The prize was presented to the La Costa Canyon journalism department on April 15th by the Journalism Education Association during the opening keynote ceremony in Portland, Oregon at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention, which is attended by thousands of student journalists from across the United States. [3] Schools who apply for the award have their applications reviewed by a committee of representatives from the sponsoring organizations: Journalism Education Association, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, National Scholastic Press Association and the Quill and Scroll Society.

Staff writers and Editors of the journalism programs place regularly in "Write Off" competitions in the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention. In 2009 LCCNEWS.com was awarded third place nationally for best news website.
