This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Stats stub with notability concerns. I can't find anything that would support a passing of WP:SPORTBASIC or any other guideline. Bola is a mere squad listing, Tribun News is a brief quote, and Detik News is another squad listing. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 19:19, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Potentially fails WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC. The article is currently sourced to a stats page and Facebook, both of which clearly are not acceptable. My own searches yield nothing better than the likes of Match Centre and Times of Malta, which do not provide significant enough coverage for a stand-alone article on Cini. - Just like Zean Leonardi, I wish to add more references but couldn't find any. I feel a little heartbroken about this, and wish for this article to stay up, but honestly I don't know what I can do to add more references. If you could pls edit the page with more references to help. I just want to make the Maltese people more recognizable in Wikipedia. GabrylMT(Talk to Gabryl) 14:45, 1 September 2024 (CEST)
- If you're struggling to find news sources that discuss Cini in significant depth then the likelihood is that they don't exist. Also worth noting that Wikipedia is not a place for making your favourite footballers 'more recognisable'. You should only be writing about footballers that already have plenty of coverage. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 13:25, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- Also another thing that makes me MORE heartbroken about this situation is that an article like Dexter Xuereb is allowed and mine is NOT. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY ARTICLE!?. Just wanted to make footballers more recognizable :( GabrylMT(Talk to Gabryl) 14:51, 1 September 2024 (CEST)
- Feel free to nominate Dexter Xuereb for AfD if you don't find sources for that article. Two differences compared to Cini that I see: 1. Xuereb has made more professional performances, 2. He has made an appearance for the senior national team. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 13:35, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

Originally a PROD by User:Fram, which I fully supported. Sources have been added but none of them satisfy WP:SPORTBASIC or WP:GNG as all are database sources or passing mentions. The subject is playing in the second tier of New Zealand and the best that I can find on him is Friends of Football. I fail to see how Frame is notable. - Gehard Hasa (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
Failure of WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG. Played 10 minutes in Albania's highest league and 13 games in the semi-pro second tier.
Sources in the article aren’t about him. Both is about the squad, with this to say about Hasa: ”Gerhard Hasa from striker has been adapted to right back” + “The innovation was the activation of striker Gehard Hasa as right back, another sector where Partizan has problems”. This is a friendly match report.
This comes much closer to significant coverage, but since his career didn’t pan out, that article also seems a bit inconsequential. What do you think? Geschichte (talk) 20:22, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

- (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL)
This Slovak men's footballer, who seems to have never played in any European top-tier clubs, was deemed non-notable back in 2015 AfD discussion. I have searched his name in conjunction with *any club he has played for* and "site:.sk", but couldn't find any significant coverage that would suggest he is now notable per WP:GNG only, as NFOOTBALL no longer exists. The best secondary source I found was AktualitySK, which only mentions Petrovský in an image caption when he played for Skalica in 2016. Excluding database sources, I only found namesakes and a lot of hits about the unrelated ice hockey player Servac Petrovský. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 11:23, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

- @Svartner, well, at one point the club had professional status. Although for a short period, it also one of three clubs in its region ever competing among professional teams. Right now, it seems to be existing as an amateur club that is based on a team of football veterans. It would be a pity to lose all the information I provided, but I guess, "que sera, sera". - Strong keep - found two sources, very quickly, that indicate some form of notability, especially in the realm of Mexican football. This source and this source, which explain how he would make his debut in the Liga MX at age 29 due to the starting goalkeeper's injury, and this source (comes from here), which I think is really strong as a contribution towards WP:GNG. Talks about how he got his shot to play in the first division for the first time at age 29, talks about his past with UAEM and Atlante, and how he was one of a group of players who went from Cancun to Queretaro after a club was rebought. Pinging GiantSnowman as requested, and Azarctic because why not. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:07, 1 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Source 1 - nothing towards GNG, Source 2 has zero GNG, source 3 and 4 (the same thing) has 7 lines specifically on Bravo. This is not a GNG pass based on the sources provided. Dougal18 (talk) 14:11, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- So what you're saying is that source 3/4 does confer something towards GNG. Here is what it says specifically about him (excluding the title):
I'll let you do some Google translate. This content is honestly quite solid. It's five significant, long sentences. Talks about him and there's nothing WP:ROUTINE about it. It goes more than just surface level. This source clearly counts towards GNG, no question about it. It meets all the criteria. Sources 1 and 2 are a bit more shaky, but here's what they say on him:La lesión del guardameta titular, Gil Alcalá, obligó al Querétaro a utilizar a Eduardo Bravo, quien no tenía experiencia en la Primera División. [...]
Although there is much less true content here, I think that the first source just scrapes by GNG criteria for "significant coverage" (it addresses Bravo directly and in detail, it's NOT just a trivial mention of him). All other criteria is easily passed. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:12, 7 September 2024 (UTC)- @Dougal18: And if that wasn't enough, here is more significant coverage on him. It can be found here. It says
Once again, this is clearly GNG-passing— it meets all the criteria, from presumed to independent of the subject. It passes the "significant coverage" criteria, most notably. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:28, 7 September 2024 (UTC)- It's one event sourced multiple times. "De acuerdo a un comunicado de prensa" translates as "According to a press release" therefore disqualifying that a source.Dougal18 (talk) 08:45, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- It's still a secondary source, independent of the subject. Not disqualifying at all. Paul Vaurie (talk) 04:09, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

