Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity (ソニックライダーズ シューティングスターストーリー, Sonikku Raidāzu: Shūtingu Sutā Sutōrī, lit. Sonic Riders: Shooting Star Story) is a hoverboard-racing video game for the Wii and PlayStation 2. Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is the sequel to Sonic Riders.
Story
Sonic hears of a legend regarding an artifact known as the "Shooting Star", an item that can control gravity. However, the Babylon Rogues, Sonic's well known rivals, are also after the legendary artifact. This sets off a war between who gets the artifact, now leading them to settle their dispute by having an Extreme Gear competition.[2]
Gameplay
The upcoming 2008 game introduces new abilities most characters use throughout the entire game. By gaining gravity points through tricks and technical challenges, players will enter a zero-gravity zone and be able to perform two new moves: Gravity Control: which is the ability to get fast boost for a while (similar to Chaos Control in Shadow the Hedgehog). You can use this move by pressing the 1 button. Gravity Dive is a dive to the ground and back up while flying not on your board that hurtles cars and other objects into the air from the path and allows players to grind on them for more speed. This is done by shaking the Wii Remote rapidly. Gravity Warp allows players to create a black hole that sucks them through for a speed boost and for other players get sucked in and stay sucked in the hole for a while. [3]
Along with the returning characters from the previous installment, new playable racers, hover boards, bikes, and futuristic hover crafts will be available. The vehicles can eventually be upgraded. Sega has confirmed that there are 40 ways to upgrade each vehicle. They can even be upgraded during a race.[4]
So far sixteen tracks have been confirmed to be playable, eight worlds with two tracks in each.
Upgrading System
In Sonic Riders the upgrading system followed the rules, gain rings, get attack power-ups. In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity you will use a new method called Gear Change. Once you gain a certain amount of rings, your gear will gain an upgrade. Each gear has three upgrades and can be upgraded during a race via the A button. Some upgrades include modifying your Extreme Gear's look, higher top speed, an increased Gravity Points Gauge, and character type specific upgrades. Such as the ability to grind as a Speed character, or the ability to fly through Air Rings scattered throughout the stage as a Fly character.
Versus Mode
In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity there are two new modes added to the game: Survival Mode and Survival Ball. Survival Mode entails each player to use gravity in certain spots of the level to slam objects into opponents. Survival Ball mode is, simply put, a football game on Extreme Gear. You score points by throwing a ball into a goal. No news yet has been said for that if Zero gravity will have Wi-fi online play yet.
