On July 6, 2009, Wikispecies announced a collaboration with ZooKeys, a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal on taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and evolution of animals. Unlike most journals, ZooKeys papers are available for download, printing, and distribution for free (in HTML, XML, and PDF format). Starting from July 9, 2009, images of species will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for usage in Wikispecies and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. The images are copied or cropped from ZooKeys' papers, sometimes with minor touch-ups. The images from ZooKeys will be placed in this category.