- Delete Subject fails WP:GNG due to lack of significant coverage. Of the above mentioned sources, all are from the same date so that fails WP:SUSTAINED coverage. Two of the sources are also from the same publication, so the count as one for the purposes of establishing notability. All that said, none of the sources have anything significant on the subject, only that he his making his league debut at the age of 29. It simply isn't enough for a GNG pass. Alvaldi (talk) 17:20, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Delete. All four links are utterly routine transactional reports derived from the same press release and do not count at all towards GNG. The last one is also trivial. As Alvaldi mentions, another requirement of notability is SUSTAINED coverage, and that is objectively failed if all we have are four refactored press announcements from the same day. JoelleJay (talk) 02:22, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- Here's the press release. Clearly fails WP:N's requirement for independence, emph mine:
It is common for multiple newspapers or journals to publish the same story, sometimes with minor alterations or different headlines, but one story does not constitute multiple works. Several journals simultaneously publishing different articles does not always constitute multiple works, especially when the authors are relying on the same sources, and merely restating the same information.

I cannot find any evidence of notability for Slovak men's footballer to meet WP:GNG. His playing career was confined to lower leagues, having last played for Zlaté Moravce in 2014 before suddenly disappearing. The only secondary sources I found are SME written in 2014 and 2018, both of which only mention him in an image caption. Using the keyword "Patrik Brezina" on Google find other men with the same name, failing WP:V too. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 13:46, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

His only claim to notability is playing less than one minute in a cup game. Aside from that, I found Chechnya Today, which mentions him running a training session for kids at a local school, which, on its own, is not enough to pass WP:SPORTBASIC or WP:GNG, which require significant coverage in multiple independent sources. Sesyavin only ever played 13 mins in a cup match for Rotor's senior team, which is not a particularly strong claim to notability. I found Rambler, which mentions him once in the match report and once in the squad list, and Sport 34, which only mentions him three times in the match report itself. Was presumed notable for 28 mins in a cup match. Shcherbin has played in the lower levels since and there is no sign of passing WP:SPORTBASIC. This was deleted in 2022 with editors noting that they couldn't even find basic stats pages. It's been recreated with no additional evidence that this football player passes WP:NSPORT, much less WP:GNG. The only sources are WP:ROUTINE coverage of matches and transfers in Iran; no WP:SIGCOV at all and not even any of the common stats profile pages. There's also insufficient evidence for the claim he plays or played for Sporting CP B; the only source for that claim is this dodgy-looking article, but this player has never appeared on the Sporting CP B roster or anywhere on Sporting CP's website. The result was keep. I understand the original close and the factors that led there. Only very minimal content inside the article and has no inline citations. The one and only source ([1]) is by the RSSSF, which collects statistics of every football result. Due to it lacking coverage in sources, it fails WP:GNG. Azarctic (talk) 01:40, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

