Shouldn't we spell his name consistently? Belinsky or Belinskii? Siorale (talk) 04:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really true to say Isaiah Berlin has a purely negative opinion of Belinsky's insights as a critic--he goes to some pains to point out the contradictions in his opinions, which Belinsky himself was aware of. Berlin goes to some pains to point out that Belinsky discovered or brought to greater fame and recognition, many of the greatest Russian writers and thinkers of his time--he admires Belinsky as a literary critic, but does not shy away from his many deficiencies. I think he believes the things Belinsky got right are at least as important as the things he got wrong. It's actually not helpful to assume any of Berlin's essays on important thinkers are purely negative or positive--they aim to be measured, objective, yet also highly empathic evaluations of influential persons in the history of thought--not attempts to either lionize or demonize them. In Rootless cosmopolitanism it says that he coined the term. Was he an antisemite?--88.73.42.224 (talk) 11:59, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
