, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

<references />
tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use<references />
tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists. [45][46] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 March. File:Lassy Mbouity with Dr Rand Paul in 2015.jpg
Hi, you just restored this image File:Lassy Mbouity with Dr Rand Paul in 2015.jpg by saying that the permission was received and deleted it again. I don't understand. Can you explain me more please?--The realreport (talk) 13:13, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- The realreport, Only after undeletion I noticed that the photos were marked "© Photo Scott M Wemhoff" but the permission come from "Emmanuel B." claiming that he has "legal authority in my capacity to release the copyright of that work". So I asked "Emmanuel B." to clarify how he come to represent Scott M Wemhoff. That will need to be clarified before this ticket can be approved. --Jarekt (talk) 13:27, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
File:Lassy Mbouity with Dr Rand Paul in 2015.jpg
Yes, In fact, Scott Wemhoff sent you an email too. This is Scott [Ticket#2017012010010668]. I'm Emmanuel B and this is my [Ticket#2016121310031176]. I did send an email before but some administrators told me that Scott had to send you an email instead, something that he did two month ago as I mentioned at the beginning by linking two tickets #. Scott and I have the copyright of these images that you deleted in Lassy Mbouity category because we shoot photos together, specially these photos concerning the writer Lassy Mbouity. This is why we both sent you emails in order to give you the permission to use these images. Can you restore these images please? We hold the copyrights and giving you the authorization to use these images about Lassy Mbouity.--The realreport (talk) 16:57, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
- The realreport , Thanks, It is quite confusing since the full conversation is in 3 tickets each handled by someone else without knowledge about the other ones. I restored files in Category:Lassy Mbouity. --Jarekt (talk) 20:11, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Uploads made by User talk:Délie Duparc
Hi Jarekt,
I see that you validated the OTRS ticket for File:Portrait de Marguerite Soubeyran.jpg, and I am very grateful for that. I would like to ask you to have a look to the other uploads made by Délie Duparc (see here for file list). All those uploads have been made on January 5, a little bit more than 2 months ago. Thank you in advance !
Kind regards, Polypone (talk) 07:40, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Polypone I am kind of new to OTRS and at the second look I made mistake with this ticket. The ticket claims that Délie Duparc is "sole owner of the exclusive copyrights" of this painting, which I did not noticed was by someone else ( Evelyn Marc). Sadly I will have to delete it and check with Délie Duparc on how she become "sole owner of the exclusive copyrights" of Evelyn Marc works. --Jarekt (talk) 13:20, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Jarekt,
Thank you for your answer. I understand that it is not easy to check all those copyrights, and I am sure it is a lot of work. I encourage you to send Délie Duparc an email to get details about the copyright ; I am related to her, and I helped her uploading the files, as she is not used to Wikimedia, but she used her own mailbox to send the tickets, and she reads her emails every day. For your information, the situation is as follows :
- Hi Jarekt,
- Evelyn Marc, Willy Eisenschitz and Claire Bertrand all died before the end of XXth century ;
- Délie Duparc was the only child of Evelyn Mark, that is why she owns copyright on all her works ;
- The only other alive copyright owner for Claire Bertrand and Willy Eisenschitz's pictures is Bernard Eisenschitz, who gave Délie Duparc a written approval to upload those files.
I don't really know how you can check this information, but I am sure that Délie Duparc owns all needed documentation for that. Do not hesitate to send her an email.
Kind regards, Polypone (talk) 15:39, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Polypone thank you for clarifying. I did not realized that "Délie Duparc was the only child of Evelyn Mark", that would make her the copyright holder. I will write again with more precise instructions. What is her relation ship to Willy Eisenschitz and Claire Bertrand? --Jarekt (talk) 16:02, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- I just figured it out: Délie Duparc is their granddaughter. --Jarekt (talk) 16:05, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should have clearly specified the relationship between Délie Duparc and Willy Eisenschitz and Claire Bertrand. Anyway, you got it :) Polypone (talk) 16:27, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Polypone, I just found that Délie Duparc who sometimes signs her name as "Estelle Delvolvé" (see http://www.film-documentaire.fr/4DACTION/w_fiche_film/48948_1) sent permission for other works of her mother and grandparents in ticket:2017010510011187 handled by @Krd: . Unfortunately, she did not replied when asked what was her relationship to those painters. Krd, I think fr:Evelyn Marc clarifies the relationship. --Jarekt (talk) 16:39, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- I was not aware that Krd asked for more details about her relationship with the three painters. It is a pity she did not answer you. I expect she will be more reactive to your other messages... I will make sure she answers. Kindly, Polypone (talk) 16:53, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Dear Jarekt,
I have seen that you restored all the files. Thank you very much ! Polypone (talk) 15:35, 16 March 2017 (UTC)- Polypone, Yes I forgot to mention it here. I restored the files and placed them in all the articles they were removed from. We should also create {{Creator}} templates for 3 painters and add them to the files. Also it would be nice to use {{Artwork}} in those files. Is that something you can do? --Jarekt (talk) 17:17, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

- Dear Jarekt,
PD-Polish raz jeszcze
To by mi rozszerzyło możliwość wgrywania zdjęć pod tą licencją. Boston9 (talk) 21:00, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
--Jarekt (talk) 11:57, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. Please could you kindly give a second opinion on the above deletion request? I am currently attempting to track down the name of the author of the painting concerned, but there is also a problem with the reason for the deletion request, and the implication therefrom that hundreds of thousands of Commons images which are PD in their own country of origin and residence, have suddenly become non-PD on Commons (?) Thanks for your help. Storye book (talk) 10:46, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Inappropriate revert
Sorry, Jarekt, but please take a very close look on your revert: I had only made changes on text, that I’ve written myself before. There was no other text affected. — Speravir – 17:58, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- Speravir, I agree that is inappropriate revert. I am not sure what happen since I did not read anything on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard today. I had issues with very slow responses earlier today and that had a large delay between my actions and responses which resulted in several clicks where I clicked on something but nothing happen, but than more of the page loaded and the text shifted so when the click was finally processes there was no link there or a different link. That might have happen when I was looking at my watchlist. I closed some applications and restarted my browser and it become normal again. It does not seem likely, but only other explanation is that someone hacked into my account. Either way I apologize. I fixed it now. --Jarekt (talk) 18:17, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

- I reply to the OTRS email, but I wanted to make sure that the person sending the permission was the author or copyright holder of the the photo of the poster and of the poster itself including the photograph in the poster. It seems to me like this is a photograph of some one else's photograph, so Commons:Derivative works policy needs to be applied. --Jarekt (talk) 14:30, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
- The photo is my work but the poster is not, and I chose the wrong option in the email generator. So, what should I do now, should I regenerate a message?

Help converting paintings to Artwork template
Hi Jarek, I'm working on converting {{Information}} to {{Artwork}} for images of paintings. Because that makes it possible to link these files to the right item on Wikidata. I wrote down my reasoning at my kladblok (notepad permalink). Do you want to help? I already finished Category:Paintings in the Netherlands by museum, but plenty of other categories with a lot of painitngs. My approach is to take a subset in Petscan, maybe apply some negative categories and manually convert some files using {{Art Photo/subst}} (when it's not just a photo of a painting). The remaining files I convert using {{Artwork/subst}}. Seems to work quite well. A lot of the files pop up at User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Category match (see for example all the Van Gogh works). After a while I do a petscan query to add the missing {{Creator}} or {{Institution}} for files that haven't been matched up yet so these show up at one of the subpages of User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata. Multichill (talk) 19:22, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
- I will look into it in a day or two, since I will be heading camping with some boy-scouts today and tomorrow. I wonder if we can do something about Category:Artworks missing infobox template while we are at it. --Jarekt (talk) 19:35, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
- Great! Have a nice weekend. I'm sure we'll get to these at some point. Multichill (talk) 09:27, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
- Did you have a look at this? Multichill (talk) 11:16, 1 April 2017 (UTC)
- I did. I left a comment at User:Multichill/Kladblok. I also added {{Artwork}} to a lot of paintings, and will try to add to some more. --Jarekt (talk) 13:47, 1 April 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, didn't notice your edit! Thanks for helping out. User:Multichill/Painting images no artwork template gets updated twice a day. Quite a few interesting edge cases in that list. Multichill (talk) 14:47, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The
Save page
button now saysPublish page
orPublish changes
on most Wikipedias. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately.Publish page
is when you save a new page andPublish changes
when you edit an existing page. [64] - The tracking category Category:Pages with template loops is now added when a template loop is found. A template loop is for example when a template tries to use a second template that uses the first template. [65]
- English Wikipedia now has cookie blocks. It will come to more wikis in the future. This is an extension to the autoblock system so when a user is blocked, the next time they visit the wiki a cookie will be set. This means that even if the user switches accounts and to a new IP address the cookie will block them again. [66]
Problems
- Wikidata descriptions, aliases and labels that used some characters could not be saved. This has now been fixed. [67]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 4 April at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the next office hour with the Wikidata team. The meeting will be on 5 April at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- New filters for Recent changes will come to Wikidata and Persian, Dutch, Russian, Turkish, Czech and Hebrew Wikipedia on 11 April. The new filters include filtering, highlighting and user intent prediction. User intent prediction means the filter tries to help editors determine if the edit was made in good faith or not. Other wikis will get it later. [68]

