The life of the collegestudent is sedentary in character, and on that very account theheads of our universities are right in encouraging college sportalong all lines. Some evils have crept in, but the great goodand the many benefits to the student body much more than over-balance these. The modern college student needs the exercise,and those who do not come out for the teams use the energy andtime encouraging their representatives, which formerly they spentin drinking and other forms of dissipation. No matter how wefeel toward sport, it is a fact that college athletics play a greatrole in undergraduate life and must be taken into account. There should be more sport for sportssake and there would then be better teams and more generalgood for the student body as a whole. Every college man shouldget into some form of athletics. He may not make the team,but he will be building up his body and making himself a morevaluable member of society. There are thousands of students inour colleges who do not come out for athletics because they feelthat they cannot make the team. Many of them would do verywell in some sport or other, and they should not give tip. Theyshould keep on tr3ing. for even though they do not make theteam they are surely building up their physical powers.