- Comment I am curious why you picked this season page out of all of them from 1902-03 to 1942-43. Technically there is nothing wrong with the article, it shows a historical table of what was then called an amateur league. However I believe the league did have good coverage in Mexican media. There maybe room for improvement, but in it's current form, I would combined all the league tables into one or maybe two articles. But historically, this league is part of the history of football in Mexico. So... also, how much WP:BEFORE did you do? I guess the coverage would be different in the 1940s due to WW2 and the political situation, so my bet is it's all about the offline sources anyway. Govvy (talk) 09:52, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- These tables are irrelevant anyway. It can’t be that significant if it’s getting 19 views per month either. All these seasonal articles should really be redirected to Primera Fuerza or deleted because there is barely anything in them in terms on content, which is why I picked this one because it has less content than the others, as well as barely any coverage. Relisting comment: Relisting. A review of sources, and those in the Spanish-language article, would be helpful.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Liz Read! Talk! 02:13, 30 August 2024 (UTC)- Comment - just to be clear, deleting this article would also confer deleting every single "Primera Fuerza" season from 1902 to 1943. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:48, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- Keep, as this division is notable, and so are its seasons— important to note that it was the highest-level division in the country. Impossible for me to review and search all the Spanish-language offline sources, but the existence of sources such as Crónica del fútbol mexicano: Por amor a la camiseta and Historia General del Fútbol Mexicano and their usage as sources on the Spanish-language article suggest that they have material related to this specific season and the other seasons of this competition as well. Overall, it does us no good deleting this as it's clearly the highest level for football back then in Mexico, sets a bad precedent for football seasons in other countries too. The only reason this would be deleted is because it's hard to find offline sources, to dissect them, and to use them on Wikipedia. Which would be a shame. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:55, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

The result was redirect to Primera Fuerza. Closing this as a Redirect as an ATD. Despite this AFD being open for 3 weeks, editors have failed to add a single reliable source to the article under discussion or bring one into this discussion so I can not close this as Keep. I encouraged editors to review sources in the Spanish language article but that didn't happen either.

- In both iterations of this article; the first article had one editor with a clear COI (CreweNufan (talk · contribs), Nufan being the company that controls the club), while given the timing of the article creation and CreweNufan's first edit (ten minutes apart), the article creation was obviously coordinated, which makes me somewhat suspicious that the article's creator may involved with the club. The result was delete. Editors here have patiently explained, through words and a source table, while the sources are inadequate to establish notabilty as expected by Wikipedia newer standards of notability for sports figure (from 2022). The fact that there are other articles that are in equally bad shape is irrelevant to this discussion. You can always nominate them for an AFD discussion. - You mean draftify per above? I would be OK with that, a reasonable compromise. Currently only three sources are used, one is about his father not him, one is about his debut, which doesn't demonstrate any notability, and one is about his club's success, not about him. FromCzech (talk) 18:45, 25 August 2024 (UTC)
- Why do you feel the need to change someone's free opinion? This is a democratic discussion (which would not be necessary if you were not a deleting hardliner). Three references and five external links prefectly demonstrate notability. Pospeak (talk) 12:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not changing anyone's opinion, I'm just trying to spark a discussion because the post was unclear. It's the quality of the sources that matters, not the quantity. And that was nowhere near achieved in this case, as I analyze above. FromCzech (talk) 12:45, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- What is unclear about the keep statement? As I wrote earlier, 8 sources (containing one full-length interview) is more than many others footballer pages have. Perfectly sufficient for stub. Pospeak (talk) 12:56, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Only 3 sources (5 are external links/databases). Interview does not demonstrate notability. This article cannot be compared with others, where sources proving notability may exist but they are just not used, while here there are none such sources. If you know about a page, where you doubt the existence of significant coverage, you can nominate it for deletion, and do not use it to defend existence of this one.
- I am asking user GiantSnowman, who also mentioned "delete", to elaborate on "no evidence of notability". The author of this article is not interested in hearing it from me. FromCzech (talk) 13:19, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

