Description
English: Biot and Gay Lussac 1804 plate - Udvar-Hazy Center, Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia, USA. French plate from the 1800s.
French scientists Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Jean-Baptiste Biot - ascending from the garden of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (wikisource) - reached an altitude of 4000 meters on 24 August 1804. Ascending without Biot Gay-Lussac reached a new record of 7016 meters a few days later, on 16 September.
