The image [[:File:Zwikmachine_1885.jpg]] is used in 7 places on the various wikipedias. It's a low-resolution 316x500 jpeg-encoded image of the first page of an 1883 U.S. patent. I would like to replace it with the full-resolution 2320x3408 official bilevel scan of the page by the patent office. The jpeg format is unsuitable for a bilevel image. I've created a png file (which losslessly fits all 7.9 megapixels into 114 kbytes). Now what? I'd like to just use the "Upload a new version of this file" button, but it seems that's not possible because the format doesn't match the file name (should the encoding really be part of the filename?). I guess I need to create a whole new upload, and then go to all 7 places the jpeg is used and manually change them to the png? (I tried but failed to find an entry about this in the faqs.) HI! I am glad to be back from a one month suspension.
I would like to upload an illustration I created for writers' to use. For example, an author is putting out a book soon" Perception In Art" and used one of my prior uploads. Is this o.k. ? Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)

Can not upload new version of image. Weird repeating problem

Jmabel and others. I am having the same problem with another image. Please see:

I am unable to upload a new version of this image used in articles worldwide:

New version can be downloaded from here:

When I try to upload the new version the upload form switches to the new uploads version of the upload form. In red it says "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding." I am not trying to upload and create a new image file. So I bail out. It happens every time I click on the upload link: "Upload a new version of this file". I browse to image. I enter file changes: "Latest from source". Then I click "Upload file".

I have been able to upload new versions of other images the last few days. So I don't know why this image upload is not working.

Can someone else upload the new version for me? --Timeshifter (talk) 22:49, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Jmabel. I get no option to ignore warnings. I have seen that option on many images. But not in this case. When I click the upload button it immediately gives me the upload page for completely new images. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:57, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: I've occasionally seen something like this recently, where when I try to overwrite a file I briefly see the warning page and then get bounced to a blank upload form. I think when I've seen that I've worked around it by going back to the upload form and choosing "Ignore any warnings". When it next happens I'll try to remember to look into it in more detail. --bjh21 (talk) 13:09, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bjh21 and Jmabel. I tried starting over and still ended up with the blank upload form for new images. Not the form for overwriting images. There was no option for "Ignore any warnings". It just wasn't that upload form. It was the same for the previous image I reported on (see other thread I linked to). So I know it wasn't a mistake on my part.
If it happens again I will report it here. Maybe others have the problem too, and will start reporting it. It is an infrequent problem. I can go for months without having the need to overwrite an image. And it doesn't happen with all images I need to overwrite. Not at all.
Bjh21. If the warning page is showing up first, it is happening so fast that I am not seeing it. I will try the back button next time, and see if that brings me to the warning page. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:29, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: Now that I'm paying attention, I've noticed that every time I go to Special:Upload, I get redirected to the same URL with uploadformstyle=plain added. And if I turn off the "ImprovedUploadForm" gadget this stops happening. And looking through Help:Gadget-ImprovedUploadForm, I find “If an error occurs after it has already begun changing the form, the script forces an automatic reload of the upload form, with enhancements disabled (i.e., with this uploadformstyle=plain parameter added).” I suspect that something is causing that gadget to encounter an error every time, which is causing the spurious reloads (and data loss when overiting the file). Any JavaScript wizards around who can take a look? --bjh21 (talk) 18:43, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

((outdent}} Thanks Bjh21. I disabled the gadget. Hopefully, that solves the problem. I may not know though for awhile since it can be months between overwrites. And not all were a problem in the past. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:03, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking into this, glad I found this discussion. The "Upload a new version of this file" link still seems to take me to the same form with the same errors as others described above. After clicking the upload file button, the page reloads and halfway down the page a red error message comes up about needing to add description information. I tried the ignore warnings box and that doesn't help either. I'm uploading a higher resolution image of this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heliothis_celeris.JPG Nathank2 (talk) 15:23, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nathank2. Is that higher resolution image on the web? Do you have a link to the new version of the image you want to upload? I, or others who read this can try to upload it over the old image. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:12, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded the new image to it's own link at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Heliolonche_celeris.png, but if someone can overwrite the old image, please delete my new image link. Thanks for your help Nathank2 (talk) 20:19, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Different file types. You can't overwrite a JPG with a PNG. - Jmabel ! talk 21:20, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, that worked, Thanks! I went back and couldn't find anything mentioning that the file formats must be the same? Perhaps a tip at the "source file" spot on the upload page would help? Thanks again Nathank2 (talk) 23:20, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nathank2. I tried uploading that PNG image over the JPG image and got this warning:
"Upload warning. File extension ".JPG" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png)."
Try it again yourself with the PNG image, and tell us if you get that warning, or whether you get sent to the new uploads form. I am curious to see which form shows up now for you. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:34, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I got the "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice. Thank you for your understanding" warning again, not the MIME warning. Weird. Nathank2 (talk) 13:07, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

