Marvel Universe Online is the working title of an MMO game developed by Cryptic Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for Microsoft Windows Vista and Xbox 360 platforms.[1] It is said to revolve around the characters of the

. A recent IGN article stated that Marvel Universe Online would take history from 60 years of Marvel Comics as well as integrate current events in the comic books for the next five to ten years.[2]

Trailer

A teaser trailer has been released to promote the game, showing off statue-like images of various Marvel characters, but without any shown game-play footage. The visible characters in the trailer are Apocalypse, Cable, Captain America, Cyclops, Daredevil, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Nick Fury, Galactus, the Hulk, Magneto, Nightcrawler, the Punisher, Quicksilver, a Sentinel, Spider-Man, the Thing, Uatu and Wolverine.

Currently, there is much debate over playable characters. IGN.com reported that Cryptic is not ready to discuss character creation. But reported that it's possible that each server could allow players to play as an individual Marvel character. However, the major problem with this is that it would allow only one person per server to use a popular character, such as Wolverine or Spider-Man. While others would have to settle for using less-popular characters.

Though this MMO takes place in modern day, it comes with a 60-year history. The Brooklyn Bridge is where Gwen Stacy died. Mole Man lives underground, waiting for the day to rise up and take over the surface world. The X-Men's Gambit has become a Horseman of Apocalypse. While fantasy MMOs and even City of Heroes have to invent their back-story, Marvel Universe Online has a pre-set history, giving Cryptic an incredible resource for creating new stories.

The team-up goes deeper than this. Representatives from Cryptic and Microsoft have started attending Marvel's yearly creative getaway, in which future Marvel storylines are discussed. When MUO launches, its world will reflect the current events in the Marvel Universe. For those currently following Marvel Comics, that means the fallout from Civil War (which pits the heroes of the Marvel Universe against one another over the Superhero Registration Act), will be part of the online world. So will the upcoming World War Hulk, Decimation and other major storylines.

The plan is to keep the integration active over the course of five to ten years. However, the stories in MUO won't mimic those in the comics. Cryptic, with influence from Marvel, is creating new stories to be experienced only online. What happens in the comics will affect the game world, but it won't rule that world. It is possible that in the future, the game world might cross over into the comic-book universe creating a truly symbiotic relationship between the two mediums

Character creation also has issues. Many casual gamers could be disappointed upon buying a Marvel game and not being able to play as Marvel characters. Character creation would also allow characters from other fictional universes, such as DC Comics to be created into the Marvel universe, which is likely something Marvel won't allow.
