Interiors

Hi Smuconlaw! You do accept that the word "interior" has also plural (Interiors of castles in Slovenia etc.). A simple building has its interior. However, an object which has not only more separate rooms but even more buildings (e. g. some castles, châteaux, airports...) can have also more interiors than just one, cann't it? It seems a bit rash to me, to move all such categories to singular. --ŠJů (talk) 17:00, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

I copied your posting to "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/talk#Interiors" and responded there. — SMUconlaw (talk) 19:48, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Commons delinker

Please note that I sometimes hesitate to execute a move request because I am hoping to find the time to complete it with move requests on the same theme, such as Paintings, sculptures, frescoes, drawings, music of the Last Supper. To me, this type of (vertical ?) coherence is the most important one, although I can understand that the topical (horizontal?) coherence is the most obvious one to work with. --Foroa (talk) 14:49, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

OK, let me know if you wish me to remove certain requests for now. I have looked at the categories relating to Jesus Christ and see that they will need a bit of work, so I'll be working on them. — SMUconlaw (talk) 14:53, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Jezus ! That means a lot of work;) --Foroa (talk) 14:58, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Guess I'll have to do it bit by bit. It's a big mess. For example, there's a totally unnecessary branch called "Jesus Christ in art". All works of Jesus Christ will be forms of art, since no one had any cameras when he was alive! — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:01, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Not sure, bibles and theological works, things, organisations and people devoted to ... are not necessarily art.
Good point. I'll bear that in mind. That means all the art-related stuff should be moved into "Jesus Christ in art". — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Note that I often use Catscan to create category lists, paste ASCII in Excel. This morning, I needed only a good half hour to create the 150 moves (out of a lists of 350) from "xxx in Cordoba" to "xxx in Cordoba, Spain". --Foroa (talk) 15:09, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Hmmm, I think I will have to try out Catscan. — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Bridge

Hi Smuconlaw. Are you from Singapore? Can you find the name of Bridge near Merlion.JPG? I forgot the name. It was near the Merlion Park, near the Cavenagh Bridge. Can you find it and then rename it? Thank you! SpartacksCompatriot (talk) 00:21, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, I'm from Singapore. It's Anderson Bridge. I've renamed it. — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:47, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! SpartacksCompatriot (talk) 03:16, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
You're most welcome. — SMUconlaw (talk) 10:28, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

move cat

Hallo Smuconlaw, I requested a rename for category lapidary 26.3. which you moved. Is it still working?

Regards ––Oursana (talk) 09:06, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Should be. Foroa is probably working on the renaming. Check with him if you are not sure. — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:08, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Mass deletion

Hi Smuconlaw, I just want to clarify with you that all those images you're requesting for deletion were uploaded by me from a very big photo stream on Flickr (~1600 pics) and I couldn't check them all. I support every deletion request for this reason. Bye --Viscontino (talk) 12:19, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I realized that. They're all listed for renaming and there are a large number of them, so I thought I'd just clear out some problematic ones. Wow, the photographer really likes cats and flowers. — SMUconlaw (talk) 12:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

re: File:Referendum campaign and Singapore referendum 1962.PNG

Hi Smuconlaw, I got from Singapore: A 700-Year History - National Archives of Singapore of The National Referendum, 1 September 1962 at the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) Collection, how can be a copyright violation? thank you Omdo (talk) 10:41, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the publication of the image in a book or its appearance on the website of the National Archives does not have an effect on the status of the copyright in the image. (The NAS presumably obtained permission from the Government to use the image on its website.) The image is still copyrighted because a work of the Singapore Government is copyrighted for 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the work was made: see "Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Government works 3". Since this work was published in 1962, it will only enter the public domain on 1 January 2033. — SMUconlaw (talk) 13:39, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Smuconlaw, did you consider, that ...- Interior is more helpful to find categories with cat-a-lot?. I just renamed Category:House of Giorgio Vasari (Arezzo) with the help of Foroa to Category:Casa Vasari (Arezzo) - Exterior ??Greetings ––Oursana (talk) 01:27, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

I wanted to standardize the naming of subcategories to "Church interiors", "Cinema interiors" and so on, but Foroa said that the standard form was "Interiors of ...". That's why I have been steadily nominating such subcategories for renaming into the format "Interiors of ...". Maybe you should ask Foroa about this. (If you feel this should be discussed further, I suggest we move the conversation to "User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/talk".) — SMUconlaw (talk) 07:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:Jesus Christ Bearing the Cross