License

How can I know if my uploaded work is licensed The Curious Traveler (talk) 19:03, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@The Curious Traveler: I'm not certain I understand your question, so the following may or may not answer it:
  • I assume by "work" we are talking about photos.
  • If you took the photo, and it is not derivative of someone else's copyrighted work, you can license it as you wish. The most common license here is {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}.
  • If you did not take the photo, then you should only be uploading it to Commons if you know its copyright and licensing status. Probably only about 2 or 3% or what you will find in the Internet is in the public domain and another 2 or 3% is free-licensed. So if you don't already know the copyright and licensing status, it is very probable that your upload constitutes a copyright violation. Which is to say, if you don't understand copyright and licensing, please don't upload anything other than photos you took yourself.
If you have a specific question about the copyright status of something in particular, feel free to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 01:20, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Curious Traveler: Are you asking about this image File:Lost cloud.jpg you uploaded? If so, exactly what is it you want to know? You uploaded it under the "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International" licence. Ww2censor (talk) 08:03, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Shalmuse43: That would be User talk:World Imaging. But normally you don't need to contact anyone to use images on Commons. See Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. - Jmabel ! talk 02:42, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I understand I don't have to, but the user has suggested doing it (and I'd like to ask if they have any other information available about the object photographed). But I don't see anywhere to type in a comment or response on that page. Shalmuse43 Shalmuse43 (talk) 02:50, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You would click the "Add Topic" tab up on the top right side. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like this user is active anymore; their last edit was 12 years ago, and sure enough, there are a large number of unanswered requests like yours on their user talk page. Photograph upload

How can I change the description (text) of the picture (photo) in JPG ? Tarjakaarina (talk) 08:49, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Tarjakaarina: Since you don't say what photo, and what exactly you want to change, it's hard to give you a specific answer, but if you mean the "description" field of the {{Information}} template, unless the particular page is protected, that is completely editable, and can be edited just like anything else in the wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What did you use as a title? Andy Dingley (talk) 14:51, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your first 16 encounters with filters were with the pdf files filter, when you tried to upload pdf files. The 17th encounter was with the cross-wiki upload filter, when you tried to upload File:Madansingh chowk Adipur.jpg to Commons while you were en.wikipedia. If the question is about that last one, you can try to upload the file when you are on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:54, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page Name

Good Day/Night Sir, Im ibrahim Al-Sharqawi I want to change this page [1] name To (Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984)2) and thank you very much. Ibrahim alsharqawi124 (talk) 22:31, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ibrahim alsharqawi124: Normally, the right way to do this is to use {{Rename}} on the page in question. I've moved it to File:Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984).png (can't imagine there was a good reason to add "2" on the end), but this seems a bit of a mess, and I'd like you to sort out a few things.
  • You indicate https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Anwar_Sadat-Egyptian_Parliament-1977_%2804%29.png as a source, but it's hard to see how that can be a source. It would certainly seem that your source is File:Coat of arms of Egypt (1972–1984).svg which you also link. Is the latter correct (that is, is it the actual source)?
  • You claim to have a copyright on this which you are releasing into the public domain. What is the creative work you have done that would give you a copyright here?
  • The image is uncategorized. Please add categories.
  • I'm not at all sure why you'd make a PNG based on an SVG when an SVG is the preferred format for this sort of thing, but I suppose this is your prerogative. Still, for the future: this seems an odd thing to do. Similarly, you have a template about "This vector image..." but a PNG is precisely NOT a vector image, which is why SVG is preferred.
Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the user here uploaded the PNG because the text in the SVG is an auto-traced mess. They probably extracted and manipulated the text from that photo, then inserted it into the SVG, and rendered that. As such, the user might have some kind of copyright in that work depending on jurisdiction, which they have evidentially released into the public domain. Ideally, the text on the SVG would be cleaned up, but curved text in SVGs isn't always easy to get working properly. Eiim (talk) 22:32, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ho do you move multiple files to the same category?

