Danny Beales is a British politician from Camden, who is the Labour Party candidate for the 2023 Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election; the seat previously held by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.[1]

Early life

Beales grew up in West London and was raised by his mother as a single parent. He moved house twice while a teenager, both times after his mother was made redundant from work, living for a while with his grandparents in Northampton, and then in a council house in the area. He benefitted from an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), allowing him to complete A-Levels. He joined the Labour Party around this time, frustrated by the financial difficulties his family faced.[2][3]

Political career

Beales studied politics and social policy at the London School of Economics. He went on to work in campaigning and communications with the Labour Party.[3] He was successfully elected in the 2014 Camden London Borough Council election and was re-elected at the next two subsequent council elections. During this time, Beales was principally responsible for building more council houses in Camden, as Camden Council's Cabinet Member for New Homes, Jobs and Community Investment, and was a governor at a local school.[4][5] He supported adding a pedestrian crossing in Camden with the transgender flag, the first of its kind in London. However this caused many local issues due to the cost, which impacted local toilets not being refurbished and women having to use men's toilets. [6]

In December 2022, Beales was selected as the Labour candidate for Uxbridge & South Ruislip, and quit his position at Camden to become the candidate at the by-election, which was announced less than a day after Johnson resigned.[7] [8] He began campaigning with the party's national campaigner, Shabana Mahmood.[9]

Beales is a keen supporter of ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) and it's expansion to outer London. He is also a close ally of Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

Views

Beales believes he has an advantage over Johnson in that he comes from tCamden and, unlike Johnson, would be able to dedicate himself to advice surgeries for his constituents.[10]

An opinion poll by Britain Predicts put Labour 11 points ahead in the constituency, suggesting it is possible for Beales to win the seat at the by-election, overturning a Conservative majority of over 7,000.[11]
