The Satsuma Rebellion was the defining war of the Meiji Restoration, in which forces from the provinces of Satsuma, Tosa, Aki, Echizen and Owari under the command of Saigo Takamori attacked and captured Kyoto in 1868 and announced the restoration of the Emperor.