Hello Jarekt, I noticed that you worked on the said template thus I suppose you're the most suitable one to attempt to fix a small problem I faced using it. I geolocalized this photograph using Wikidata coordinates ({{Location|||region:IT-RM_dim:150m_heading:267|wikidata=Q29117604}}) but, though it seems to work well, I receive the warning Error: Invalid parameters! (as you can see, too). Now I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. When I use the coordinates instead of | wikidata = the said warning doesn't appear. Regards! -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 08:15, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed. Wikidata based {{Location}} template makes little sense unless the item on wikidata is about the photograph. In most other cases I can think of you should use {{Object location}}. However the issue I think was caused by empty {{{1}}} and {{{2}}}. I will see if I can fix this. --Jarekt (talk) 12:09, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Tidy is going to be replaced with an HTML5 parsing algorithm. Bad HTML in wikitext would cause problems on a number of wikis. There is now a ParserMigration extension on all wikis that you can use to help clean this up. You can read more about how you can use it. [69]
Changes this week
- Some older web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version. [70]
- New filters for Recent changes will come to Wikidata and Persian, Russian, Turkish and French Wikipedia on 11 April. The schedule has been changed to fix the user intent prediction filters for some wikis. User intent prediction means the filter tries to make it easier for editors to determine if the edit was made in good faith or not. Other wikis will get it later. [71]
- The list of special characters in the wikitext editor and the visual editor will now have a group of Canadian Aboriginal characters. [72]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 April. It will be on all wikis from 13 April (calendar).

Permissions for two images files for Kingston Choral Society
Hi Jarek,
In creating a page for Kingston Choral Society I used two images uploaded by a colleague, with an email from an officer of Kingston Choral Society giving full rights. You've marked both images as needing a specific-text email giving the rights specifically, or they will be removed. I'm working on this.
So I've used the tool to generate two such emails, one for each image, and both were sent today to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org by a current officer of the society. I'm writing to let you know, and to ask if I can be told whether those emails have done the trick, as I am new to all this. I'm hoping to have the problem tags removed. I/the society genuinely own all rights to these images and wish to allow Wikipedia full use to them. Pls guide me if there's something else we need to do.

Recent changes
- You can add
?safemode=1
to the end of the URL on Wikimedia wikis to disable your personal CSS and JavaScript. Example:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literature?safemode=1
. This means you can test if a problem is because of your user scripts or gadgets without uninstalling them. [73] - You can now see a list of all autoblocks on Special:AutoblockList. [74]
- The Wikiversity and Wikinews logos are now shown directly from the configuration and not from
[[File:Wiki.png]]
. If you want to change logo or have an anniversary logo, see how to request a configuration change. This is how it already works for other projects. They can request logo changes the same way. [75]

Future changes
- stats.wikimedia.org will be replaced. You can see the new prototype. You can leave feedback on this change.
- Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on a large number of wikis in May. It could be postponed and happen later. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. Users who have tested the feature can give feedback. [76]
- From next week, user scripts using very old deprecated wikibits functions will show errors. These functions have not worked since 2013. You should fix or disable broken scripts. You can see examples of how to upgrade scripts. [77][78]

template help question
Hello Jarekt, i hope you can help me with {{Decade years navbox}}. it seems the template does not like category names including commas.
i added the template to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2016, DE-TH (cat_suffix=, DE-TH
has to be used there) and expected links to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2014, DE-TH and Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2015, DE-TH to be displayed. The template works well on Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2016 in Germany (similar, but no comma in suffix). Do you know a workaround, or can you fix this? Holger1959 (talk) 01:16, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- That is because the template assumes a space before and after the year and Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2016, DE-TH does not have space after year only comma. It is easy to write new template that does not assume spaces, but I do not think we can fix the current one since it is used on 231,932 pages. --Jarekt (talk) 01:32, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks for the good explanation! with so many pages its understandable that this is "won't fix". And an extra template only for a few WLE categories is probably too special. maybe i will find an other solution in the future. Holger1959 (talk) 11:04, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- New filters for recent changes are now available as a beta feature on most wikis. You can turn it on in your preferences. Remaining wikis will have the new filters on 9 May. [79]
- When administrators, bureaucrats and stewards make a user a member of a user group they can now set an expiry date. A user group is for example "administrators" or "bots". This means that they can give someone user rights for a limited time. This is similar to how blocks and page protections can be limited in time. Special:UserRights will have new options for this. You can read more about user groups. [80]
Problems
- Since the data centre test last week the content translation tool has been disabled. This is because of a database problem. It will be back as soon as the problem has been solved. [81]

- Wiktionary will handle interlanguage links in a new way. The Cognate extension will automatically link pages with the same title between Wiktionaries. For this to work all old interlanguage links have to be removed. You can read more about this. [83]

Hi. You tagged File:Radiohead Curfew advert.jpg as missing license information. Forgive me, but despite years of Wiki experience, I still find uploading/licensing media extremely confusing, and always seem to get something wrong. I can't figure out how I should correct the file.
I do not own the image copyright, but I emailed the owner asking for permission, and he granted Wiki full permission, which I have forwarded to the relevant address. (I think.)

Creator
Pilnie poszukuję informacji o zmianach w działaniu Creatora. Z góry dziękuję --Szczebrzeszynski (talk) 15:37, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
- Szczebrzeszynski, Szablon {{Creator}} został ostatnio przepisany by mógł opierać się ne informacjach w Wikidata. --Jarekt (talk) 18:56, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
--Szczebrzeszynski (talk) 18:39, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- Some users have a problem with the watchlist. Some changes in categories make the watchlist a blank page. The developers are working on this. Until this is fixed you can try some things that have helped other editors if you have this problem. You can turn on
Hide categorization of pages
in your watchlist preferences. You can turn offExpand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent
in your watchlist preferences. You can remove problematic categories from Special:EditWatchlist/raw. [89] - There was a problem with the visual editor for several days. You could not save edits that triggered a CAPTCHA. This would for example be when a new user added external links in references. This was fixed on 2 May. [90]
Changes this week
- When you edit you can switch between the visual editor and the wikitext editor. This works if the wiki you edit has the visual editor. The menu will now say
Visual editing
andSource editing
instead ofSwitch to visual editing
andSwitch to code editing
. This is because it was confusing when the menu said you could switch to the editor you were already using. [91] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 9 May at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will be able to get a notification when a page you created is connected to a Wikidata item. This will come to Wikivoyage on 9 May. If there are no problems it will come to most Wikipedias on 30 May. It will come to other projects and English, French and German Wikipedia later in the summer. It will be opt-in for existing users and opt-out for new users. [92][93]
- Markup that looks like code for language variants might need to be fixed. If
-{
is used in transclusions or web addresses it has to be escaped appropriately. You can use-<nowiki/>{
for transclusions and%2D{
in web addresses. A transclusion could for example be when you use-{
in a template:{{1x| sad :-{ face }}
. This is because of some code fixes to the preprocessor and affects all wikis. [94][95]

