ifood.tv

I've noticed links to ifood.tv popping up here and there. In most cases, by spot checking, I found the links added by IP users mapping to India. (Look for 122. IPs). I'm not entirely convinced that this is spam ... well ... it's spam, but it's borderline useful content as opposed to merely being a link aggregator or trying to push a commercial product. Maybe I'll be more dogmatic tomorrow, but I thought I would post it here first to see if anyone has a strong opinion one way or the other on removing the links. --B 02:33, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another Related Domain - selling books as well..
In addition, it has been confirmed by CheckUser, that the three named accounts (Cedarkey1, Pputter, Damslerset) on the WP:AN thread above, as well as a fourth account Solknats (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) are related. If you look at Special:Contributions/Solknats he clearly identifies himself by first & last name, although the last name has been removed from the current version of his userpage. --Versageek 21:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

megadry.com

I have spotted some spamming activity on behalf of megadry.com where user Whynotthestars has been adding links to this site, as has Hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis has also removed a link to a non profit organisation that works in the same field.

User Whynotthestars is still acting in a way that I believe is unhelpful. On 19:21, 4 December 2007 he returned to the Sleep_hyperhidrosis page and again removed a link to a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to this field. I think this may be a case of trying to reduce exposure of alternative sites to the one that he has been spamming. He earlier replaced the link to this non-profit with a spam-link to megadry and this action was regarded by Voyagerfan5761 as vandalism.

I consider these links acceptable links to informative pages on the web site of a major non-profit, s an uninvolveded ed. who sometimes works on medical articles, I will reinsert them if they are removed. A good modest job of providing information appropriately to the encyclopedia. The user block is about to expire, so there is no point in contesting it. I consider it very ill-advised. Some points:

  • The IP account has a clear conflict of interest, the IP is registered to ARC
  • The name ArcInfo suggest also a conflict of interest, and arcinfo is active/created just shortly after the IP, suggesting that the IP-user created that account (no proof here).
  • These 2 accounts perform link-additions only.
  • The use of {{cite web}} does suggest that the editors have worked more on wikipedia, or are very fast learners.
  • There are only two links to this domain not added by these accounts, one on the page of the organisation, one added by another IP account outside of the range (interestingly, not too far away from 213.83.109.90; IP 213.42.21.156, diff, adding the same text as 213.83.109.90 and arcinfo). If the link is really that useful, then more uninvolved editors would have used it.
  • The accounts do not discuss when pointed that way, a block to remind them that their unilateral additions are considered spamming here, and to promote discussion seems appropriate, I would suggest 24/31 hours.
  • Adding a discussion to the talkpages with a reason why the links might be useful to add to the page takes just as much time as adding the link to the page yourself.
  • Or, if the links are really useful, then I would suggest that these accounts contact an appropriate wikiproject, and when the wikiproject endorses their edits, then they can add the link.
  • The account can be blocked because of the username.

You are of course free to re-insert them, if you really think they are useful, though they might serve better as a reference (that seems to have been the faith of the external link 213.42.21.156 has added as well), and there are on some of the pages already quite some external links (e.g. Osteoarthritis now contains 13, which is arguably more than 'a few'). Just to say that I agree completely with all that Dirk has said here. This is excessive placement of external links by someone who has a "conflict of interest". Just as an extra note, we are dealing with a 'campaign' site here, not with an independent site aimed for providing information. I see that the edits of the two IP accounts are often to External links sections, Jobance's and Jennyzhang's edits only concern external links. I would define mainly editing to insert external links 'pushing your links', which translates on wikipedia into 'spamming'. Potential Investigative Tools

User A. B. has suggested I repeat an offer I made to him here, so I am reposting my original message:

With ref to your AN post, I have no idea if it will help but I have two possibly relevant tools I can offer.
One - wpW5 - will search article history and tell you when a piece of text (ie. a link) was added and who added it. It takes about 30 seconds in "quick" mode.
The other - lkScan - will search a user's entire contribs and compile every web link they've added to any article and put them into a sortable format.

Rondee Website

A new user Deanvesuvio (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · blacklist hits · AbuseLog · what links to user page · count · COIBot · Spamcheck · user page logs · x-wiki · status · Edit filter search · Google · StopForumSpam) has created an article Rondee which appears to be simply an advertisement for a long distance service. I placed a db-spam notice on top which he has removed 3 times, ignoring warnings. He also has two warnings on link spamming other articles with links to the website associated with this company.

De.wikipedia's linksearch says "Unterstützte Protokolle: http://, https://, ftp://, irc://, gopher://, telnet://, nntp://, worldwind://, mailto:, news:" (translation: "Supported protocols: http://, https://, ftp://, irc://, gopher://, telnet://, nntp://, worldwind://, mailto:, news:"). I am brand new to editing just started looking at updating the Neuroblastoma article a few days ago. I checked the history and saw that a few inappropriate links have been repeatedly added and removed only to be added again. Looks like different users/IP have been adding these links. The links are to Alex Lemonade Stand which is a non-profit to raise money for pediatric cancer research, but has no information about neuroblastoma, and the other is Post Pals which encourages messages sent to sick children, also with no information about neuroblastoma. Another one is called Loneliest Hour which does have some basic information aimed at parents of newly diagnosed children.

I first posted this to Arcadian's talk page since I saw that he had removed the links also, and he encouraged me to report it here since the removed links keep reappearing.

I added a link to a series of videos presented by neuroblastoma researchers. This conference is hosted by a non-profit that also raises money specifically for neuroblastoma, and the 2007 videos are forthcoming. Is this link appropriate? 2005 Chicago Neuroblastoma Conference Arcadian recommended I get more outside opinions on this.
