Illegitimacy, it would seem. According to the French wikipedia article, [footnote 1]: Silly was his mother's then-married surname, while Bécaud was his actual father's surname. François Silly adopted the name Gilbert Bécaud in 1952.

At the moment there is no explanation in the article for him not performing under his birth name.
