„Der von Gold und Rot gespaltene Schild zeigt vorn in Gold unter einer Kaiserkrone einen goldenen bewehrten, rot gezungten schwarzen Doppeladler, hinten in Rot zwei schräg gekreuzte silberne Schlüssel mit abgewendeten Bärten oben, wobei der Schlüssel mit dem zur Schildmitte weisenden Bart über dem anderen Schlüssel liegt.“[1]

Dieses Stadtwappen ist seit 1853 offizielles Wappen der Stadt und setzt sich aus den schon länger in Gebrauch befindlichen zwei Wappen zusammen. Der doppelköpfige Reichsadler im vorderen Teil des Wappens ist dabei der Stadt nach dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg vom Kaiser als Zeichen des besonderen Schutzes verliehen worden, als die Stadt unter großen Opfern die kaiserlichen Truppen aufgenommen und versorgt hatte. Im hinteren Teil des Wappens befinden sich die beiden Schlüssel aus dem Wappen des ehemaligen Stadtherren, des Bischofs von Minden.