Template:NARA-image-full "ARC" to "NAID"
Hey Jarek. I was wondering if you could help me to update all instances of the term "ARC" for the NARA identifier in Template:NARA-image-full. As NARA now uses a National Archives Identifier (abbreviated "NAID" for all records), I'd like to use that in future uploads. For now, since there are so many files already uploaded using "ARC", it would be great if you could add a NAID version in just as recognized parameter for each place ARC is used (e.g., "ARC" or "NAID" accepted, "Series ARC" or "Series NAID" accepted, etc.). Thanks so much! Dominic (talk) 19:28, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
- Dominic, Will "Series NAID" be just an alternative name for "Series ARC", "NAID" for "ARC" etc.? --Jarekt (talk) 02:15, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, for now they can just be alternative parameter names, so both work. We can't remove the "ARC" parameter until we edit all the existing uploads using that template, which would be a big job, but I'd just like to be able to use the current terminology for future uploads. Dominic (talk) 12:11, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
- Dominic, I think I am Done. Please check. I also moved one of I18 page to Template:I18n/archive which is used by other templates. I also created d:Q29896325, in case you want to add something to it. --Jarekt (talk) 13:26, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Creator Template
Hi, Please review the rules of the Creator temple. If possible, a self-portrait or a portrait should be placed, and if and only if neither exists one can place an image of a work of the artist. Regards. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 12:48, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- Archaeodontosaurus, Template:Creator explanation of "image" field explains: "Image of the creator. Self-portraits are preferable". Please stick to the use of that field which is consistent with how it was used in the past which is also compatible to wikidata's image (P18) and wikipedia's use of images in people infoboxes. --Jarekt (talk) 12:54, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- Negative. Finish to read the sentence it is possible if the self-portrait does not need to put a portrait by another author and if the latter does not exist an image of one of these works. This point is widely used, I have not invented it, and many others have understood it.--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 13:50, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- Archaeodontosaurus, what text are you looking at? All I see is "Image of the creator. Self-portraits are preferable. One can use CatScan2 to find all the creator templates without images used within files which are in the Category:Self-portraits.
- Corresponds to image (P18) in Wikidata. Be careful, might contain a work by or an image of the author. Need to add some smart logic or better: Create a new more specific property."
- The last bullet is about how one has to be careful with use of image (P18) because back then P18 occasionally contained a works by the author and we did not want to copy those. Is there any other text you see somewhere? --Jarekt (talk) 14:09, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- I have understood the technical nature of the possibility of creating a specific field for a work. I understand that it is not desirable and I agree. My point concerns only the authors, necessarily very old, for whom we have no image and we will never have any. Rather than leaving the field empty, it is better to place the image of one of their work. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 14:50, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- The issue is that for last 10 years we were using this field for images depicting authors and we have mostly hand curated dataset of such images. The only case we used images by be authors (instead of depicting the authors) was namepieces of anonymous masters, like Creator:Master of the Brunswick Diptych. In all other cases I find the current practice of not having an image preferable to having wrong image. If you want we can discuss it further at Template talk:Creator. --Jarekt (talk) 15:09, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

- Archaeodontosaurus, what text are you looking at? All I see is "Image of the creator. Self-portraits are preferable. One can use CatScan2 to find all the creator templates without images used within files which are in the Category:Self-portraits.

Recent changes
- You can now use ISBNs to automatically generate citations in the visual editor. This works on wikis that have enabled Citoid. [96]
- The Two Column Edit Conflict View is available as a beta feature on all wikis. It is a new interface for the edit conflict resolution page. [97]
Problems
- The
mediawiki.util
library does not load automatically any more. Your Special:MyPage/common.js may use it. If you have technical problems that started a couple of weeks ago you can try addingmw.loader.using( 'mediawiki.util' ).done(function(){
as the first line in the file and});
as a last one. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/18 issue. [98]
Changes this week
- The RevisionSlider extension will be a default feature on all wikis. RevisionSlider is an easier way to move between changes in the page history. It has been a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia and a beta feature on all wikis. You will be able to turn it off in your preferences. [99]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Administrators will soon be able to search through deleted pages. [100][101]
- Markup that looks like code for language variants might need to be fixed. Tech News wrote about this last week. If
-{
is used in transclusions or web addresses it has to be escaped appropriately. You can use-<nowiki/>{
for transclusions and%2D{
in web addresses. This is because of some code fixes to the preprocessor and affects all wikis. You can now see the full list of wikis with this problem and help fix them to avoid that things break later this month. You might find false positives. You can read more about what to fix. [102][103]
Older unreported changes
- Your Meta user page is shown on all wikis where you don't have a local user page. You can now add the magic word
__NOGLOBAL__
to your Meta user page to stop this. [104][105]

Module:Wikidata label
Hello. {{This template}} (assuming all the others countries templates as well) displays the country name correctly (in my language, be-tarask, is Славаччына), but for somewhat reason links to an article at the be-wiki (not be-tarask). Do You have an idea how to fix it? --Renessaince (talk) 07:27, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- Renessaince, I track it down to phabricator:T112426, but I am not sure how to handle it. I do not want to write messy fixes in Module:Wikidata label, because I am likely to break something else in this very widely used module. Please let them know at phabricator:T112426 how that affects you, as I suspect that this might be a low priority issue for them. --Jarekt (talk) 12:52, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated
Hello Jarekt, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. NLI again
Hello Jarekt,
You have operate now JarektBot that changed creator templates to the new format but in the new format NLI ID (The National Library of Israel) disappear. see Creator:Moshe Milner and see the same creator before her. Can you please fix it somehow? -- Geagea (talk) 01:23, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Geagea, The way it works now is that {{Authority control}} supports much more different identifiers but sorts the available ones in an order of relevance based on the preferred language and in case of Creator table only 6 most relevant are shown so many individual country libraries will only show up to people from that country if other more relevant links are present. As a result NLI will show if your preferred language is Hebrew:
משה מילנר (1946–) | |||
---|---|---|---|
Miylner, Moše; Milner, Mosheh; Moshé Milner; Milner, M.; Mîlner, Moše; Miylner, Mošeh | ||
תאריך הלידה | 1946 | ||
and not show if your preferred language is English:
Moshe Milner (1946–) | |||
---|---|---|---|
Alternative names |
Miylner, Moše; Milner, Mosheh; Moshé Milner; Milner, M.; Mîlner, Moše; Miylner, Mošeh | ||
Description | Israeli photographer | ||
Date of birth | 1946 | ||
Location of birth | Germany | ||
Authority file |
. Does that make sense? --Jarekt (talk) 01:42, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, that make sense. But I, like a lot's of other users from he.wiki, using English as a preferred language. The result in fact that the Hebrew version got -BNF and in the English version we got -NLI. I think both should be in both languages. In some cases we have only VIAF and NLI so in the English version we see only VIAF. I think that if we have all in every language is the simple and the best way. -- Geagea (talk) 05:15, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Geagea, using all is no longer an option, since we support too many of them. For example see below how Creator:Leonardo da Vinci would look like. Full set of identifiers is just one click away at wikidata or VIAF.

. --Jarekt (talk) 11:47, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- But if there are only 2 or 5 or 10 authority controls then all can be there I believe. I really don't see a point in removing BNF id from the hebrew version or removing NLI id from the english version. I think that if there are 10 items or less, all should be seen.-- Geagea (talk) 13:18, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Geagea, Ok so I drew the threshold at 6 and you draw the threshold at 10 identifiers per Creator template. That is not that different. Creator:Leonardo da Vinci has 21 and its Wikidata page has 70 identifiers, which might be added to {{Authority control}} in the future (if community decides). I suspect that changing the threshold from 6 to 10 will add NLI only in small fractions of pages as most will have either less than 6 or more than 10, but it would make many creator templates look much wider. I do not see much advantage that NLI has over 70 other identifiers we have for d:Q762 or other similar items. Actually we have 7 NLI identifiers for d:Q762 so they seem less useful than others as identifiers. If you want we can start broader discussion to see what is the optimal number of identifiers shown by {{Authority control}} in {{Creator}} templates and how wide should {{Creator}} templates be. I would not mind having broader consensus on that. --Jarekt (talk) 13:49, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Well, the situation which there are more than one identifier happens also in other cases and we use only the first one. Normally they should be unified to one id. Anyway I am less care the case of Leonardo da Vinci. I'm more care the case when the person is a Hebrew author or Israeli. As a matter of fact I do not see a problem with wider creator template, Anyway 6 id's are to low (should be at least 8). May be it is also option to use only the name of the identifier and the link will lead to the id number. For example instead of VIAF: 24604287 we have only VIAF. That can allow much more id's. -- Geagea (talk) 21:16, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- I like your idea of not showing the identifier numbers just names. I will try to look into it. However I am a bit swamped with current work on module:Creator, so I can not promise when will I get to rewriting Module:Authority control. If nothing happens in a while feel free to ping me. If you know Lua, you are also welcome to try the change yourself. --Jarekt (talk) 14:20, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- In your free time, of course. Thank you for your answer. I don't know Lua so when you have a time...-- Geagea (talk) 09:26, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can see new files on Special:NewFiles. You can now pick which dates you want to see files from. [109]
- When you read Wikipedia on a mobile device the first paragraph now comes before the infobox. [110]
- You can now remove navigation elements from your results when you search. This could for example be part of an infobox that is only there to help you find the previous or next article. [111]
- New users on Wikivoyages and Wikipedias (except French, English and German) now get a notification when a page they created is connected to Wikidata. Other wikis will get it 13 June. [112]
Problems
- The MediaWiki version from two weeks ago was rolled back. It was fixed late last week. Changes that were planned to go out last week did not happen. [113]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia wikis can show fewer links to articles in other languages. This is to make it easier to find the languages likely to be useful to the reader or editor. Everyone can still click to see the full list. Logged-in users who use the compact language links will see languages they have in their Babel box on their user page in the first, shorter list. You can turn the compact language list off or on in your preferences. [114]
- You can choose what dates to look at when you look at a user's contributions. [115]
- When you click on your watchlist in the mobile view you get a list of all pages in the watchlist instead of the latest changes to them. Logged-in users with at least ten edits will now get the latest changes instead. [116]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 June. It will be on all wikis from 8 June (calendar).
- String comparisons in Scribunto modules are now always done case-insensitively by byte order. Before they were sometimes in a case-sensitive US-English collation order. This could break some modules. [117]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 6 June at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The 2006 wikitext editor will be removed the week of 27 June. This is the old toolbar with small square blue buttons. You can see a picture of it. 0.03% of active Wikimedia editors use this old tool. They will not see a toolbar at all. [118][119]
- Wikimedia wikis use OCG to create PDFs. The OCG code has a lot of problems and will stop working. It has to be replaced. An alternative is Electron. You can tell the developers what you need the PDF service to be able to do. Electron already works on German Wikipedia. It will be on English Wikipedia later this week so you can test it there too. [120]
- The Architecture Committee will change and get a new name. You can read and comment on the draft that describes the new committee.

