New word?
Does the word "reqreded" exist, or is it a typo? If real, will someone please define it for me? PKKloeppel (talk) 13:17, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- If it was a real word, I wonder what it would mean? As it is not, I changed it to "rewarded" which appears to be the sense intended, and given the article a proper copyedit. The original article had lots more such typos. Well spotted! Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 15:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Hope's faux pas.
The article states that: In 1798, however, whilst commanding HMS Alcmene, Hope made a serious faux pas, when he assumed that Admiral Nelson would have called off his passage to Egypt in the face of poor weather. He accordingly took the frigates under his command back to Gibraltar, thus denying Nelson his scouts at a pivotal point in the campaign and earning a furious rebuke from his commander.
Does anybody have a reference for this, and when exactly did it happen? I think Hope arrived in Aboukir Bay on the 13/08/1798. Was he supposed to be there earlier, in time for the Battle of the Nile perhaps?--Ykraps (talk) 08:53, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that this is fair. Certainly most reports put the blame elsewhere. When Nelson's squadron sailed from Gibraltar on 9th May, he had with him the Emerald, Terpichore and Bonne Citoyenne as well as the various ships of the line. However, these three escorts parted company from the rest of the squadron in a severe gale on 21st, south of the Hyères. Laird Clowes (Vol. 4, page 354) reports that "Unhappily, St Vincent, who supposed that the Emerald, Terpichore and Bonne Citoyenne were still with Nelson, omitted to send to his subordinate any more frigates".
- It is correct that the Emerald, Alcmène and Bonne Citoyenne finally joined the squadron on 13th August (and the Seahorse independently on 17th August) following the battle; whether Nelson expected them earlier, I'm not sure; but I don't think they were ever instructed to be there. Certainly Nelson constantly bemoaned his lack of frigates foir scouting purposes; his letter to St Vincent of 20th July (sent from Syracuse) says "Every moment I have to regret the Frigates having left me, to which must be attributed my ignorance of the movements of the Enemy" (Dispatches and Letters, Vol. 3 of the Nicolas edition, page 45); on the 23rd, in a letter to Sir William Hamilton (idem, page 48), he adds the bitter postscript "No Frigates ! - to which has been, and may again, be attributed the loss of the French Fleet"; and after the battle on 5th August he wrote a general letter "to the Captains of any Frigates Captain Berry may meet with", saying "I am, and have been, very much distressed for Frigates, and hope the Captains of them under my command, will use their utmost endeavours to join me", then adding where his squadron could most likely be found (idem, page 92). But there is no specific mention anywhere in the correspondence of any frigate or its captain by name in this connection. Rif Winfield (talk) 07:12, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. In that case, unless anyone objects, I think I will remove/rewrite that sentence.--Ykraps (talk) 09:35, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
