GNAA

(Summary: SPUI informed me that the form of the name of the GNAA wasn't patterned after the names of copyright industry trade groups.)

Blast from the Past!

Damian! I last saw you fourteen years ago, at Weisser Park Elementary! Do you remember Joe Brennan from the Knowledge Master Open Team (aka "Geek Squad?") We went down to Lexington, KY with Mr. Schott, Kraig Kumfer and Ross ___ (his last name escapes me at the moment) to compete in that other academic tournament (the name of which also escapes me). Wow, that was more than half a lifetime ago! What are you up to these days? Drop me a line sometime here or at my user page. Take care!

BTW, did you ever get around to writing that novel of yours...? Rickyrab | Talk 15:29, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I lost interest. --Damian Yerrick 16:25, 7 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. A long time ago (back in 2001!!) you made an edit to the then-nascent Calvin and Hobbes article. I wonder if, despite the intervening years, you might be able to provide the source for the information about Custom Vehicle Graphics. I'd like the article either to provide a reference for that fact, or for that part to be removed if it cannot be verified. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I wish I could. I got it from the company's web site, which apparently no longer exists. I'll genericize the reference. --Damian Yerrick 01:56, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

By the way, if you hadn't noticed, Calvin and Hobbes made it to Featured Article status a while back. It's regressed somewhat since, but it's still something I hope you can feel pleased about, having contributed to it in the early stages. Alanyst 21:26, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

labialization

Hi Damian, I think if you look in a mirror and say sip, then ship, you'll notice some lip rounding with ship that you don't get with the other. I'd be interested to hear if you don't; I'm under the impression that light labialization of sh etc. is fairly universal in English (and perhaps western Europe). kwami 2005 July 3 07:01 (UTC)

I don't see nor feel any labialization of my own esh sounds. --Damian Yerrick 3 July 2005 14:40 (UTC)

Hello! Please consider adding yourself to Category:Indiana Wikipedians. Thanks! Kurt Weber 7 July 2005 02:51 (UTC)

Damian, could you explain what's going on with Flood fill? I don't dispute the correctness of the "east-west optimization" — I removed it only because I think it makes the article a little source code–heavy. But I really can't figure out what you mean by "Tetris" and "Columns" — it doesn't seem to be what a lot of other Wikipedians mean by the same names. See Talk:Flood fill. --Quuxplusone 01:10, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Margaret Keane Imitation

I removed the link from the word "imitated" to "Precious Moments" you've made in the article for Margaret Keane. One, because imitation is in the eye of the beholder. Two, even if Ms. Keane's work was purposely imitated, surely Precious Moments is not the only imitator. I think the article on kitsch does a good job of linking them together. --Emana 21:48, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template:SNES

I notice you changed the image at Template:SNES because the previous image wasn't a SNES controller. I just wanted to point out that the template doesn't actually have anything to do with the SNES, just the Nintendo Wikiproject. That being said, I don't really care what image is there, as long as it's not claiming fair use. Pagrashtak 05:56, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Word Jaggies?

Thanks for updating that old "anti-cabal" image on my talkpage to the new "there is no cabal" image that superceded it. I have a question though: what on Earth do you mean by "Be careful with the use of the word jaggies"? ~CS 23:03, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For each use of the old image, I took a sentence near the use of the image and replaced the operative word with "jaggies". --Damian Yerrick () 02:29, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Price Is Right

A NEW CAR!!!!!111 It's yours if the cite is right.

Hey...I'm the one who made public the existence of unaired episodes of The Price Is Right. I'd like to provide citations for them, but I'm really not sure how...the only public documentaion of the episodes' existence is in things that I wrote and thus don't feel comfortable adding as references, and the only other way to prove it would be to actually acquire CBS Programming Practices's files on the episodes (which I'm pretty sure I theoretically could do, but it'd be a lot more trouble than it's worth). Some suggestions, maybe? -TPIRFanSteve 03:18, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Everything on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable. Gather evidence of the unaired episodes' existence, publish the evidence on your fan site, report it in Wikinews for practice, and then shop it around to various reliable sources. --Damian Yerrick () 05:46, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

definition of polycube

Hi,

I saw your edit on pentomino. I understood that polycube is what each piece can be 3D. The puzzule here is by pieces 2D configured cubes. AIEA 01:33, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In other words, it's the subset of pentacubes that correspond to the pentominoes. That's what I was trying to get at. See Talk:Tetromino#Tetracubes where 208.58.249.130 desired more rigor in the distinction between tetrominoes and tetracubes. --Damian Yerrick () 02:25, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. What IP user 208.. says is correct. And the 3D pentomino puzzule uses subset of pentacubes. Your new revision makes less confusing. Thanks. AIEA 21:34, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The image was used to illustrate the Nintendo DS itself. There are already a few free images of just the Nintendo DS. Help Prevent Article Deletion: Religious Perspectives on Dinosaurs

Hello, I'm leaving you this message because I notice you've made at least one significant edit to the Wikipedia article Religious perspectives on dinosaurs. The article has recently been nominated for deletion from Wikipedia, and there is considerable support for that position.

I'm hoping you'll help me support the continued existence of the Religious perspectives on dinosaurs article by registering a keep vote on the article's request for deletion page. The article contains some good information, and represents an unobtrusive way to present notable minority viewpoints about dinosaurs that cannot reasonably be elaborated on in the parent article. It shouldn't be deleted simply because the viewpoints it presents aren't "scientific."