Creator template
Hello Jarekt, how are you going? I created Creator:Eshaq Jahangiri yesterday. Please excuse me, I didn't realise it was not what we used the template or namespace for, and I'll take a look at the guidelines again. However, it was a surprise to discover it deleted without any notice. In the future, would you mind notifying me or anyone else in the same situation with an explanation as to why it happened? So that we can learn from the experience. Cheers! seb26 (talk) 15:01, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- seb26, You are right I should have explained it more. You should read Commons:Creator, but the idea is that creator templates are are used for people that create a lot of writing, artwork, etc. and the templates are used in the author field of the infoboxes and Creator:Eshaq Jahangiri seems unlikely to be used that way. --Jarekt (talk) 16:12, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for this! Noted seb26 (talk) 02:41, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again Jarekt. I also created Creator:Ali Khamenei a while ago. Do you know of a template that allows this same biographical information to be presented on the page in a localisable table with birthdate and image and such, but for when the subject is not a creator of works? seb26 (talk) 01:40, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
- seb26, You can do this. It shows the infobox, but it is not a template and we do not watch or maintain it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:47, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

OTRS backlog
Hi. Wondering if I can help with the OTRS backlog. I came to WC in 2007 to add images but find that I spend more time and research, nominating 'delete' and 'speedy'. Today, I helped to speedy 5 images. See User talk:Uptan. So I think I can guess what OTRS reviewers need to do. Does OTRS have probation period to see if I can make good judgments? P.g.champion (talk) 21:16, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- P.g.champion, The place to volunteer to OTRS is at m:OTRS/Volunteering. One nice thing about the task is that you can cherry-pick which ticket you want to handle, so at the beginning you can pick "easy" cases that well fit one of the predictable categories. And we do have many well written standard replies that cover most cases we see. You can also check Commons talk:OTRS/Archive 2 for some thoughts on handling tickets in permissions-commons queue. Thanks for volunteering and let me know if I can help with anything. --Jarekt (talk) 12:25, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

- Administrators can soon search for deleted page titles and find results that are similar to what they searched for. Today the search only finds pages that are exactly the same as what you search for. This is to make it easier to find pages when you don't know the exact title. Administrators on Arabic, Catalan, English, Persian, German, Italian, Polish, and Russian Wikipedia and on mediawiki.org can test this by adding
&fuzzy=1
to the end of the web address when looking at Special:Undelete. [125][126]

Technical question
I'm translating into Croatian Template:Other date. In Croatian, in all cases years are written with dot (e.g. 1910.), but decades are written without dot and with suffix -ih (e.g. first decade of 20th century is written as 1910-tih). Which parameter should be used in turn of the decade (year without dot at the end)?--Ma▀▄Ga 10:24, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- The code responsible for this is Module:I18n/complex date. You are welcome to propose the changes. You can also just tell me which Template:Complex date/examples in Croatian are correct and which are wrong and if they are wrong tell what they should be. --Jarekt (talk) 16:13, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- Everything is correct but decades (written above).--Ma▀▄Ga 18:55, 18 June 2017 (UTC)
- User:MaGa,
{{complex date|decade|1910|lang=hr}}
gives "1910-ih ", which I guess is correct (without dot).{{complex date|turn of the decade|1920|lang=hr}}
gives "kraj 1910-ih i početak 1920-ih" which I guess is not correct. Template:Complex_date/examples&uselang=hr has a lot of entries in red which must also be wrong. --Jarekt (talk) 22:17, 18 June 2017 (UTC)- It is exactly. What should I write in template translation for "turn of the decade" at talk page? My english is not so good, maybe we don't understand.--Ma▀▄Ga 15:16, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Logical bug in Module:Creator
I appeal to you as a developer of this module. It seems like this module uses wikidata property d:Property:P937 for filling "Work location" field. But in Adolf Hitler case it causes that work location of his paintings was Führerbunker, last of P937 values in Hitler's element. It is obviously incorrect data and needs to be fixed. I think "work location" field should not be filled from wikidata, if WD has more than one P937 value for certain element. MBH (talk) 14:34, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for alerting me. I should probably show all the work location from P937. Module:Creator is very much work in progress and I hope I will get to work location at some point. I am working on dates at the moment. In the mean time please use "workloc" field to overwrite P937 based locations. --Jarekt (talk) 14:42, 3 July 2017 (UTC)

- There was a problem with maps on Wikimedia wikis that used <mapframe> when you clicked on the link to another map service. Open Street Map or Google Maps are examples of other map services. If you had marked a place on the map the marker would not be in the same place on the other map service. It was in the middle of the map. This has now been fixed. [133]
Changes this week
- Very old and inactive unpublished translations in the Content Translation database will be removed. This is because of technical maintenance. If you have not worked on a translation after 1 January 2016 you will lose it after 6 July. If you want to keep the unfinished translation you need to open it before 6 July with the Content Translation tool. You can continue working on it later. Translations that were started or have been worked on after 1 January 2016 will not be affected.
- There is no new Mediawiki version this week.
- EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. It works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. Tech News wrote about this in the 2017/07 issue. [134]

Credits, recognition and hijacking of images
Just posted a bit of a rant on Commons:Village_pump#Using_Wikipedia_to_reference_other_WMF_projects_and_the_dangers_thereof. As you are clued up on this credit stuff, I would be grateful if you could cast an eye over it, to see if you think I have a legitimate concern for WC contributors future recognition and upholding the rights to their images remaining free forever. WC is just the host. It is our responsibility as individual up-loaders to guard our copyright and I foresee problems ahead. P.g.champion (talk) 17:22, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Zaginione zdjęcie
Dzień dobry.
Bardzo proszę o pomoc. 14 lipca 2017 wgrałem wykadrowane zdjęcie Maria Andrejczyk i Beata Szydło.JPG ze źródła:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/premierrp/35057801520 (licencja PD)
i zostawiłem do potwierdzenia licencji, a plik nagle dosłownie i całkowicie zniknął.
Category:Beata Szydło in 2017, a takich plików jest dużo więcej.
Dziękuję.
Artur Andrzej (talk) 20:29, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Artur, zobacz User_talk:Halibutt#Template:Polish_KPRM_files. --Jarekt (talk) 01:53, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
KPRM
Re: User_talk:Halibutt#Template:Polish_KPRM_files
Może @Ankry, Polimerek, and Boston9: mają jakiś pomysł? Halibutt (talk) 09:23, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- Some pages show the error
Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject
. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that uses Wikidata. The developers are working on fixing the problem. You can fix a page by opening it for editing and then saving without changing anything. [147] - Wikidata and German Wikipedia could not be edited for an hour on 28 July. You can read why and how we could avoid it in the future in the incident report.

