Oliver Proske (2015)

Oliver Proske (* 21 September 1971 in Johannesburg) is a German stage designer, industrial designer, exhibition designer, producer and managing director. In 1998 he founded the Berlin-based independent theatre company Nico and the Navigators together with his partner Nicola Hümpel.

Life

Oliver Proske studied industrial design at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg, where he was taught by Professor Dieter Rams, before going on to study at the Berlin University of the Arts.

As part of the theoretical thesis he completed in 2000 at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg, he created a free-form atlas to test mathematical observations concerning free-form dimensioning, which makes possible the comparability of forms in computer-aided styling.

In 1998 he and Nicola Hümpel founded the theatre company Nico and the Navigators at the Bauhaus Dessau; he has since created all of the company’s 25 stage designs. The company has been based in Berlin since 1999. Oliver Proske is also managing director of the company, which has been the recipient of institutional funding from the Senate of Berlin since 2007, and he has acted as technical director for over 200 guest performances in more than 50 cities worldwide.

As artists in residence at Berlin's Sophiensæle he and the company developed the Menschenbilder cycle from 1999-2005. The 2000 production Eggs on Earth, which was nominated for the Berliner Theatertreffen Award and the Friedrich Luft Prize, earned the troupe their international breakthrough. In 2006 the piece Wo Du nicht bist, with compositions by Franz Schubert, marked their entry into musical theatre. A series of further musical theatre productions was subsequently produced in collaboration with European co-producers, and included Anaesthesia with music by George Frideric Handel (2009) and Petite messe solennelle by Gioachino Rossini (2011). These alternated with collaborations between Nico and the Navigators and the Halle Opera House and the  Handel Festival for Orlando (2010), the Deutsche Oper Berlin for Mahlermania (2012), and the Munich Biennale in co-operation with the Residenz Theatre for Die Befristeten (2014). Die Stunde da wir zu viel voneinander wussten had its premiere at the Kampnagel in Hamburg in 2015. In spring 2016, he developed the stage design for Philippe Boesmans Reigen in Nicola Hümpel's new production at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, and in 2017 he did the same for the production SILENT SONGS into the wild at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He has given guest performances with Nico and the Navigators at, among others, the Vienna Festival, the Bregenz Festival, the Weimar Festival, Moscow's Dom Musiki, the Korean UIMT Festival, Paris's Opéra-Comique, the Festival Nuits de Fourvière in Lyon, the Opéra de Dijon, the Rouen Opera House, as well as the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg.

Alongside working with his own company, he has also developed stage designs for shows such as the 2011 Anhalt Theater production of Der Protagonist – Bajazzo and the Konzert für eine taube Seele performed in 2012 at the Puppentheater Halle. In addition he has designed various exhibitions, including Die Dinge der Welt (2008) at the Francke Foundations in Halle (a media installation presented in the style of the 300-year-old Wunderkammer as part of the Theater der Welt Festival) and the exhibition architecture for the 2012 sound installation Cicadas in Halle. He talks about his approach to design in lectures and workshops both in Germany and abroad.

Oliver Proske's best-known piece of industrial design is the Melampos lamp. It was produced by the ClassiCon company from 2001 to 2007.

In 2013 an illustrated book about his work with the company, An der Erde hängt der Mensch und an ihm der Himmel, was published by Theater der Zeit. In 2011 Oliver Proske and Nicola Hümpel were awarded the George Tabori Prize.
