Controversies
In April 2015, a student fired a gun within the commons area of North Thurston High School and was subsequently tackled to the ground by a teacher before being arrested. No injuries were reported.[1]
In November 2020, North Thurston Public Schools drew national attention for changing their classification of "students of color," referring to students of ethnic minority groups which have experienced "persistent opportunity gaps", to exclude Asian Americans, instead grouping Asian Americans with white students.[6]
As of May 2021, there is a public call to replace district leadership pointing to racist practices that discriminate against staff, students, and families of color.[7]