In my experience the progress in Wikidata comes very slowly. --Jarekt (talk) 14:10, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- The reason why I dislike this is that we duplicate info that is on wikidata (link commons<->wikidata) in wikicommons.
- The day that feature arrives, we will suffer to suppress this duplication.
- Also, in the meantime, It is difficult to explain: sometime you have to provide the itemId, sometimes not.
- So most of the time contributors provide itemId in wikicommons but don't add the wikidata link to commons (worth case scenario).
- Cheers Liné1 (talk) 15:48, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- I do a LOT of work with Creator templates lately and I do a lot of work on commons<->wikidata synchronization. Pages missing "commons<-wikidata" link end up in Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item missing linkback. Pages missing "commons->wikidata" link can be detected using this query. I also have Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: mismatching linkback for cases where page on Commons was renamed without updating Wikidata and Category:Creator templates with mismatching linkback for pages that were renamed without updating "linkback" field (if used). It is quite a mess and I hope to create better system of alerting users about the issues, so I do not have to be fixing it as much. --Jarekt (talk) 16:09, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
- Excellent work !!!
- I did Category:Pages with biology property incorrect on Wikidata
- A bit like your work ;-)

Recent changes
- You can now see which Wikipedia language versions are read in a specific country. This tool is called Wikipedia Views Visualized. [150]
- The Architecture Committee is now the Wikimedia Technical Committee. You can read the charter. [151]
Problems
- You can get an email when a page on your watchlist was edited. You can choose not to get emails for minor edits. There is a bug that means that you then don't get an email when someone does a normal edit after a minor edit. The developers are working on fixing this. Until it has been fixed you can activate "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" at the bottom of "User profile" in your preferences if you want to. [152]
- The thanks button sometimes didn't work for mobile users. This was because of a new bug and has now been fixed. [153]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 August. It will be on all wikis from 10 August (calendar).
Future changes
- Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia. Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP can't connect securely to the wikis. When we allow them to do so it means that we get less security for everyone else. If you use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP you can install Firefox 52 ESR instead. Around 0.1% of the traffic to the Wikimedia wikis comes from Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. [154]
- Links to sections on Wikipedia don't work well in languages that don't use the Latin script. The URL in the address bar in your browser shows Latin characters like
.D0.A1.D1.81.D1.8B.D0.BB.D0.BA.D0.B8
instead of the section heading in the wiki's language. Links to sections in non-Latin scripts will be in the script of that wiki in the future. This will happen in the next few months. [155][156] - Wiki pages printed by the web browser "Print" function will have an updated style. This new style will be similar to the when you download a page as PDF. It will be better at showing tables, infoboxes and headings. [157][158]

Recent changes
- Bureaucrats can now set users as confirmed. Previously only stewards could do this on most wikis. Nothing will change for wikis that have previously decided to let administrators set users as confirmed. [159]
Problems
- The symbols in the language list that show that an article is good or featured in that language doesn't work. Links to the Commons category in the sidebar doesn't work either. The developers are working on fixing it. [160][161]
Changes later this week

Recent changes
- You can now test the new Timeless skin on the test wiki and mediawiki.org. You can turn it on in your preferences. You can report bugs in Phabricator. It will come to more wikis soon. [162][163]
- Your watchlist can now have the option to unwatch pages. You have to turn this on in your preferences. [164]
- If a table has several columns you can often choose which column you want to use to sort the table. This has not worked for some columns for readers who have used Firefox or Safari. This has now been fixed. [165]
- The RelatedArticles extension has shown related pages on Wikivoyages. You will now see the related pages at the end of the article together with an image. Previously the links were in the sidebar. Wikis that want this extension can request it on Phabricator.
Changes later this week
- Videos will now be played in the WebM format in all browsers. Previously some browsers used Ogg Theora (.ogv). If you use Safari, Internet Explorer or Edge you may see slower playback speed at high resolutions. Instead we will get better quality and smaller file size. You can still upload video as Ogg files. They are automatically converted to WebM. This doesn't affect Ogg audio files. [166]
- The default font in the edit window will change for some users this week. Instead of using the browser default, it will be monospace. Users can change this in their preferences. This should only change this for some users on Macs and iOS devices. [167]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 August. It will be on all wikis from 24 August (calendar).

Wikidata
Hello my friend,
We both work on wikidata arround wikicommons.
But this work I do on Category:Pages with biology property incorrect on Wikidata is killing me!
Do you have a way to set up a bot that:
- copies item's sitelink-to-wikicommons to item's P373 (Commons category) if P373 is empty and wikicommons starts with Category:?
- copies item's sitelink-to-wikicommons to item's P935 (Commons gallery) if P935 is empty and wikicommons does not start with Category:?
The last guy I asked did a one time run (So I have to do the new one by hand?)
Also he was reluctant to do a full run, so he limited to P31 (instance of)='taxon' (Q16521). But there are other interesting values like 'monotypic taxon' (Q310890), 'fossil taxon' (Q23038290), 'clade' (Q713623), 'species aggregate' (Q1297859) and 'Wikimedia category' (Q4167836).
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 13:35, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, On Wikidata we do not do much by bots but by SPARQL queries and QuickStatement tool. For example taxon items where item does not have P373 (Commons category) but it has a sitelink-to-wikicommons that starts with "Category:" can be found by a query I saved here. If you need other queries you can study the SPARQL examples or ask for help. I keep a running journal of queries I found useful at d:User:Jarekt/queries. If you run that query you will get ~700 q-codes / category pairs. You can take that info and convert it to Quick Statements (QS) commands to add them to Wikidata. The best tutorial on QS is here. QS has 2 versions: version one here here and version 2 here. I had some trouble running version 1 so at the moment I only use version 2, but the commands are the same. The QS commands are easily created in a spreadsheet (like Excel) to add P373 to Q75630 you need
Q75630 P373 "Necrolestes"
command with tabs instead of spaces. and the easiest way to create them is to keep q-codes in one column P373 in the second column and categories in third one. Adding such command to Import commands / version 1 format window should give you something like this. If you lod in and press "Run" you will add it. Does this approach make sense? If something is not clear let me know and I will spell it out in more details. --Jarekt (talk) 01:48, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Syntax highlighting is now a beta feature on Wikimedia wikis with text written from left to right. It will come to right-to-left wikis later. This beta feature is based on CodeMirror. [168][169]
- You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device or IP address that have logged in to your account before you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can turn this off or choose to get an email notification in your preferences. You can also turn on to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address. [170]
Problems
- Some pages show the error
Lua error in mw.wikibase.entity.lua at line 34: The entity data must be a table obtained via mw.wikibase.getEntityObject
. This problem happens on pages with a Lua module that use Wikidata. This has now been fixed and no new pages will get this problem. You still need to fix pages that were broken before and still show the error message. You can see how on this page. [171]
Changes later this week
- You can block users from sending you notifications. [172]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 August. It will be on all wikis from 31 August (calendar).
Meetings

- You can join the next meeting with the Technical Committee. The topic this week is Migrate to HTML5 section ids. The meeting will be on 30 August at 21:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- In the future you will have global preferences. This means you could set something in your preferences to work in the same way on all wikis. You will not be forced to use global preferences. The developers are now asking if editors need exceptions. This is where you want to use global settings on almost all wikis, but have some wikis where you want it to work in a different way. If you want this you need to tell the developers now. You can do so on the talk page. [173]
- New filters for edit review is a beta feature to improve recent changes pages. It will work on watchlists from 5 September. [174]
- The jQuery library will be upgraded to version 3 in September 2017. Wikis can ask on Phabricator to get it early, so they can help find and solve problems now.

W skrócie chodzi o to, żeby wywołać szablon {{zabytek nieruchomy|Q1083927}} [175] a on zwracał tekst:
Ta fotografia przedstawia zabytek wpisany do rejestru zabytków pod numerem A/1658/97 z 15 gru 1997.
Yarl 💭 20:29, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
- Yarl, Nie wszystko rozumiem. Wyciągnąć "A/1658/97" z wikidata jest łatwo:
{{#statements:P3424|from=Q1083927}}
{{Zabytek nieruchomy|590617}}
i link https://tools.wmflabs.org/heritage/api/api.php?action=search&srcountry=pl&format=html&srid=590617 . --Jarekt (talk) 01:48, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Category:Line scan camera
Hi Jarekt,
Thanks for adding category:Line scan camera to the cable car photo. However, I've already created Category:Strip photography, which is similar. Most of the photos in Category:Strip photography were created with film strip photography, which is technically subtly different from a digital line scan camera, but the final result is more or less identical to a line scan camera. Seeing as there are very few true line scan photos on Wikimedia Commons, is it really necessary to make a new category? dllu (t,c) 16:59, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- It is actually not that rare all Push broom scanners are Line scan cameras so do all container size scanners in Category:Cargo scanning X-rays. Also all Category:Photos taken with scanners were using scanner as Line scan camera. I will expand that category. --Jarekt (talk) 17:36, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- Good point. However, perhaps we should make a distinction between "Photos taken with a line scan camera" and "Line scan camera". In the latter category, we can put pictures of the cameras themselves. I have two line scan cameras, and I can contribute some photos of them one day. dllu (t,c) 08:03, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
- I read more on Strip photography and it sounds very much like my understanding of "Line scan camera". I will skip creation of new categories. --Jarekt (talk) 12:15, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello
I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.
Cheers,

Template loops with Autotranslate
Hello Jarekt, I did, of course, not check them all, but a lot templates using Autotranslate produce now a template loop on their doc pages (edit: more precise, on the doc subpages it works, but not on the template pages where the documentation usually is read — Speravir – 22:51, 12 September 2017 (UTC)), also template {{Autotranslate}} itself. Since this is using Module:Fallback, where you changed something recently, and (at least my notice of) the loop issue is also quite new, I guess it's related. Could you, please, investigate this? BTW: Category Pages with template loops has just now about 20000 entries, a significant amount of these should be caused by Autotranslate. — Speravir – 22:42, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, all the institution and creator templates in the category could also be caused by this: Both {{Institution}} and {{Creator}} use {{Fallback}}. — Speravir – 23:03, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
- I noticed this, but I have no idea how that category is assigned. I read that tomorrow there will be a fix to some issue with detecting template loops. I hope that will help me debug it. --Jarekt (talk) 01:40, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
- By any chance it already disappears after this fix. We will see. — Speravir – 16:43, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
- I noticed your reaction in the Help Desk. So, thank you. — Speravir – 15:49, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

- The Wikimedia Foundation Readers department has proposed changing the mobile website. You can read more on mediawiki.org. This would be a big change.
- You can't use OCG to create PDFs after 1 October. This is because of technical problems. You can still create PDFs. Tech News 2017/37 said the function to create PDFs from books would still work. It is now clear it will not work for the next few months. The developers are working on fixing this. You can read more on mediawiki.org.

