A shrug is a form of nonverbal communication that is performed by lifting both shoulders up, and is an indication of an individual either not knowing an answer to a question, or not caring about a result. It may be accentuated with raised eyebrows and/or an exaggerated frown. Shrugging is derived from the act of weighing two objects in one's hands, a process instinctively used by humans to compare weight based on which object takes more normal force from one's hand to accelerate upward against gravity. Since a shrug indicates that the subject does not know the answer to a question, it would imply that they were weighing the matter between their hands. A shrug merely involving the shoulders is a lazy form of the full shrug, which involves both shoulders and hands with palms facing upward.
A shrug is also a weight training exercise wherein weights are held with the hands, and then the shoulders are "shrugged" upwards. One variation is the "Hise shrug" wherein the weights are placed on a bar, the bar is placed across the shoulders, behind the neck, and the bar is "shrugged" upwards.
Finally, a shrug is a sweater that covers the shoulders and/or arms, and chest(normally worn by females). http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Sunnigrl73/shrug.jpg"