Hi Smuconlaw, You just renamed this template from Template:Christ Carrying the Cross to Template:Jesus Christ Bearing the Cross. What is this new title based on? Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 16:36, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

The parent category has been renamed to "Category:Jesus Christ bearing the Cross", so I renamed the template to bring it in line with the parent category. — SMUconlaw (talk) 16:53, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
I see. The thing is, when you click on WhatLinksHere you'll see that this type of image is usually called "Christ Carrying the Cross". So I think the category name is fine, but I don't think we should be renaming existing titles. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 17:11, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I agree that renaming filenames isn't necessary because different paintings, sculptures, etc., are likely to have different names. However, I am in the process of standardizing the names of categories of art relating to Jesus Christ, hence the renaming of the category. — SMUconlaw (talk) 18:17, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
No, I am not talking about filenames or category names, but of Template:Jesus Christ Bearing the Cross. This template is used in the title-field of Template:Artwork. As far as I know "Christ Carrying the Cross" is the most commonly used title. Even wikipedia uses it. I'm not asking to rename the template, just that the english translation be restored to the old title. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 19:30, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Sure, change the English translation back if you wish to. — SMUconlaw (talk) 21:20, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
cheers, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 07:01, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Manuscript miniature : not a drawing

Hello. I see that you categorize systematicaly medieval miniatures inside drawing categories. You can't say that a medieval miniature is a drawing... but it is not a painting neither... (In fact, in museums, miniatures are classified into graphical arts like drawings but all graphical arts are not drawings). The better is, if you really want to categorize it, to create a specific category like this one. Thanks. Mel22 (talk) 20:06, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Aren't miniatures painted? "en:Miniature (illuminated manuscript)" seems to confirm this. If not, then how are they created? — SMUconlaw (talk) 21:24, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Good point, you recognized they are not drawings ! As I said just above, in Museum collections, miniatures are never classified into paintings but into Graphical arts. That's why it seems logical to classify them into a distinct category. You create 2 categories (drawing & painting), it's not very hard to create a third one when there are enough images ? ;) Thanks a lot ! Mel22 (talk) 19:31, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Of course a separate category that is not a subcategory of "paintings" can be created, but is it correct to do so? You haven't answered my question about why you don't consider miniatures to be paintings. As I mentioned, it seems that miniatures are created by being painted, so it is correct that they should be a subcategory of "paintings". — SMUconlaw (talk) 02:42, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Your superb picture

Ed, the editor in chief of the Signpost, is using your staircase pic in this week's edition. Let me say that the composition and human interest, plus the sense of movement, are just excellent. Tony (talk) 08:46, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

sky 100 stuff

Hi,sorry for the brief message but I had this discussion with user:waldir already. I reverted, because the Wikimania party is of no relevance to those shots. --Dschwen (talk) 18:38, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, what do you mean? — SMUconlaw (talk) 03:37, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
This categorization. --Dschwen (talk) 05:34, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
In that case, shouldn't other photographs in "Views from Sky100 at Wikimania 2013 welcome party" which don't show the party itself also be moved to "Views from Sky100"? — SMUconlaw (talk) 02:16, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
that would be consistent. Last time I checked there was only one or two. --Dschwen (talk) 02:34, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I just checked and most of the ones which were just views without people at the party had been moved. There was one more which I moved a few minutes ago. Thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 14:09, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I would like to inform you that I have granted you editor flag at the Arabic Wikipedia, all your edits there will be automatically marked as patrolled. Best regards.--Avocato (talk) 07:29, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, this photo is a derivative work. The exhibited and displayed original works need credits (author, licences, and titles if given at the description pages). Please add these credits to avoid a deletion request. Thank you. --Martina talk 18:04, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

I thought the images were small enough to be de minimis, but in any case I note that another dedicated editor has added links to the visible photographs. — SMUconlaw (talk) 05:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
I added authors and licenses as well. Commons:De minimis does not apply as the exihibted works are in focus. --Martina talk 04:44, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Renaming categories at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands

