Sodablasting is a non-destructive method for many applications in cleaning, paint stripping, automotive restoration, industrial equipment maintenance, rust removal, graffiti removal, molecular steel pacification against rust, oil removal by saponification and translocation, masonry cleaning and restoration, soot remediation, boat hull cleaning, food processing facilities and equipment.

Grafitti Cleaning

City of Chicago uses Soda Blasting Technology to win the Grafitti war![1]

Structural Steel Cleaning

HardHat.com reports that: Soda blasting removes old paint and rust from surfaces in preparation for a new protective coating. It also eliminates electrolytes, such as acid and chlorides. After soda blasting, the structural steel will have no activated anode or cathode steel molecules. Even after extended periods the absence of rust can be observed in the bare metal. Surfaces cleaned with other methods can rust is as little as a few hours.[2]

With the recent issues regarding bridge collapses and the increased need for inspection of our aging roads & bridges, this article discusses the merits of using Soda Blasting to aid the inspection process.

But you must note that metal cannot be inspected without first removing protective coatings and patinas of rust. The soda blasting process removes coatings from any kind from a substrate safely and efficiently. It is very similar to traditional sand blasting, yet has the advantage of cleaning the surface without causing any harm to the substrate or the environment. Read more...[3]

Tools

The functional process of SodaBlasting: A SodaBlaster is a self contained system that includes a blast generator, high pressure compressed air, moisture decontamination system, blast hose with remote controls, and a blast nozzle that is capable of handling dry or wet blasting material.[4]

Blasting material

The blasting material consist of formulated sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda) having a crystalline structure that has a naked eye appearance of course granular sugar as opposed to the conventional powdery baking soda. Blasting soda is an extremely friable material that has micro fragmentation on impact, literally exploding away surface materials without damage to the substrate.[5]

Terminology

  • SodaBlasting - the action of using a SodaBlaster to clean a surface
  • SodaBlaster - the equipment used in the SodaBlasting Process
  • SodaBlastor - the factory trained and certified contractor doing the blasting
  • Abrasive Blasting - use of blasting material other than Soda
  • SodaBlast Cars - the act of SodaBlasting a car as done in auto restoration
  • SodaBlast Boats - the act of SodaBlasting a Boat as used in Marine Industry
  • SodaBlast Heavy Machinery - the act of SodaBlasting heavy equipment prior to painting
  • SodaBlast Cabinet - a cabinet used to blast parts

Process Inventor and Primary Manufacturer

The term SodaBlasting was coined by those involved in restoring the Statue of Liberty. (See sodablasting for more details) The process has since been refined with the latest developments coming from the original manufacturer of the trailer mounted sodablaster, Stripco®, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. Stripco®, Inc.'s has a patent pending on a device that allows the operator to adjust the amount of sodablast media that is introduced into the blast stream with the touch of a button.

Other Companies

Sodastrip Pty Ltd situated in Brisbane Australia distributes sodablasting equipment manufactured by Gritco Equipment.

Applications

It can be used for cleaning cars[6], boats hull[7], cleaning masonry [8], and cleaning food processing equipment[9].

Manufacturers, and Sandblast Converters

The following companies assemble, distribute or private label a soda blast type of machine that imitate the original Stripco® Mobile SodaBlaster: Sandstorm, Armex, Surfacetec, Eastwood, Ace Sandblasting. Sandblast designs use a lot of abrasive and less compressed air that an efficient sodablast design.

MMLJ (aka sandstorm, beco, sbs, cleanquip) is known to be the manufacturer of the Sand Blasting mechanisms & vessels, as recently as 2004 began to market it's closed top sandblaster under the name sodablast systems. Sodaworks has recently put it's own brand of sodablaster on diesel compressors.
