Background

Tropos Networks[1] was founded in 2000 and is a United States-based provider of IP broadband mesh network solutions for building utility distribution area networks for the smart grid and smart cities. Tropos systems aggregate communications from utilities for multiple applications with the goal of increasing operational efficiencies and reducing costs. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, the company has over 750 customers in more than 30 countries.

Tropos has an installed base of more than 800 customers in 30 countries around the world, including Avista,[2]Glendale Water & Power, Duncan, Oklahoma,[3] and Lafayette Utilities System. Investors include Benchmark Capital, Boston Millennia Partners, Cipio Partners, Duff Ackerman & Goodrich, Hanna Ventures, Integral Capital Partners and Voyager Capital. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is David Hanna of Hanna Ventures; board members: Curtis Feeny of Voyager Capital, Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital and Tom Ayers, president and CEO of Tropos Networks.

Tropos has been granted 30 patents and has an additional 30 pending.[4]

Technology

Utilities deploying smart grids use Tropos for building regional-scale distribution area communications networks covering hundreds to thousands of square miles. Tropos fulfills a key component needed for building Smart Grids—a private IP broadband network that creates a reliable and secure base upon which multiple demanding smart grid applications including distribution automation, substation security, and automated metering infrastructure (AMI) can be deployed. [5]

Additionally, Tropos technology is employed by municipalities to improve efficiencies of a broad range of city services including Intelligent Transportation Systems, automated meter reading (AMR), public safety, and video surveillance.

GridCom

Tropos’ GridCom network architecture for Smart Grid distribution area networks. It enables utilities to build a highly reliable and secure network foundation for aggregating communications for multiple applications and systems.

Products

Tropos Products

Tropos products are based upon the Tropos System Architecture, a decentralized, highly flexible approach utilizing industry standards. Each router makes coordinated intelligent routing and airtime management decisions in real-time, maximizing bandwidth and system performance by eliminating the latency and overhead associated with a centralized architecture. It eliminates single points of failure by automatically rerouting traffic around problems, minimizing downtime. Multi-layer standards-based security protects the network, data, and users, and Tropos products are Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certified. The Tropos System Architecture has been proven to scale from hundreds to thousands of routers participating in a single mesh network which can include both fixed and mobile nodes.

Each router includes one or more open-standards-based 802.11 a/b/g/n radios optimized for outdoor usage. The router enclosures are ruggedized and weatherized to withstand extreme conditions. Fixed and mobile Tropos routers can be used in any combination on a single network. Tropos Mesh OS The Tropos Mesh OS ships as an integral part of each Tropos router and was designed from the ground up to optimize throughput and reliability in a dynamic outdoor wireless environment. The Tropos Mesh OS creates a self-organizing and self-healing wireless mesh topology and intelligently selects the optimum path through the network. It leverages the router’s on-board intelligence to monitor and maximize performance, minimizing network congestion and adapting in real-time basis to interference and other variables common in an outdoor environment.

Network Management

Tropos’ network is designed to provide complete visibility and manageability of wireless Smart Grid networks, minimizing costs and complexity in all aspects of deployment, provisioning, operations, optimization. It is a powerful control and analysis tool, enabling network administrators to perform a range of critical functions including over-the-air confi guration and software updates; real-time end-to-end wireless network performance monitoring and statistical capture; data mining, trend analysis and client connectivity monitoring.
