Early life
Lily-Rose Melody Depp[1] was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine,[4] west of Paris, on 27 May 1999.[4] She is the daughter of American actor Johnny Depp and French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis.[4] She has a younger brother, Jack (John Christopher Depp III).[5] French actress Alysson Paradis is her aunt.[6] She claims to have Native American ancestry through her father.[7]

Career
2014–2018: Early work in independent films and modeling
Depp made her acting debut in 2014, with a minor role in the horror comedy film Tusk.[10][11] In 2015, at age 16, Depp became a brand ambassador for French fashion house Chanel in a decision personally overseen by Karl Lagerfeld.[12] She has since ventured into fashion modeling, promoting the brand on the runway and in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Glamour, Elle, i-D, Wonderland, Love, Madame Figaro, W, and V.[13]
In 2016, Depp reprised her Tusk role in the spin-off Yoga Hosers.[14] The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016 to unfavorable critical reception.[15][16][17] She portrayed American dancer Isadora Duncan in The Dancer, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category. For her performance in the film, Depp was nominated for Most Promising Actress at the 42nd César Awards[18] and Most Promising Actress at the 22nd Lumières Awards.[19] She also appeared in the film Planetarium alongside Natalie Portman, who handpicked Depp to play her younger sister.[20][21] In that same year, Depp was made the face of Chanel's iconic fragrance Chanel No. 5 L'Eau.[22][23]
In 2018, Depp starred opposite Laurent Lafitte in Les Fauves (Savage).[24] The film was premiered in France in October 2018.[25] In the same year, Depp starred in A Faithful Man, directed by Louis Garrel and co-written by Oscar winner Jean-Claude Carrière.[26][27] The film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and released in France in December 2018.[28][29] She received her second nomination for Most Promising Actress at the 44th César Awards.[30]
2019–present: Transition to mainstream films and The Idol
In 2019, Depp appeared in the Netflix documentary short Period. End of Sentence. alongside Priyanka Chopra. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 91st Academy Awards.[31] In April 2019, Depp was nominated for the Prix Romy Schneider.[32] She starred alongside her aunt Alysson Paradis in the French independent short film Quel Joli Temps Pour Jouer Ses Vingt-ans (My Last Lullaby), in which she played a young woman grieving the loss of a grandfather.[33] The film won Best Picture at the 2019 New York Film Awards, and Best Narrative Short at the 2019 Los Angeles Film Awards.[34][35] Mor Cohen of the New York Film Awards wrote, "Great performances by all actors, led by [Depp], who were so nuanced and intuitive that it was hard to remember these are fictional characters and not real people".[36] For her performance in My Last Lullaby, Depp won the Best Actress at the 2019 Los Angeles Film Awards.[37] Les Brandt for the Los Angeles Film Awards noted, "Depp displays sonic waves of artistic expression with her eyes and internal work that was so subtle yet massively powerful and at such a young age was an exciting thing to watch."[38] In the historical epic war film The King, Depp appeared as Catherine of Valois opposite Timothée Chalamet as Henry V.[39] The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2019, and was released on Netflix in November 2019.[40][41] Of her performance, Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote, "[Depp] makes her presence felt, for perhaps the first time ever, as Catherine of Valois, whose delicate worldliness matches Henry’s", while Rory O'Connor of The Film Stage called it "an excellent cameo".[42][43]
In 2021, Depp appeared in the opioid epidemic crime thriller Crisis (originally titled Dreamland) alongside Gary Oldman, Armie Hammer, Evangeline Lilly and Michelle Rodriguez.[44][45] The film was released in the United States to mixed critical reception on February 26, 2021.[46] She also appeared in Neil Burger's science-fiction thriller Voyagers and the Christmas horror comedy Silent Night.[47][48][49] Depp starred alongside George MacKay in Nathalie Biancheri's psychological drama Wolf.[50] The film premiered at TIFF on September 17, 2021 to mixed critical reception.[51][52]
In 2023, Depp made her television debut starring in the HBO drama series The Idol alongside Canadian singer The Weeknd. The series premiered on May 22, 2023 at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with highly unfavorable reception from critics for its graphic sexual content and themes.[53][54] On her performance, TIME wrote that Depp "brings some tentative gravity to all the sordidness".[55] The series began airing on HBO and Max on June 4, 2023. HBO announced the show's cancellation after one season on August 28, 2023.[56]
Depp is set to reprise her Tusk and Yoga Hosers role in Moose Jaws.[57] She will also have three upcoming movie projects including Bruno Dumont's The Empire, A24's erotic drama The Governesses and Robert Eggers’ gothic horror Nosferatu.[58][59][60]
Personal life
Depp is the goddaughter of novelist François-Marie Banier and singer Marilyn Manson.[61] Since her birth, she has been the subject of tabloid and media reporting, including birthdays,[62][63] attendance at society events,[64] and reviews of her fashion choices.[65] She is bilingual in English and French[66] and has U.S. and French citizenship.[67] She dropped out of high school in 2016 to focus on her acting career.[66] She has struggled with and recovered from anorexia.[68][69][70]
In August 2015, she posed for iO Tillett Wright's Self-Evident Truths Project, stating she fell somewhere "on the LGBTQA spectrum".[71][72] She later clarified she was simply making a statement on defining oneself, not on her own sexuality.[73][74][75]
In 2016, although Depp was not of legal voting age, she supported Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[76] In February 2017, both she and her mother Vanessa Paradis were photographed for Our City of Angels magazine; proceeds from its sale were donated to Planned Parenthood.[77]
Depp has been living in an apartment in New York since the late 2010s.[9][78] Since January 2023, she has been in a relationship with rapper and singer Danielle Balbuena, also known as 070 Shake.[79] This has been the only relationship that Depp has publicly acknowledged.[80] Depp confirmed the relationship in an Instagram post on May 11, 2023.[79]
