Toisessa Wikimedia-projektissa vilpittömässä tarkoituksessa käytössä oleva tiedosto tulkitaan automaattisesti opetukselliseksi. Myös käyttö teknillisestä syystä esimerkiksi mallineessa riittää. Mikäli tiedostoa käytetään vain käyttäjäsivuilla, sitä ei vielä lasketa opetukselliseksi. De facto on kuitenkin sallittua tallentaa Commonsiin vähäinen määrä tiedostoja omilla käyttäjäsivuilla käytettäväksi.