Every time I move or add multiple files in the same category, I usually need to go to each file's page and paste the same category name in the category section using HotCat. Is there a simple or faster way to do this? Is it possible to select multiple files and move them into the same category? User3204 03:10, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@User3204: try Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot, see your preferences -> Gadgets, Tools for categories. MKFI (talk) 06:39, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if either (1) they are among the recent uploads of one user, (2) they already have a category in common, or (3) you are finding them with a search, VisualFileChange can be very useful. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus

@Tullius Detritus uploaded a number of generated images, among these the files in Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus. I questioned this on the user's talk page and soon after @Trade created a DR. Now another DR was created for Commons:Deletion requests/File:Stable Diffusion - In Ancient Rome - 5.jpg. I think all the files in "Category:Stable Diffusion works by Tullius Detritus" need to be treated consistently, as other uploads like the DesignerMadson uploads by Tullius Detritus. IMHO this does not need to be a deletion, it can be a clarification as described by me on the user's talk page. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 21:54, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correction of an Omission on Music Notes

In attempting to find the author of the 1960's song "Get Together," I noticed an omission on your site that I would like to correct. I found the page labeled "Get Together (Youngbloods song)." In the section on "Cover Versions," I noticed one version missing -- The Mitchell Trio also covered this song on its Mercury album titled, "That's the Way It's Gonna Be" (SG61049) released in August of 1965. It is a more upbeat/energetic version than the Youngbloods take. It is also the first album released after John Denver replaced Chad Mitchell in the group. Style question

Hello!

I am currently trying to pimp up my userpage, and so far it's pretty good. However, I have a few problems:

  1. How do I change the link colors? They don't contrast well.
  2. How do I change the style for the headings? !important does absolutely nothing. I just made headings with spans for now. Figured it out. It's not a very pretty solution.
  3. How do I change to the default background on my Babel shell
  4. How do I make the Babel shell float on the right with the Minerva Neue skin?
  5. How do I change the color of bullet points?

Thanks in advance, --QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 03:25, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's the proper way to upload a remix of a photo under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence on here?

Sorry if this is answered somewhere but everything I found was about how you can't use things that are copyrighted, not about how you properly use things published here under a Creative Commons licence.

I found a photo here and used it as a reference to create a vector drawing of my own. The photo is published here under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, which matches the default licence I see when I go to the uploads section. But then I get confused.

1. Under the "Release rights" section, there are two options: "This file is my own work." or "This file is not my own work." This is a really confusing binary when I think my work clearly falls under the licence's remix category. It is my own work but it's heavily based on the proportions of patterns captured in the photo, even though I added my own designs, so I want to credit the photo.

2. It seems like I should say "This file is not my own work." because then I get options to link to the original and credit the person.

3. That is ok until I get to the "Describe" section where at the bottom it says "By clicking "publish", you agree to the terms of use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons CC0 License." This is concerning because according to the CC BY-SA 4.0 "you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original." However Wikimedia Commons seems to be forcing me to publish it under a looser public domain licence with zero restrictions.

4. This might suggest I should say "This file is my own work." and then select to publish under the CC BY-SA 4.0. But then when I get to the "Describe" section I see the same note about agreeing to publish under the Creative Commons CC0 License, as if I never made any selection before.

Feel like I'm stuck in an impossible loop just trying to do what I'm supposed to do. What is that exactly? Sharonlamsy (talk) 04:04, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Sharonlamsy: From what you say, your drawing is your own work, although it is derived in part from the photo. The situation is basically what you describe above in your point "1". It sounds like the work may be uploaded through the "own work" path of the upload form you are using. If you selected CC BY-SA 4.0 for your image, then that is the license of your image. I don't know what that is about a CC0 message (I don't use that labyrinthine form for my uploads), but I suppose that the CC0 message may be about the licensing for the descriptive structured data that you may add at some step, not the licensing of your drawing. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:40, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the CCO message only refers to the structured data description of the file and not to the file itself. For remixes with many source files and authors there is no good way to add the information in the UploadWizard form. If you do not want to use an other upload way I would suggest to upload as you own work and to add the other authors and the sources after you uploaded the file. Here is an example how a page with many sources and authors could look like File:WLE Germany banner 2023.jpg. GPSLeo (talk) 15:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sharonlamsy: the upload wizard is good for commons situations, and barely usable for uncommon situations. My bet suggestion to those who use that method of uploading and want to do something complicated is to try to get close to what you want, then as soon as you've uploaded get in there by hand and edit the file page to fix what is wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 17:02, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is Category:Trevi Moran and it contains a number of photos of a man by the name of Trevor Moran and a number of photos of a woman by the name of Trevi Moran. It does not look like there is a single photo of a third person by the name of "Trevi Moran" that could be updated.