Thanks for your efforts in reducing the workload at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. However, when you change category names, can you please go through this checklist to make sure everything goes through smoothly? I'd like for you to, in the future, attribute the authors from the previous category name, as well as create an associated Wikidata item for the new category name. Someday, I hope to publish that page as an official guideline, to be integrated with Commons:Rename a category, but for now I think it's a good guideline for everyone to follow, even if it is in my userspace. Anyway, thanks again for your hardwork! Cheers, TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 21:09, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll have a look at the page you directed me to. Thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 15:44, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Photographs of paintings

Please consider using Template:Licensed-PD-Art. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:21, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Mmmm, OK. How does it differ from {{PD-Art}}? — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:23, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Some places in the world don't recognize PD-art. Licensed PD-art just means that the photographer or scanner has released the image as free, so no one has to worry about the copyrights in those countries beyond the standard license stipulations. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:37, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks. — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:58, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Drexel 4041

Hi - I see you removed the category "New York Public Library manuscripts" from the images of Drexel 4041. Unless you plan to eliminate this category, what is your rationale? -- Kosboot (talk) 14:03, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

I put the images into a new category called "Category:Drexel 4041", which is a subcategory of "Category:New York Public Library manuscripts". — SMUconlaw (talk) 00:25, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

Redirect

Please do not tag redirects as {{Speedy}}. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. --Steinsplitter (talk) 22:09, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

In this particular case, I'm quite sure there is no project using the old filename because I renamed the original file, then shortly thereafter realized there was a spelling mistake (statue was spelled as statute), and so I renamed it again. The intermediate redirect is therefore redundant. — SMUconlaw (talk) 22:11, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
You can't check if a external project is using it, See also Template:FilemoverWelcome. --Steinsplitter (talk) 22:12, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
I made the original move at 04:30 (UTC) and then noticed the spelling error and moved it a second time at 04:31. I honestly doubt if any external project would have used it in that minute that it took to move the file, but I'm not going to argue over this. — SMUconlaw (talk) 22:19, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Ohh... Sorry. Not noticed. Deleted :) --Steinsplitter (talk) 22:24, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Congratulations, Dear license reviewer

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Smuconlaw, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! 1989 11:57, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Lisbon trams vs. Trams in Lisbon

About this category renaming, where it says that «Smuconlaw moved page Category:Sounds of Lisbon trams to Category:Sounds of trams in Lisbon: To match sister categories». You seem to refer to categories which are worded "Trams in Whatevertown", instead of "Whatevertown trams", but I have yet to see a discussion about the relative merits of these two approaches. Please note that this category you renamed has a vast number of kin categories worded as "Something about Lisbon trams", while actual sister categories named like you prefer — "Sounds of trams in Whatevertown" indeed do not exist. Under Category:Sounds of trams, only Lisbon files are subcategorized, while under Category:Lisbon trams by media, there were 6 (now 5), among 7, categories worded "Lisbon trams" against a single one (now two) worded "Trams in Lisbon".

I am not discussing here now which wording is better for these category names, but I have to ask you that in the future you justify your moves on your personal preference, instead of claiming to adhere to a majority or consensus that does not exist.

Also, please note that, among our many categories pertaining to trams, those covering the Lisbon system are uniquely able to both offer a very detailed clustering of many variables into separate parallel subtrees, as well as cover a very large body of media items. If anything, other systems’ categorization should mirror Lisbon (as done for, e.g., Århus, and Sóller-Port), instead of degrading this uniquely functional system by applying the brownian tendences in use elsewhere.

-- Tuválkin 21:36, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

What I meant was that a majority of categories – and, in particular, transport-related categories – use the format "[type of vehicle] in/of [place]". See, for example, the subcategories of "Category:Aircraft by country", "Category:Automobiles by country", "Category:Ships by country of location" and, in fact, "Category:Trams by country". I'm not sure why Lisbon trams should be an exception to this rule, unless "Lisbon Trams" is the official name of the tram service (which it doesn't appear to be). — SMUconlaw (talk) 22:16, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

by country categories

Hello, when you create new "by country" categories, can you use {{by country category|subject}} please? see [1] for example. Holger1959 (talk) 23:30, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

@Holger1959: What does that template do? — SMUconlaw (talk) 09:57, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
it adds the multilingual text box (helpful for users so they know what not to do), and it is useful for maintenance/tracking all by country categories, it also autocategorizes in Category:Categories by country (flat list) and in the subject main category (if you don't want the latter there's Template:MetaCat as alternative).
