The 2009 Victorian Football League (VFL) season was an Australian Rules Football competition commencing on 11 April and concluding with the North Ballarat Roosters' 23-point Grand-Final defeat of the Northern Bullants on 25 September.

Finals series
Overview
The Tasmania Devils did not compete this season as the Australian Football League withdrew them. The Bendigo Bombers could not play at their home ground Queen Elizabeth Oval because it was in poor shape. The Bendigo Bombers had other problems: after the season was finished, they had no wins after 20 rounds. Frankston Dolphins had problems as well after their grandstand was burnt down after the 2008 season. North Ballarat Roosters and Williamstown Seagulls were the strong teams for the regular season. Coburg had a disappointing season: after starting off well they lost their first coach Jade Rawlings half way through the season because he stepped in as the replacement for Terry Wallace at Richmond. The Grand Final will be held at Etihad Stadium on 25 September 2009.
J.J Liston Trophy
The J.J. Liston Trophy is a trophy awarded to the best and fairest senior VFL player. Myles Sewell, the brother of Hawthorn premiership player Brad, won the trophy in 2009.
State screening
Players who were invited to an AFL state screening are Marcus Marigliani from Frankston, Jack Redpath from Bendigo, Cameron Pederson from Box Hill, Jarrod Dalton from Port Melbourne, Sam Dwyer also from Port Melbourne, Danny Rampe from Williamstown and Patty Rose also from Williamstown.

The major sponsors of the VFL for 2009 are Australia Post, Ford, Kombat, Buffalo Sports and TRU Energy.
Broadcasters
This year's season was again broadcast on ABC 1 and SEN 1116.