Midjourney

Trying to figure out whether or not I can upload images I've created through a Pro Midjourney account. I know that site says we're free to use these images as we wish/commercially. But I'm looking to host them here for a project I'm working on; I'm also not sure if it has to be marked as "public domain" or I can choose another CC license. Sorry this has undoubtedly been asked and answered before; any help appreciated. GH Images (talk) 14:53, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I need to ask what is the project you are working on? Trade (talk) 18:37, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've been tasked with finding public domain photos that when put together will illustrate a series of fictitious life stories set across various time periods, eg. a man who was a circus performer in the 1870s, a female secretary in the 1940s, etc. It seems kind of impossible to me, to get photos that might feasibly represent these things! At least, very time consuming. So I figured (hoped) that creating AI images based on those prompts might be a better way to go. Doesn't matter to me if they're public domain and anyone can use them for their own purposes. GH Images (talk) 18:53, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Files using template getting automatically included in the category to which the template belongs

Hello. I created "Template:Map-from-year-dont-overwrite", and used it in some files. Now, I find out that those files are shown as belonging to "Category:Dont overwrite-file templates", same category to which my new template belongs. It isn't happening with other templates belonging to the same category. Also, the category clearly states " It should not contain media files or pages outside the template namespace.", so it embarrases me. Can someone provide any help? MGeog2022 (talk) 20:30, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update: when loading this link while logged out, I don't see any files, so it's OK. When I'm logged in, I still see them, so I suspect it's some kind of caching issue (it's not the first time I experience them on Commons). At the images pages, such as this, I see that "Dont overwrite-file templates" is always shown as a hidden category (both while logged in, and while logged out). This is not a serious problem though, since the category that must not contain media files, wouldn't contain them, if what I see when logged out is right. I appreciate any kind of help, in any case. Thank you. ~~~~ MGeog2022 (talk) 20:46, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If someone has given me permission to use an image - how do I explain that to the satisfaction of the copyright robot.? In other words - what kind of copyright symbol do I use - because the robot insists on seeing one. It will not accept the words "Joe has given me permission to use this image" Charles.bowyer (talk) 21:52, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles.bowyer: sadly, "has given me permission" doesn't work in a community like this where people mostly don't know each other, or every plagiarist out there could just claim, "It's OK, I have permission." Further, we need a specific license from the copyright-holder and just "you've got permission" is rather vague (and almost never amounts to informed consent of licensing terms). So basically one of two thing needs to happen:
  1. If the image is already online (or can be placed online) on a publicly visible site or page obviously under control of the copyright-holder (e.g. their own web domain, or a public post on their Facebook page or Flickr stream), they can clearly state there what license they are offering and then anyone can upload here citing that as a source.
  2. Otherwise, there is a process laid out at COM:VRT for the copyright-holder to send an email granting an appropriate license. Note that the email in question must come from the copyright-holder, not from you, e.g. no forwarding of emails (though very occasionally a copyright-holder prefers actual writing on paper, in which case a photo of the document will do).
I know this is a bit of a stumbling block, but I presume that if you think about it you can see the necessity. - Jmabel ! talk 22:07, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - that clears it up. Charles.bowyer (talk) 21:35, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Get the other person to post the photo online with a text underneath stating that the photo is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Then you can upload the photo to Commons under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, using the link as evidence Trade (talk) 22:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is the first of the two alternatives I mentioned, but only works if they have an identifiable web presence. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help with fair use of 1970s newspaper clippings

Hello, I'm working on a page with things that happened back in the 1970s. The page was rejected a few times because "not notable enough" because I didn't have enough newspaper items, but those things are not online. The newspaper archives were accessible for a short time, but then they were removed, so all the effort I put into fining them was lost. But I do have images of the newspaper clippings, so I want to upload them to prove those things happened and they were covered by local media. The subject of the page died a few years ago and I want to wrap up the story and try to get it published.

Also, I understand some previous concerns about parts of it looking "promotional" so I worked on that.

So - the images - can you please help me to understand how I can add these. If I can't add them, how can anyone prove anything that was pre-internet?