- I assume that you don't know much about the Czech media, so I'll explain it to you. Znoj-tyden.cz is a weekly newspaper from the Znojmo District with more than 20 years of tradition. It is the most read newspapers in the region with almost 6,000 followers on Facebook. More than three and a half million people visit Denik.cz for news every month and with 1.8 million readers, it is the most read printed newspaper in the Czech Republic. Again, these references are perfectly sufficient for stub and demonstrate notability, because what else should demonstrate it more than an interview in the most widely read newspaper in the country? If you disagree with this, then name me which sources you think are notable. And consider that this is a player from a minor league team, so he's unlikely to get into Sports Illustrated or L'Équipe like the vast majority of players. Pospeak (talk) 05:13, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Znojemský deník is a branch of Deník.cz of local importance. Similarly, Znoj-tyden is also only a local media. All the sources used, apart from the databases, write about an 18-year-old boy who scored a goal on his professional debut, which is certainly a grateful topic for club pages and local media, but does nothing to support what makes this boy so significant that he deserves his own page in the encyclopedia. Their content is, first of all, one event, not the career and life of the person in question, primarily because his career and life are still ahead of him. But how few games and minutes he's played, and that he hasn't played in a professional competition since September 2022, speaks loudly against his importance. FromCzech (talk) 06:28, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Your problem is that you are trashing other people's resources, while the pages you created have the same ones. - The fact that he made his debut at such a young age and scored a goal is significant in itself, which is why these articles were written about him. Deník.cz is a medium whose reach in the sports section is nationwide, and I emphasize again that articles from its regional editorial offices are widely cited. - External links are irrelevant - what we need are detailed, significant in-line references. Do we have that here? GiantSnowman 14:38, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- What is unclear about the keep statement? As I wrote earlier, 8 sources (containing one full-length interview) is more than many others footballer pages have. Perfectly sufficient for stub. Pospeak (talk) 12:56, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- Why do you feel the need to change someone's free opinion? This is a democratic discussion (which would not be necessary if you were not a deleting hardliner). Three references and five external links prefectly demonstrate notability. Pospeak (talk) 12:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- @21.Andromedae: Can you elaborate more on your point? FromCzech (talk) 13:20, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- You mean draftify per above? I would be OK with that, a reasonable compromise. Currently only three sources are used, one is about his father not him, one is about his debut, which doesn't demonstrate any notability, and one is about his club's success, not about him. Relisting comment: Relisting as I don't see a consensus. It would help to see a source review, ideally in a table.

- What is non-independent on football association and league sites? Are they the player's employer? I can admit that the problem may be with the club sites, although they are also quite commonly used as a resource. The fact that the articles appeared in previous years does not mean that they do not meet significant coverage. As I've written before, these articles were created by a player becoming interesting by scoring a goal on his league debut. So it wasn't just the first match. If he hadn't scored a goal, nobody would have written about him or interviewed him. Evaluating signaficant coverage for sources that are statistics is nonsense. These are there as support, although (again) they are national association and league profile pages (ie resources with a national reach). In conclusion, I would add that there is also a yellow evaluation color for partially meet. By your standards, half of Wikipedia should disappear. Pospeak (talk) 05:31, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think the association and league are regarded on the same level as the employer because they all have a similar vested interest in promoting "their" players. They are not unreliable per se, so they can be used (i.e. not be thrown out/"disappear"), but not independent either. Geschichte (talk) 06:08, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- In my opinion, the argument of promoting "their" players (who are not in any employment relationship with the association or league) is exaggerated. We can say ad absurdum that the newspaper's activity is motivated by self-promotion with the help of readership, which brings profit from web advertising. Pospeak (talk) 07:08, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Per WP:SPORTBASIC, listings in database sources does not go towards establishing notability and neither do sources from team sites and governing sports bodies. My point with the dates on the non-database sources is that even if they were significant, which they ain't, they would fail WP:SUSTAINED as a brief bursts of news coverage several years ago regarding a players debut with no continuing coverage indicates that the player just isn't notable. Alvaldi (talk) 10:17, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- As I wrote earlier, sources that are statistics are listed as support. We can easily move them to external sources. Newer references from 2022 and 2023 have been added to support notability. Pospeak (talk) 11:25, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify, there is nothing wrong with having database sources in articles to support statements within the article (for example, that the subject scored x many goals during a specific season). However, they do not count towards establishing that the player is notable. For this article to be kept, it has to been shown that the subject has received significant coverage in reliable sources independent of the subject (no team or league websites, no quotes from coaches or teammates etc.) over a sufficiently significant period of time. Brief burst of articles regarding his debut over a span of few days or trivial mentions is not enough. Alvaldi (talk) 12:11, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- If I leave out the team, league and association pages, there are still 4 newspaper articles (from 2021-2023). I note that these media have a nationwide reach. The articles are not only about his debut, but also the following events in his career. I would encourage all reviewers to look at other players' sites that are created and the number and quality of resources. Then you will find that the discussion about this player is pointless. Pospeak (talk) 13:42, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Two of those newspaper sources [3][4] trivial mention him once each. The other two mention him only in relation of one event (his debut) and are written in a span of few days. That simply is not enough to pass WP:GNG. Alvaldi (talk) 15:36, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- We disagree on what is notable. This waste of resources, in the context of other footballers' sites, is undignified. First of all, it is allegedly a small number of sources, then their reach is questioned (without the authors knowing a single Czech medium), and finally, the problem is that they were published a short time after each other. It is a clear attempt to delete this article regardless of its constant improvement. Pospeak (talk) 16:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

That's why I've been replacing them with closest reliable sources I could find, especially regarding the footballer's debut and first goal. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 15:38, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
