Casting

In September 2011, producer A. M. Rathnam confirmed that he is working in a project with Ajith Kumar.[2] Initially, the producer wanted Anushka Shetty to do the role, but she can’t spare the required dates as she is busy with other Tamil films. Later Nayantara was confirmed as the female lead.[3] Next Vishnuvardhan approached Arya for another lead role. Thus collabrating with him for fourth time after Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal and Sarvam.[4] Yuvan Shankar Raja is scoring the music for this film.[5] Richa Gangopadhyay was Vishnu’s preferred choice for the second female lead.[6] Later Taapsee Pannu was selected for her role.[7] Ashwin Kakumanu, who played a cop in Ajith's earlier Mankatha, will be seen in a significant role in the movie.[8] It is also reported that Arvind Swamy and Prithviraj will play pivoted roles[9] and leading Telugu actors Nagarjuna, Ravi Teja and Jagapathi Babu will be seen in a cameo appearance in the film.[10][11] Mahesh Manjrekar will be essaying the role of a villain in the film.[12] Suman Ranganathan would be seen in the role of a reporter making her comeback.[13] Furthermore, the director approached Rana Daggubati for an important role in this film.[14] It is confirmed that Rana Daggubati will do a “special appearance”.[15] Rana took part in the shooting of this multi starrer flick in Mumbai in the third week of August.[16] Stephen Richter, the man who was responsible for the dangerous helicopter stunt in the Billa II climax is working in this film.[17] Sunil Babu who was roped in as the art director for this film has opted out of this project as he has some other important commitments. He was replaced by Vishwaroopam art director Ilaiyaraja.[18]

Filming

The film went on floor in Chennai at the Viswaroopa Sai temple on May 31, 2012.[19] The first schedule of this movie will start from June 2, 2012 with portions involving Ajith Kumar, Nayantara and Arya. The first shoot schedule is likely to continue till the end of June in Mumbai, based on the weather in the city,[20] but later cancelled due to monsoon and location was likely shifted to Bangalore[21] but shifted to Hyderabad to avoid the crowd.[22] Ajith will be possessing salt and pepper look from Mankatha and also hitting gym to build body in a good shape.[23] Vishnuvardhan in a recent interview opened up about the film that "I am planning to work on a drama, more on family action drama. It will not be very urban this time. I want to have an all-together new look for Ajith sir this time. I want to switch to hard core reality. I am giving too much of an information (guffaws!). Once I develop the script and the premise ready, the exact look will automatically fall in place. I am also collecting lots of visual references. Ajith sir is going to look stunning in my film and I am sure about it".[24]

Soundtrack

Yuvan Shankar Raja has roped in Kabilan Vairamuthu to pen lyrics for a song in this film.[25]
