Jeanne ne se résigne pas et déclare qu'il lui faut aller voir le dauphin, dut-elle y user ses jambes jusqu'aux genoux. Jeanne réussit à convaincre Jean de Metz et Bertrand de Poulangy, hommes d'armes, qui voulurent bien l'accompagner tandis que les braves gens du lieu se cotisèrent pour offrir à Jeanne un équipement convenable. Le sire de Baudricourt enfin céda. Il lui donne une épée et en autorisant le départ, le 23 février 1429, lui remit une lettre d'introduction pour le dauphin. A Chinon, où se trouvait Charles VII, la petite troupe arrive le 6 mars et les difficultés recommencent. Depuis six mois Orléans était assiégée par les Anglais et le roi avait épuisé ses réserves d'hommes et d'argent. Il accueillit avec méfiance celle qui se disait envoyée de Dieu et avant de lui conférer le titre de «chef de guerre» il la fit interroger par des gens d'église de Poitiers. |