Recent changes
- You can now use preload features in the visual editor. This means you can create links to create new pages and some text will already be in the edit window when someone clicks on it. [197]
Changes later this week
- If you have turned on "Automatically enable most beta features" you will now get the 2017 wikitext editor. Before this you had to turn it on manually even though it is a beta feature. [198]
- Special:Block and Special:Unblock will get the OOUI look. [199]
- The jQuery library will be upgraded to version 3 on all Wiktionary wikis from 2 October. It will be on all non-Wikipedia wikis from 4 October. It will be on all wikis from 5 October. [200]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 October. It will be on all wikis from 5 October (calendar).
Meetings

Photo challenge
Hi there. I'm not sure if you are one of the organizers of the photo challenge, but there seems to be a technical glitch. I posted two pictures (one to huts, and one to rusted places) about 12 hours ago and they appeared on the page I added them to. However, they don't appear on the main photo challenge page. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:17, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- Probably purging the page will solve the problem. Or waiting. --Jarekt (talk) 03:04, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi Jarekt. Please would you kindly correct the above file page title to "Barnsley FC archive images 006.jpg"? An embarrassing error on my part. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 12:57, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The number of active users listed by
{{NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS}}
and on Special:Statistics will now only include Wikidata edits as activity on Wikidata and not on other wikis too. [202] - Previously you could create wiki links starting with two colons. Now you need to use one colon. [[::File:X.jpg]] now has to be [[:File:X.jpg]]. There is now a new Linter category. You can see a list on Special:Linterrors/multi-colon-escape. The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. You can read more about using Linter. [203]
Problems
- You will not be able to edit or upload files to Commons for around 30 minutes on 11 October. This will start at 06:00 UTC. This is because of work to let Commons show 3D models. [204]
Changes later this week
- The font in the edit window is monospace by default. Today you can change preferences to another font family or use "the browser default" instead of monospace. Switching to the browser default has only changed the font on Macs. The option to use browser default will be removed this week. [205]
- If you want to print a page or make a PDF of a page you can do so in the side menu. The way the pages look when you do this will change. You can read more on mediawiki.org.
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 October. It will be on all wikis from 12 October (calendar).

Aerial pictures from a drone
Jarek, a quick question to you: for the first time in my life I will be uploading a drone pic. The OTRS will be provided by the company which leased it/paid for this service. But who is the author of a drone photo? Shall I ask who operated the drone as well? Or simply state the company, or "an anonymous photographer hired by...." Many thanks for you support! Boston9 (talk) 04:54, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- The OTRS permission is from the "creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright" so I think you can let the company decide who that is, but either way will work. I do not think drone vs. earth-bound photography makes any difference here. --Jarekt (talk) 12:01, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

OTRS issue
You might want to take a peek at this discussion:
If I am reading correctly, it appears you created this guide. As an aside, I've been away from permissions work for a while and want to return to it so this is good timing. I'm preparing some discussions of best practices and this will be a good starting point.
On an unrelated topic is that you in the Seneca rocks photo? I've heard of the place but never been there. I have been to Joshua Tree but don't remember that belay. I did some climbing many years ago mostly in the gunks.--Sphilbrick (talk) 19:58, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Sphilbrick, I replied to the inquiry. Thanks for letting me know. Any addition or correction to steps in that table would be appriciated. Yes it is me on Seneca Rocks, it is a great place and not too far from Northern Virginia where I live. Most of Seneca do not look like that, but this one special place makes you feel like you are on some desert tower or something, like this spot. --Jarekt (talk) 22:19, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- When you edit a template with the visual editor it follows the template's
format
configuration on how to save it. You can now change the format in more powerful ways if your wiki wants it. [206][207] - The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It has been a beta feature for the last five months. You can now try out the new interface on a page where you will actually get simulated edit conflicts. You can give feedback to the developers.
Problems
- There is a problem with recent changes pages and your watchlist that show a large number of pages. Until it is fixed, Wikidata edits will not be shown on recent changes or in your watchlist on Commons or Russian Wikipedia. If necessary, Wikidata edits will be removed from all wikis. [208]
- Notifications are not working for some actions. For example some users don't get a notification when they are mentioned. The developers are working on fixing this. [209]
- Users on some wikis could not change their preferences. This has now been fixed. [210]
Changes later this week
- Editors and readers who still use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP will not be able to use Wikipedia from 17 October. [211]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 October. It will be on all wikis from 19 October (calendar).

Information about past removal of {{Location}} attributes
I noticed in the Great {{Location}} Thread over on COM:VP that you mentioned “cleaning up unused attributes
parameters from {{Location}} templates”. I'm waiting for permission to run a bot that would add source
attributes to over a million {{Location}} templates. Are you able to refer me to a description of the previous cleaning process so I can check that I'm not adding attributes that ought not to be added? --bjh21 (talk) 11:40, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- The discussion can be found at [[212]], but the idea of the fight was over the fact that attributes parameter of {{Location}} template has very specific fields listed here and they are passed in the URL to GeoHack tool. Attributes with information outside those definitions are not used and were breaking some tools scraping the coordinates to some database. So there was a call to help out with cleaning them up. After some discussion I had my bot remove
type:landmark
from the attribution parameter which was no longer used. I was than attacked by people using it to tag images as "landscapes". --Jarekt (talk) 12:20, 19 October 2017 (UTC)- Thanks. That's very helpful. --bjh21 (talk) 13:32, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

wikidata
Hello my friend,
You perhaps know that I added in {{VN}} a wikidata detector (See this cat for more details.
This weekend my detector detected a lot of problems.
They have all the same reason: a duplication of item.
'Q6319539' and 'Category:Taurotragus' (Q41501954) are an example.
I think that this duplication have been created by a bot.
Do you have time to investigate this problem ?
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 11:19, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- Liné1, I agree that d:Q6319539 and d:Q41501954 were duplicates and I merged them. I looked at Category:Pages with biology property incorrect on Wikidata but could not find other duplicates. If there were a lot of duplicates created at the same time by the same person, than we should make him aware of the issue. --Jarekt (talk) 11:40, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, I was a bit fast ;-)
- In fact {{VN}} complains when wikidata items have no english label (sortkey F).
- English labels are important, for the default display + when I set the english label, wikidata often complains about the label being used by another items (which is in 95% cases a duplicate) ;-)
- What I found out: Dexbot created the duplicated item (Q41502875), then it attached a enlink.
- I think that the issue is that Q6319539 never has an enlink.
- Cheers Liné1 (talk) 12:11, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- I have the same need for English labels with creator templates, end even set up a process to detect it. See here. --Jarekt (talk) 12:32, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Welcome to the Structured Commons focus group!
Hello! Thank you very much for signing up to the community focus group for Structured Commons :-)
- How to organize ourselves?
This focus group is new and experimental, and I welcome your tips and thoughts on how we can organize this in the most convenient and productive way. For now, I have posted a few separate topics on the focus group's talk page. Please add your questions there too! If we all add that page to our watchlist, that's probably a good way to stay up to date with current discussions. Steinsplitter has also initiated a brand new IRC channel specifically for Structured Commons: wikimedia-commons-sd (webchat) which we invite you to join. Please let me know if you have other ideas on how to work together.
- Current updates
- For your agenda: IRC office hour about Structured Commons, Tuesday 21 November at 18:00 UTC in wikimedia-office (webchat).
- A newsletter about Structured Commons is sent out later today. Its frequency will probably increase from now on. You are warmly invited to contribute to next issues — don't hesitate to add updates.
- The documentation and info pages about Structured Data on Commons have received a thorough (and much overdue) update this week, in order to get them ready for all the upcoming work. Obsolete pages were archived. There are undoubtedly still a lot of omissions and bits that are unclear. You can help by editing boldly, and by leaving feedback and tips on the talk pages.
- More things (logo? tools?) to be discussed on the focus group's talk page!
Warmly, your community liaison, SandraF (WMF) (talk)

"Stanisław Masłowski - Materiały do życiorysu i twórczości", Wrocław 1957, Wyd. "Ossolineum".
Z czym mamy do czynienia obecnie - trudno przesądzać.
"Ossolineum" (wkładka kredowa pomiędzy stronami 240 i 241) i załadowałem do Wikimedii - jako: File:Stanisław Masłowski (1853-1926) photo portrait of 1925 copy of book.jpg (Stanisław Masłowski, w Zalesiu pod Warszawą, 1925).
Andrzej Masłowski - jedrzej1224 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jedrzej1224 (talk • contribs) 20:13, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
Dom aukcyjny albo poprzedni właściciel zrobili z tego autoportret by go lepiej sprzedać.
Można by mu nadać nazwę np.: "File:Picture of unknown artist", w żadnym przypadku nie kojarząc go z wyżej wmienionym imieniem i nazwiskiem.
To dodatkowo pogłębia wątpliwości.
Dołączam wyrazy poważania i sympatii.

