Development
Following the commence of production for 'Thala' Ajith Kumar’s Aegan in late December 2007, reports indicated that Ajith Kumar will act in a film produced by Sivaji Productions directed by Gautham Menon. Three months later, it was confirmed that the project would go ahead as planned as soon as both, the director and the actor finished their respective projects.
The film, which was due to start its first schedule during June 2008, had been built up as the final instalment in Gautham Menon's police trilogy, following his two earlier ventures, Kaaka Kaaka and Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu; which Ajith Kumar was originally meant to be a part of. However other indications suggested that the film is the remake of the classic, Pudhiya Paravai starring Sivaji Ganesan, which Ganesan’s son, Prabhu, who is the producer for the project denied. The film earlier rumoured to be titled, Kanavugal Karpanaigal or Vaanam Kadandha Siragugal, was finalized with the title of Surangani, which was later abbreviated to Sura.[8] In January 2009, the film was reannounced by Prabhu. The story was subsequently changed and Saran was signed up as the film's director.[9] Ajith Kumar also apparently underwent an appearance change the same month, citing that it was to be used for his character in the film. In April 2009, the tagline "The Power Of Silence" was added to the film's title. The photo shoot session of Asal will commence on 4 May 2009, it was revealed by sources close to the film’s unit.
Asal is one of the first South Indian films that is going to be shown in Russia.[10]
Asal will not release for Pongal 2010.[11] The date that producer Ram Kumar is thinking about is January 26.[12] Remember a lot of his dad’s films the late thespian Sivaji Ganesan’s films used to release on Republic day.now news has confirmed dat ASAL is not releasing in republic day ..instesd they are planning on Feb 5 ..reason is due to release of many films on pongal.
Launch Pooja
The film Launched on Wednesday 8 April 2009[3], at Sivaji's family residence Annai Illam located at Sivaji Ganesan Salai. Super Star Rajinikanth launched the movie[13].
Casting
Following the announcement that Sivaji Productions, Ajith Kumar and Gautham Menon would come together, other technicians were added to the film. Menon’s usual apprentices, Harris Jayaraj was signed on as the music composer. Some doubted that Gautham's farewell from the project was because of their recently publicized partnership break-up after Vaaranam Aayiram. Harris, too, later walked out of the project due to his busy schedule with other films.[14] After approaching Yuvan Shankar Raja for the job, Bharadwaj was finally confirmed by Saran.[15] the music director, making Asal his fiftieth film as composer, who teams up with Saran again after their last film together being Vattaram in 2006. After Sivaji Productions considered directors including A. R. Murugadoss, Vishnuvardhan and A. L. Vijay for the film, they turned to Saran. As of April 2009, other confirmed film technicians have been revealed. Vivek Karunakaran, a fashion show worker in Paris, will design the costumes for Ajith Kumar and Sameera Reddy while Vairamuthu replaced Thamarai to write the film's songs. Virumaandi fame Prabakar will work as art director.[3]
Prabhu Ganesan, also co-producer for the film under Sivaji Productions, cast himself to play an important role in the film. Whilst, Gautham Menon selected Sameera Reddy, who had portrayed the lead female role in his previous film, Vaaranam Aayiram to star opposite Ajith Kumar in the film. Sameera appears along Ajith Kumar for the first time, despite previously being entitled to appear opposite him in Citizen, which eventually went ahead without her. Koena Mitra was confirmed an item number appearance in the film.[16] Mamta Mohandas was initially confirmed as the second heroine in Asal, but decided not to take the role.[17] Sneha and Bhavana were approached for the second heroine's role, however Sneha was unable to comply due to call sheet problems, so Bhavana was finalized[18]. Rajiv Krishna has confirmed that he will play a role in the film.[19] Other confirmed cast members are Pradeep Rawat (Ghajini villain), Keli Dorji (Lara Dutta's boy friend), Karen Miao Sapru, Adithya, Suresh[20], Sampath Raj,[6] Surendra Pal[5] and Yugi Sethu. Suhasini was later Confirmed she will pair up for Prabhu in the film.
