Peter Filopoulos is an Australian sports administrator, CEO, and board member in the sports and entertainment industries.

He is known for his strategic, commercial, and transformative leadership in professional clubs, national and state sporting associations, major stadiums, and technology and major event organisations.

Education

Filopoulos holds a bachelor of business from Deakin University and has completed the FIFA Executive Program.

Career

South Melbourne Football Club

In the 1990s, Filopoulos served as the General Manager of South Melbourne Football Club during a period of significant achievements. Under his management, with Ange Postecoglou as the team's Manager, South Melbourne won championships in 1997/98 and 1998/99. The club also qualified for the inaugural FIFA World Club Cup in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, competing against renowned teams like Manchester United and Vasco De Gama. Filopoulos played a crucial role in the development of South Melbourne's purpose-built football stadium at Lakeside Stadium, a significant milestone in the club's history..[1][2][3]

Australian Football League (AFL) Experience

Filopoulos spent eight years in the Australian Football League (AFL).[4] He worked with Hawthorn Football Club as the Corporate Sales and Marketing Manager from 1999 to 2002, where he was instrumental in developing and executing sales and marketing strategies. From 2002 to 2007, he served as the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Communications at North Melbourne Football Club, playing a key role in the club's commercial and communications endeavours.[5]

Marvel Stadium

In 2007, he appointed as Director of Sales, Marketing and Communications of Marvel Stadium, Filopoulos was responsible for overseeing significant revenue growth and the development of the cutting edge 'Connected Stadium' project which saw the extensive development of high-density Wi-Fi and digital transformation of the stadium leading to a much-improved fan engagement experience at the venue.[6]

Swimming Australia

In 2014, As Chief Commercial Officer, he rebranded the Australian Swim Team to the Australian “Dolphins” Swim Team, secured major sponsorships, and developed comprehensive commercial and participation strategies leading to significant sponsorship and broadcast outcomes.[7]

Perth Glory Football Club

In 2015, Filopoulos was appointed as the CEO of Perth Glory Football Club, a professional football club based in Perth, Western Australia, competing in the Australian A-League competition.[8] Filopoulos' leadership as CEO involved strategic management, revenue growth, and guiding Perth Glory through various challenges, including a transformative four-year strategy and significant membership increases.[9][10][11][12]

Football Victoria

in May 2018, Filopoulos was appointed CEO of Football Victoria, where he spearheaded the Football talks strategic plan and facilitated substantial growth in participation and revenue. His tenure is marked by driving the ambitious Football Victoria Facilities Strategy and government advocacy which lead to securing over $400M in government funding for grassroots football and infrastructure projects including the state of the $116M state of the art Home of the Matildas at La Trobe University which officially opened in July 2023.[13][14][15]

Football Australia

In August 2020, He appointed as the Head of Marketing, Communications, and Corporate Affairs at Football Australia, Filopoulos has significantly contributed to the growth and success of Australian football. He has enhanced the profile of Football Australia, the Matildas and Socceroos, played a crucial role in driving the Legacy ’23 plan which led to securing substantial government funding, and led the successful marketing and communications strategy for FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand campaign and award-winning digital and fan engagement initiatives.[16][17][18] Filopoulos is also a director of Vicsport.[19]

Personal life

Filopoulos, a native of Melbourne, Australia, was born in the city to Greek immigrant parents who moved to Australia in the 1960s. [20]He completed his education at Melbourne High School and later graduated with a bachelor of business degree from Deakin University.