Here are copies of three newspaper clipping images I have: https://imgur.com/4ms7Om0 https://imgur.com/bc5yefA https://imgur.com/ISteTao Photoloop (talk) 07:44, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are no circumstances in which Commons accepts unlicensed copyrighted materials. - Jmabel ! talk 15:15, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Photoloop: To be here, on Commons, clippings from the 1970s in the U.S. must meet the condition stated in PD-US-no notice. In the clippings linked above, the two articles from AP are not usable on Commons. See the introduction at the top of the page Category:Associated Press articles. For the article by David Lightman, you would have to do your own research to find if The Evening Sun of Baltimore had a copyright notice. Images in fair use are are not possible on Commons. For that, you would have to see with Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:34, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Category:Dont overwrite-file templates" automatically showing files which use one of its templates

As I said here, all files using "Template:Map-from-year-dont-overwrite" template are automatically shown as belonging to "Category:Dont overwrite-file templates", where only templates sholud belong. It doesn't happen with other templates belonging to the same category, whose content is almost identical in these aspects. It's really frustrating me. Is there here anybody who knows enough about templates, who can help? Thank you. MGeog2022 (talk) 11:50, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If I remove the category from the template (I restored it later), the files continue to be shown as part of the category, even when the template itself doesn't. So I suspect the template is OK now, but the files continue belonging to "Dont overwrite-file templates" as a hidden category. Any help about how to fix this is appreciated. MGeog2022 (talk) 12:02, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MGeog2022: When you change a template in a way that changes categories of pages that use it, MediaWiki doesn't immediately apply that change to every page that uses the template. Instead, it slowly processes the change in the background. You can tell when this is happening because the file appear in its category page, but the category doesn't appear on the file page. You can force a particular page to update by a null edit. Edit the file page and choose "Publish" without changing anything. This won't leave an entry in the edit history, but it will cause MediaWiki to recalculate the page's categories. --bjh21 (talk) 12:19, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bjh21: I've just verified that an update to a file, without making any changes, fixed it. I'll do it for all other implied files. Thank you very much :-) MGeog2022 (talk) 12:37, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

updating corporate logo as company now has a new logo How to?

Hello, Iogen has updated its logo. It is copyrighted to Iogen but authorizes its use here on the Iogen Corporation entry. how do I make the switch? I have account just unsure of how to update. Thx N Nancy1035 (talk) 15:34, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Nancy1035: "authorizes its use here" doesn't help. Commons hosts only media that is either free of copyright (simple logos are often not copyrightable even though they are trademarked, but you say this one is copyrighted so that doesn't apply) or offer a free license that allows for derivative works and commercial use, which almost no for-profit corporation will ever do with their logo.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Is this about getting the logo into an article on the English-language Wikipedia? They allow a means to upload non-free logos within the English-language Wikipedia (not involving Commons at all) for this specific purpose. See en:Template:Non-free logo, and make sure you read the "To the uploader" section.
Also, two other things probably worth knowing: (1) if you have a connection to the company, make sure you are familiar with en:WP:COI, because if you don't disclose that connection properly, the English-language Wikipedia is likely to block you for failing to disclose a conflict of interest. (2) In the (unlikely) event that this logo is actually appropriate for Commons, make sure you upload under a new filename, then change Wikipedia to use the new file. Do not overwrite an existing logo on Commons, which is still of historical interest.
I know that's a lot: you are doing something that's actually a bit tricky to get right, and I'm trying to make sure you know where all the pitfalls are. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

After uploading new version of the photo, the quality of the photo doesn't change when you open it. The same problem with a cropped image. FlorianH76 (talk) 20:49, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's fine; it's a caching issue, and it will resolve on its own, given enough time. The image is updated, and I can see the new one has a larger filesize and a higher resolution. For you, the old image is cached, because you viewed that image before uploading a new one in-place. The same URL is handled by the cache. Elizium23 (talk) 22:12, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding File:TRINITY.jpg the second edit in the file's history (11 June 2009‎) uploaded a completely different and unrelated image. • @Mweemba Slaighter: It would be really useful to say what competition, there are many here.
  • You may grant any license for your own work. In order to upload to Commons, though, that license must allow (1) derivative works and (2) commercial use, both without payment. You may require that the work be attributed to you. We recommend the license {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} which gives the required permissions, and requires that the work be attributed to you. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading image of artwork from famous artist

I would like to upload images of artwork to accompany the Wikipedia article of an artist. What steps do I need to take to ensure that I comply with Wikipedia's guidelines for doing so? The works themselves are not in the public domain, but are displayed in galleries all over the world. There are also images that are available for view on third party sites and others that are not.

Any insight on guidance would be very much appreciated.