- Zmieniłem nazwę pliku na File:Stanisław Masłowski (?) - Autoportret (?).jpg.
/* Wikidata */ modified book template to push metadata?!?
Hi. Just blue skying ... how feasible is it for the book template to be adapted to push edition metadata to wikidata? I know that we would have to have creator templates in place, and look at publisher detail for matches, outside of that what would be the issues? Is this something that needs to align with the structured data, or has a play with structured data? My asking is that for "books" they are editions, and their structured data will be somewhat different from those using information template. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:45, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- I assume that most book data would live on Wikidata, and only file or edition specific details would be on Structured data. A little bit like with Artworks, two different digitization of the same artwork would share an item on Wikidata, but digitization details would live on Commons. We also might have scans of books, or paintings not notable enough for Wikidata, and the full data would live on Commons. All those "details" have to be still hashed out, so join the Structured data discussion forums so use cases you ere interested in are being covered. I imagine that Wikidata will have q-codes and Commons will have m-codes (or some other letter), which would be very similar in many ways, except that data stored in q-codes would be visible to other projects (like Wikisource) and data stored in m-codes will not be. I do not know if that would be a final implementation but that is one possible solution. --Jarekt (talk) 04:02, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, they are significantly different. I was approaching this as a path for pushing the (book) edition data through to Wikidata. We have a triangle of edition information with Commons/Wikidata/Wikisource(s) and no ready means to get that migrated into Wikidata. Where we have a well-completed book template here, I thought that it would make sense to have the means to push it into Wikidata. Further if the data is not in the template, then in future times the linking may allow the display of Wikidata fields in empty fields. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:41, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Help with a fix
Hi Jarekt. I'm here to ask for help in correcting the code of Module:Authority control. The property P2558 is giving an error message in categories like: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jean_L%C3%A9on_Palli%C3%A8re I guess its a problem with the restrictions of value in the module, but since i'm not proficient with the code (and don't have the correct permissions to edit), i'm asking if you could check it out. Also i wanted to ask you why the property doesn't show in the template of {{Creator:Jean Léon Pallière}} and it does in the Authority control template. Regards and thanks.--Zeroth (talk) 19:50, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed About some identifiers showing and not showing in different templates. Authority control displayed inside Creator templates usually show only 5-6 most relevant identifiers (based on "importance" and language), otherwise if we show 45 of them it will look very crowded {{Authority control}} does not have those restrictions. --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks!. About the importance, could you tell me how it's calculated?. I'm asking you because this identifier is probably very important for the uruguayan authors but not so important for non-uruguayans.--Zeroth (talk) 20:56, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- If you look at
conf
, there islang
field. The algorithm first looks for identifiers with emptylang
field, than at identifiers with matching language and finally at identifiers with non matching language. If we need 5 identifiers than first 5 existing identifiers in that order are pulled. I do not remember if that is a bug or intentional but autores.uy has wrong language code so it is always in the last group. --Jarekt (talk) 02:22, 31 October 2017 (UTC)- I see. That must be an error. There is no such 'uy' language. Could you change it with the right one? ("es"), please?.--Zeroth (talk) 17:10, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Maybe you can explain the use of of the creator-template.
I don't understand, why did you add | type = commons user

makes the template disappear from most maintenance categories. I knew you did not have "type" set because this template was showing up in them, but I did not notice it was mistyped. --Jarekt (talk) 11:26, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Zdjęcia z NAC a domena publiczna

Ethize (talk) 16:45, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

This is because I initially forgot to conceal the vehicle registration numbers (all the second uploads are OK). Thank you. Storye book (talk) 18:50, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
- Storye book, is it really necessary? I know Google Street View does it, but I did not think we do it on Commons. I have never done it with my images like this one. --Jarekt (talk) 19:03, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
- In this case, I had special permission to photograph the fine carving on the building, but the military have been in control of the site since 1913. And most of the vehicles are theirs. They are particularly sensitive about security right now - so I was very lucky to get that permission; it took a while. Like you, I have not bothered to conceal registration plates in any of my other uploads. However this particular case is a sensitive issue. Also I would like to be allowed back in to photograph the fourth statue on the roof (I only did three, oops). My fault for not thinking about this before I uploaded. Batch uploading
Do you still do scripts for batch uploads? There's a huge backlog and some requests date back to 2010 (and I think earlier) so I wouldn't want to ask you to prioritizse something, however if possible I would ask if you would script for 300 images of Vietnamese cash 💰 coins illustrated by Eduardo Toda y Güell. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 09:29, 17 November 2017 (UTC) Please see Commons:Batch uploading/Illustrations of Vietnamese cash coins from Ed Toda's "Annam and its minor currency".. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 09:30, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Szablon Wikidata person
--Jarekt (talk) 03:02, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

. This has now been fixed on all wikis. Old links will still work. [240] - A new tag marks edits where a redirect was created or removed. This still works when the editor writes something else in the edit summary. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. [241]
- If you use Chrome on Android, you can now use the print to PDF button to create a PDF of an article. [242]
- Filter by number of edits or filter by time range have been grouped on a same menu on the recent changes page if you use the new filters. The "View new changes since $1" link is now more prominent. [243]
- Some of the web fonts that were provided by the Universal Language Selector extension are being removed. This is to reduce the load time on pages. The web fonts were added many years ago to help users read text in scripts which did not have fonts or had broken fonts. This is not the case any more. Tracking missing artwork data and LUA plans
Hi Jarek, how are you doing? Still working on the Wikidata/Commons things? I updated the artwork template to add tracker categories like Category:Artworks with Wikidata item without creator. This will help making the data on Wikidata more complete. {{Creator}} is all LUA these days, what are your plans regarding {{Institution}} and {{Artwork}}? Would be great to have these switched to LUA too. Would also make it easier to just add all the tracker categories like you did for the creator templates. Multichill (talk) 14:00, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- I was hoping to do another round of improvements to {{Creator}}, but need a big block of time to debug as some of my "improvements" are not working right. Than I would like to tackle the other 2 templates, unless someone beats me to it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:44, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hope you find a big block of free time soon! ;-)
- I'll just continue with the bulk work. That has to be done anyway. Multichill (talk) 21:48, 17 December 2017 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 8 January 2018.
Problems
- When you import a page from another wiki the usernames of the users who edited the article on the wiki you imported it from are shown in the article history. This should link to the users on the original wiki. A script to fix this caused problems for Wikidata and German Wikipedia. It also created a large number of SUL accounts on wikis where editors had never edited. [245]
- Some bot owners got email about their bots logging in from a new computer. If this is from one or a couple of wikis, you can turn these messages off in your preferences on those wikis until the problem has been solved. If not, you can report more about the problem in Phabricator.
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 19 December at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Files on Commons will have structured metadata in the future. The developers are now looking for examples of different kinds of metadata to make sure they are aware of them when they build prototypes for structured data on Commons. You can read more and help by giving examples of interesting media files.
- The Structured Commons team are making sure Commons work with structured data. If you regularly contribute to Commons and Wikidata you can answer a survey that helps the team prioritise the tools that are important for the Commons and Wikidata communities. The survey ends on 22 December. You can read more on Commons. You can also help the team decide on better names for "captions" and "descriptions". This ends on 3 January 2018.
- The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey has now ended. You can see the results. They decide what the Community Tech team will work on next year.

