Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View of the so-called sarcophagus of Saint Servatius in the crypt of the Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht, Netherlands. The picture was taken through the wrought iron window separating the so-called small crypt from the crypt of Saint Servatius. The sarcophagus is Frankish and was placed here at some point in the 20th century. It is unlikely to have anything to do with Saint Servatius, who died in the late 4th century. Normally, the small crypt cannot be accessed but at this special occasion, the 2018 Heiligdomsvaart ("Relics Pilgrimage"), it is open for pilgrims to visit. The history of the Heiligdomsvaart goes back to the Middle Ages. The first 'modern' version of this seven-yearly, ten-day catholic pilgrimage took place in 1874. The 2018 Heiligdomsvaart was the 55th modern edition.
