Lars is a common male name in Nordic and German-speaking countries. In Sweden, people named Lars are commonly nicknamed Lasse.[1]

Lars is derived from the Roman name "Laurentius", which means "from Laurentum" or "crowned with laurel." Lawrence and Laurence are of the same origin.[citation needed]