Materials for Commons?
Can this pictures be uploaded on Commons regarding copyright?--Ma▀▄Ga 13:44, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
If they can be uploaded, can it be done and cropped with someone's bot?--Ma▀▄Ga 13:45, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
- The artwork is by "Leopold Gedö" (1887-1952) [246] so it will be out of copyright in 5 years. It was published in 1926 so no {{PD-1923}}. --Jarekt (talk) 20:55, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. Merry Christmas!--Ma▀▄Ga 06:31, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
Archdeacon Barakatullah
Can i upload this image. Is this copyright?---- see Barkatullah (archdeacon)--Bukhari Talk 17:08, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- I doubt it. I assume the photograph was taken in 1950's or 1960's, so the photographer is not dead for more than 70 years. Maybe some country of origin specific laws would apply (?) --Jarekt (talk) 17:20, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- Ok :( --Bukhari Talk 17:26, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
Additional licence?
File:Njemačka ulica i Vinkovačka Gimnazija.jpg
You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. What should be propriate for this?--Ma▀▄Ga 09:57, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
I would also like to transfer three pictures from hr.wp (first, second and third). What licence would be correct?--Ma▀▄Ga 15:51, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
- User:MaGa iwas often confused about what to do with that requirement especially for images like Mona Lisa etc. We know it is in PD in US but we have no license that covers that case. Commons:Hirtle chart divides works into Published and unpublished but what does itmean in case of old paintings. Luckily in case of postcards printed before 1923 the case is easier: just use {{PD-1923}} license or it's variants like {{PD-anon-1923}}. --Jarekt (talk) 03:41, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
PD-1923 license
Hello Jarekt, regarding this, I was on the (apparently wrong) belief that that tag applied to all copyrights expired before 1923. Do you know what would be the template for a PD-1923 work published by the Brazilian government back in 1824? I couldn't find it easily.-- Darwin Ahoy! 12:44, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) The template that applied to all copyrights expired before 1923 is {{PD-1923}} with the text in template:PD-1923-text. I reverted the edits to template:PD-old-text, which is not related. For Brazilian governement images from 1824 images I would use Template:PD-BrazilGov + {{PD-1923}}. Or just {{PD-old-100-1923}}. --Jarekt (talk) 12:56, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks!! {{PD-old-100-1923}} is really what I was looking for, in that case. I apologize for messing up with that license, I'm glad you noticed that so quickly. :) -- Darwin Ahoy! 13:05, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
On that case, I believe {{PD-BrazilGov}} probably applies. I know I have questions about that PD-1923 tag, but for now I can't recall any of them. Eventually I'll came here again for advice when I face some dubious situation. Thanks for the revert, BTW.-- Darwin Ahoy! 12:51, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi again Jarekt. I'm facing a case where the license should be {{PD-old-90-1923}}, as the author is not stated, but it is irrelevant if the work is anonymous or not, and it was published in 1920. However, that license was deleted in 2015 for being redundant with {{PD-old-auto-1923}} - something which, as you said, is not true, as {{PD-old-auto-1923}} is not to be used in those situations. I restored the license and its corresponding category PD-old-90-1923, but it has a warning there saying that {{PD-old-auto-1923}} should be used instead, in order to automatically update the license - which is a point, and was the initial motivation for the edit I've made on {{PD-old-auto-1923}} - to make it comply, precisely, with such a requirement. What should be done in this case? Ignore the warning? Remove the warning? Duplicate {{PD-old-auto-1923}} into yet another license, so that it can cover those situations?-- Darwin Ahoy! 01:59, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Why not use {{PD-old-100-1923}} or {{PD-anon-1923}}?. I do not like resurrecting {{PD-old-90-1923}}, if you know someone date of death than use {{PD-old-auto-1923}} if you do not than do not use PD-old templates. {{PD-old-90-1923}} and other such templates was retired because files using it were would require to be updated to {{PD-old-100-1923}} after a decade. {{PD-old-auto-1923}} is better because it does it automatically. --Jarekt (talk) 04:20, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- I can't use {{PD-old-100-1923}}, because it is not PD-old-100, and I can't use {{PD-anon-1923}}, because those are not anonymous works, though they are undoubtedly public domain. There is no other option, either we use {{PD-old-90-1923}}, or we change {{PD-old-auto-1923}} to allow for those cases (which was my original idea).-- Darwin Ahoy! 13:56, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Darwin, It might be the best if we start new discussion to Commons:Village pump/Copyright, so others with even more experience in licensing can participate. Could you point to an image, explain the copyright situation and we can figure out if we can meet those needs with existing templates or we need a new one. --Jarekt (talk) 14:03, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- File:Mapa histórico do Brasil - folha Purus.tif is an obvious situation. All photographs from Brazil with no stated author (or with stated author that we don't know the death year) taken between 1917 and 1922 also fall in such category, independently of being anonymous or not. {{PD-old-90-1923}} solves it for now, so I'll leave that discussion to another time in the future, unless someone else starts it.-- Darwin Ahoy! 14:10, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Darwin, I do not think {{PD-old-90-1923}} is the right fit. If the work was created in 1922 and author was 20 years old at the time of the creation, and lived to the age of 80, than he would have died around year 2000. I do not know why do you claim he had to die in 1920's. I do not see any info in the file suggesting that. --Jarekt (talk) 14:24, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- It's not a single author, it's a collective work comissioned by an organization, so what counts is the date the work was completed (or published, in case of an editor), according to the 1916 Brazilian law code that rules over those matters. In the case of photographs, the ones from that period should always be public domain in Brazil, independently of being authored or not. {{PD-old-100-1923}} is being used for those situations, and {{PD-old-90-1923}} says pretty much the same, only changing the period to 90, so if there is some problem with that, it goes much, much deeper than the mere use of {{PD-old-90-1923}} on those situations, which is basically the same as using the generic {{PD-old-100-1923}}, only changing the period.-- Darwin Ahoy! 14:43, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Darwin, If you do not know that author died more than 90 years ago than you should not use PD-old-90 template. In case of File:Mapa histórico do Brasil - folha Purus.tif, you need to use Brazil specific template, and {{PD-BR-1937}}, {{PD-Brazil-URAA}} and {{PD-BR-URAAanon}} all seem to apply to it. Why not use one of the templates made for such cases? --Jarekt (talk) 15:55, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Because it's a PD-1923 case, and those should be kept apart from the URAA situations. And it's not only about Brazil, Portugal (and other countries) has the same disposition relating to collective works.-- Darwin Ahoy! 16:12, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Darwin, If other countries have the same laws than we need to use templates that are specific to those countries. If we do not have such templates than we should create them. As for , PD-1923 vs. URAA laws in US. I would just add {{PD-1923}} license to the file in addition to {{PD-BR-1937}}, as the file meets conditions of both laws. --Jarekt (talk) 16:28, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- I'm thinking if the correct thing to do wouldn't be to duplicate {{PD-old-auto-1923}} in a new tag in order to cover {{PD-anon-1923}} and all those cases where there is a certain date, and "this date has an equivalent effect on copyright expiration" to the author's death date. I don't believe URAA tags should be used for cases which are clearly PD-1923, as those are.-- Darwin Ahoy! 16:24, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- If file meets requirements of {{PD-1923}} and {{PD-1996}} than it often has both licenses. See for example, File:IgnacyJanPaderewski.jpg, which has {{PD-Polish}} (which covers {{PD-1996}}) and {{PD-1923}}. Than you just add both licenses. --Jarekt (talk) 16:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Because it's a PD-1923 case, and those should be kept apart from the URAA situations. And it's not only about Brazil, Portugal (and other countries) has the same disposition relating to collective works.-- Darwin Ahoy! 16:12, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

I don't see why we can't use a shortcut to cover those situations, as was done with {{PD-old-auto-1923}}, as they are exactly the same under PD-1923 and local country law, as are the cases where the author is known. I don't see the benefit of cluttering the URAA categories, which are always subject of close scrutiny, with obviously cleared PD-1923 material. Cases as the 1891 Constitution of Brazil should be also covered by such a tag, as they are not public domain because someone died, but for a completely different disposition on the law.-- Darwin Ahoy! 16:46, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi Jarekt. I'll probably propose this (or ask for some suggestions on how to deal with those cases) at VPC at some point in the future, but I can't promise when. If you want this to go faster, please open the issue there, and ping me, and I'll follow suit and join. Cheers,-- Darwin Ahoy! 14:43, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
- Darwin I do not have any questions for Commons:Village pump/Copyright at the moment. In case of your file I would just use Brazilian template + {{PD-1923}}, the way we deal with other similar files. Creating more ways of doing the same thing just creates confusion, because others are trying to figure out why two similar files are treated differently. But if you disagree, please check at Commons:Village pump/Copyright how others feel about it before you create any new license template. --Jarekt (talk) 03:12, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
- As far as I know, there is no Brazilian template covering those old government files, nor there should be any need for it, as it's always PD-1923. Yes, I believe either {{PD-old-auto-1923}} should be changed in order to cover those situations, or a new similar template should be created to deal with everything that is PD-1923, but not related to anyone's death. I'll bring that to VPC, eventually, in the future.-- Darwin Ahoy! 03:25, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
