Lester Coleman

He was born at the Pensacola Naval Air station Hospital, 25 Sept 1943. He did not move to Panama City until he was six years old. Coleman's family are long time natives of Pensacola, where his grandfather, Lester Coleman, Sr retired from the US Navy, and his father, Lester Coleman, Jr was raised and worked for the Gulf Power Company before taking his family to Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Libya where he worked as a Electrical Engineer. Wiki continues to quote newspaper articles which contain inaccurate data. A "Pedia" must rely on it's own original research to maintain credibility. To rely on news clips is a flawed method of seeking credibility. Wiki must obtain a copy of Coleman's birth certificate from the Bureau of Vital Stats in Tallahassee, Fl.,

  • "Wiki" quotes newspaper articles because they are what we rely on. WP:V says "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth—whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true." Newspapers do not always get it right, but they usually do, and we presume that they are correct.
  • this source actually says that his hometown was Panama City. In my user comment at 25 October 2010 I assumed he was born there too, but I never explicitly posted that in the article. I struck out that little bit.
  • Wikipedia:BLP#Misuse_of_primary_sources says "Exercise caution in using primary sources. Do not use trial transcripts and other court records, or other public documents, to support assertions about a living person. Do not use public records that include personal details, such as date of birth, home value, traffic citations, vehicle registrations, and home or business addresses." - So we have to rely on what the newspapers say. So an editor will not "obtain a copy of Coleman's birth certificate from the Bureau of Vital Stats in Tallahassee, Fl.,"

While he was born in Panama City, Fl, this source says he's from Alabama. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:22, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • And while the book may be available now from a new publisher (the book is now self-published), the settlement papers from the original British publisher stated that all copies had been destroyed. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:25, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

INCORRECT

Trail of the Octopus is available from Amazon.com, the original Bloomsbury version, the Signet paperback, and the new edition published in 2010. Hurley never sued Lester Coleman, only Bloomsbury in a UK court where the burden of proof is on the defendant, not the Plaintiff, as it is in the United States. Co-Author, Donald Goddard died in 2005, leaving Coleman with all rights to the book. No one in any jurisdiction has ever sued Lester Coleman over Trail of the Octopus.
