Illegitimacy, it would seem. According to the French wikipedia article, [footnote 1]: Silly was his mother's then-married surname, while Bécaud was his actual father's surname. François Silly adopted the name Gilbert Bécaud in 1952. |

Name change?
[edit]At the moment there is no explanation in the article for him not performing under his birth name.