I would propose the following justification:

Purpose of use in article(WP:NFCC#8) To support encyclopedic discussion of this work in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s):

This image further illustrates the variation in the artist's oeuvre; showing a portrait, the subject of which is a person who has been mentioned in the biographical section of the wikipedia article.

Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) This image cannot be replaced because it illustrated the direct relation between the person painted and mentioned in the article as well as further illuminating the broad variation in the artist's body of work.

Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The image is a small, low-res version of the painting in question; and cannot be used in any means of reproduction.

Respect for commercial opportunities(WP:NFCC#2) The image is small and of low-quality, making it unusable for reproduction or redistribution. Gcath (talk) 12:46, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Commons does not support fair use. Your list of criteria from WP:NFCC is not valid for Commons but for uploads at en:wp. At Commons, if the works of the artist are not yet in the public domain and if the freedom of panorama exception does not apply, a written permission by the artist or their heirs is required. See COM:L and COM:VRT for details. AFBorchert (talk) 13:05, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SVG translation

Hi there, I hope someone can help. I tried to add an Italian translated cation to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Visualisation_mode_median_mean.svg. From the changes, however, it looks like I might have deleted the English caption. I then tried to undo the change, but undo failed. Can someone put this file back to its state before my changes?

In general, I'm finding it very difficult to add a translation to this svg in Wikipedia without extensive research. There is already a Spanish translation in the svg file and the Spanish words ("moda" / "mediana" / "media") in the picture are exactly the same in Italian. Additionally, the Italian caption would be "Una funzione di distribuzione con evidenziate la moda, la mediana e la media". Can anyone knowledgeable in svg translations help add these to the file?

It seems that this issue is affecting everyone. Time to let the maintainer know. StellarHalo (talk) 03:00, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you are actually asking about Wikipedia (this is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons), see en:Help:Introduction. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for an image of 668 St. Cloud Road in Los Angeles

Is there a way to find common(ers?) in the LA area, specifically Bel-Air? There is an article going to DYK about 668 St. Cloud Road, the Reagan's former home. It does not have an image and I think that would be very useful! Maury Markowitz (talk) 18:50, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Maury Markowitz: Look for who has photographed other nearby topics in the last few years. Probably start from Category:2023 in Los Angeles - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it ok to upload a photograph I took of a book & original art published Jan 1, 1921

Hello,

I own and took a photo of a book and original art created/published January 1, 1921, by Olive Roberts Barton (artist is E.R. Higgins) for her book "Nancy & Dick in Helter-Skelter-Land" I hope to use in a wikipedia article titled "Helter Skelter"

I am new to uploading a picture to Wik.

Thanks Casarachi (talk) 20:05, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Per [2], this was published in the USA. Any book published in the US before 1928 should be in the public domain there and therefore OK for uploading to Wikimedia Commons with the {{PD-US-expired}} tag. --Rosenzweig τ 20:55, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Casarachi (talk) 21:27, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this photograph dated circa 1908 is in the public domain. Can someone help me confirm? --TheSwamphen (talk) 06:19, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is OK. I added a license. Yann (talk) 07:49, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Upload images to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine

I tried to upload several images to wikimedia commons using OpenRefine. I reconciled and created new items for each item, and edited schema with Target Wikibase instance as Wikimedia Commons. After I clicked 'Upload edits to Wikibase', it showed percentage completed; I also logged in my account. But I can't find uploads in my 'Uploads' or 'Contributions', neither can I find the images I uploaded with the file names. Thus I believe my upload operation did not succeed. What may be the reason? Really appreciate help of any kind! Alefang (talk) 01:28, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of images according to background objects

Would you please point me to the Commons policy re Categorization of images according to background objects which are not the main subject of the image? In the example shown below, various objects such as vehicles in the background have been categorized. Is this in line with Commons policy please? To my mind, a user looking at the images in the category "Mercedes-Benz W115" would probably not be interested in an image of a tram with an inconsequential "Mercedes-Benz W115" in the background.

GTHO (talk) 04:27, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, there really isn't a precise policy on this. It's more of a "would it be useful to a user?" In general, the older a photo, the more likely it's OK to include minor details, because it is less likely we will have a large number of good images from the period. FWIW, I would not have added this category, but might have added a similar category for an image from 1910.- Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I go about replacing a jpeg with a higher-resolution png?

The image File:Zwikmachine_1885.jpg is used in 7 places on the various wikipedias. ? David S. Soriano (talk) 22:07, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