To viewers at home: Might this be recruiting meatpuppets?

Are we going in the right direction?

Since I don't like brutals RVs and in fact your contribution is true (so this is a bit controversial), I decided to drop you a few lines. I write about the new addition about voxels on the heightmap page. I am unsure it is a good idea to consider this. I see this mainly as opening a can of worms. I was considering removing the thing (or maybe reword it in another paragraph?) for a few reasons:

  1. Are voxels necessary? I am not sure defining a heightmap in function of another "extraneus" term is good. By accepting a link with voxels, we suggest the reader to take a note on the concept. Unless strictly necessary, I would try to be minimal.
  2. What's the abstraction level? Mathematically speaking a heightmap is a 2D->nD function. It can also be seen as an array of pixels, values, attributes and now voxels. This isn't really a problem with your contribution but more with the article in general. While we are here, we may get a point on this.
  3. Are those really voxels? There's obviously some reference to a space subdivision but the relation to voxels does not seems to be trivial. I am not sure it would work with float heightmaps (fractional voxels? no way!).

I also do not understand from where you take the three dimensions of the voxels. In a certain sense, the heightmap sample value will be the height but when it comes to widht and depth that's another business since the sample is applied to points. Intuitively, the space partition (again, assuming it's non-fractional) will be the voxel "grid" but those voxels won't really exist since we care about the corners only. It's again a problem with abstraction level. The idea of thinking at "voxels" seems just a bit overkill... in fact it seems more rational to express all the coordinates in "terrain space" and xform it to real geometry space. Although the difference is mainly on expressing the terms, this cannot be left out.

While we are here, thank you for your work on the Wiki! I wish you an interesting new year!

No CPU!

I'm not going to quibble at the change you made to PostScript ('cause your point is basically correct) but if you go back far enough, you'll find that the LA30 dot matrix printer built by Digital Equipment Corporation really didn't contain anything you'd call a CPU or even microcontroller; it was just a bunch of random logic strung out in such a way as to realize a dot matrix printer. But by the time of its successor, the LA36 (ca. 1976 or so), there was a real microcontroller in place, executing a recognizable microprogram out of ROM, using an ALU, RAM, and I/O resources, etc.

Mirrorsoft and Tetris

The claim about Mirrorsoft and Tetris may not be as wrong as it first appears. Mirrorsoft was a company owned by the late and somewhat unlamented tycoon Robert Maxwell. Mirrorsoft and Spectrum Holobyte succeeded in acquiring the rights to Tetris, although there was subsequently controversy over whether Robert Stein was legally entitled to them. The IBM-PC version of Tetris was released by Mirrorsoft and Spectrum Holobyte, as this page from the BBC website based on the television documentary shows. [2] --Ianmacm 21:47, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware of the roles of Andromeda and Mirrorsoft in the history of Tetris (see Tetriswiki:History), but the "Microsoft Tetris" column of the color table refers to the Windows 3.x version of Tetris included with Microsoft Entertainment Pack. Mirrorsoft never imposed any color assignments on its licensees, unlike The Tetris Company since 2001 (see Tetriswiki:Tetris Guideline). --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 22:39, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re. your edit summaries, you may well be right, but it's not something I'm aware of. Could you point me to where the guidance is on placing images below headings, not above them. I've always assumed it was optional, depending on other factors. Thanks. Tyrenius 00:09, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For one thing, you might be right, per WP:MOS#Images. But for another, a blind person using a speech reader would hear the image's caption before the heading, which would be confusing. Don't float an image on the left unless you have to. --Damian Yerrick (talk | stalk) 03:15, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you raise this on the MOS talk page to get a consensus for implementing it. Until that happens you can't insist that it is done. Tyrenius 00:28, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Damian Yerrick - It's a good idea to post about WikiProject:Law. This area of WP articles needs a good bit of work. Unfortunately, experts on other jurisdictions are few and far between. Sorry to be a bit irritable about it -- I've lately been a little frustrated with exactly this issue of people putting "globalize" tags on articles that are, by definition, US-based topics. Unfortunately a lot of folks don't understand the difference between legal theories and concepts on the one hand, and legal doctrines -- which are inherently local and specific -- on the other hand. Cheers, --Lquilter 16:28, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Then what's the tag for "we need a new article about the theory that corresponds to this local doctrine"? Should I just toss it up at Requested Articles? --Damian Yerrick (serious | business) 16:47, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I thought you wrote on the talk page that you were planning to post it at Requested Articles? ... I'm not sure that we need a tag on the Nominative use article; the issue we're talking about isn't a problem with that article. It's really that we see a gap, or actually we wonder if there is a gap, in the general topics. Maybe just post it at Talk:WikiProject Law, if you're not actually sure there's a topic to write about. (I'm not certain of it, by any means.) --Lquilter 17:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Serious buisness

Well, there's no reason to link to a one line 'essay', really; links from the mainspace are usually reserved for policies, guidelines and other heavily used project space pages. We don't normally include topics on disambig pages that don't have their own articles, so the last one can go. And we don't need to link to Wictionary for "Serious" and "Business" individually; those links would belong on the articles for the individual words. -- Vary | Talk 17:12, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
