SRM University
Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University, popularly known as SRM University is a co-educational private university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The university has four campuses in Tamil Nadu at Kattankulathur, Kancheepuram district, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Trichy and one in Modinagar, near Delhi. Previously functioning under Anna University, as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed SRMIST (SRM Institute of Science and Technology) and then eventually called SRM University.
- Awards and Rankings
SRM University at Chennai was rated by the Times of India in an Education Times-Gfk Mode study as the No.1 private engineering university in India [1]. It was also ranked as the top university in India in the multiple streams category viz., engineering and medicine in the same survey. SRM Medical was ranked as the third-best private medical university in India[2]. In 2009 the university was awarded a "Managerial Excellence award" by the Madras Management Association (MMA)[3][4]
- History
The beginnings of the college can be traced back to 1968. The Valliammai Society was founded by Mr T.R.Pachamuthu. He started a primary school called Florence Nightingale School (now the SRM Nightingale School). From there onwards, there was no looking back. The SRM Group now has several institutions and organizations under its belt. A few noted institutions are as follows. SRM University, Valliammai Engineering college, SRM Polytechnic college , Valliammai Polytechnic college, SRM Medical college and hospital, SRM dental college, SRM school of management, SRM school of journalism, SRM institute of catering and hotel management,Easwari Engineering college, Geetha Constructions, SRM Hotels, SRM Printers, SRM Benefit Fund Ltd., SRM Systems and Software, SRM Easwari Travels and Tours India(P) Ltd., Blossom Infotech, etc.

The university has 2 campus sections-Main Campus & Annexe Campus, covering 38 blocks, spread over 250 acres. The Indian Bank,The City Union Bank, The SRM Hotel (a Three-Star hotel), which includes swimming pool and bar facilities, and the Royal Inn Restaurant are located in the campus at various locations. The various blocks within SRMIST include, SRM General Hospital, SRM Medical College, SRM Kattankulathur Dental College, the PG Block, the Hi-Tech Block, the Main Block, the Mechanical Block, the Mech PG Block, the Electrical Sciences Block, the Computer Science Block, the Biotech block, IT Park(15 floors), an Auditorium(4500 seating capacity), MBA block, MBA library along with a Central Library with an Internet Cafe and a Cafeteria as well. There are also about half a dozen hostels, some of which are the K.R.S Hostel, Medical College Mens and Women's Hostel the UG Hostel, the PG Hostel, Meenakshi Women's Hostel, International Hostel. Work is also going on on the construction of a University Building of 15 floors in which already the Central Library of 4 floors has been opened. Work is being done towards the completion by the end of 2009. A Multipurpose Indoor Stadium with an expenditure of around Rs.17.6 crore has been proposed and the ground work has been started by Shri Abhinav Bindra last year when SRM University offered a Doctorate to him

SRM Polythenic college was established on 1996. The SRM Polythenic College is a unit of the SRM Group of Educational Institutions, sponsored by the Valliammai Society. The Valliammai Society was founded by Thiru. T. R. Pachamuthu, a well-known educationist, in the name of his mother Tmt. R.Valliammai.

Administration
This college is administrated by team of academicians and professionals. The college administration is ably assisted by Thiru. P. Ravi as the Co.chairman, Prof. P. Sathyanarayanan as vice-chairman, Tmt. Eswari Pachamuthu as the Treasurer and Dr.V.R. Sivakumar as Secretary under the guidance of Founder and Chairman Thiru T. R. Pachamuthu.
Management
The college has been established in 10 acres in 67534 sqm built-up areas to accommodate the classes and 8 laboratories in 506 sqm in a beautiful green environment easily accessible by road and rail with fully modernized equipments and 63 computers to train the students to cater to the present job requirements.
The Valliammai Society runs several educational institutions under the S.R.M.(Sri Ramasamy Memorial) Group,named after his father, Thiru.Ramasamy.Thiru.Pachamuthu, the Chairman, S.R.M. Group of Institutions, beginning his career as a teacher, now serves the community as a Chancellor, dedicating his life to the cause of education.Thiru. Pachamuthu, Chairman of the Valliammai Society is ably assisted by Thiru.P.Ravi as the Co-Chairman, Thiru P.Sathyanarayanan as the Vice-Chairman, Dr.R.Shivakumar as the Secretary and Tmt. Easwari Pachamuthu as the Treasurer of the Society,The Valliammai Society commenced its educational activities with a humble beginning in 1969 by starting a Primary School in the name of Florence Nightingale and upgrading the same to the status of Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the year 1981. In 1984, S.R.M. ventured into higher education with the launch of the Valliammai Polytechnic. The year 1985 saw the birth of the S.R.M. Engineering College, one of the most prestigious Institutions in Engineering and Technology and also the flagship Institutions of the group, encompassing all disciplines of Technical Education.
During 1992-93 the S.R.M. Group ventured into Medical Education and started S.R.M. College of Nursing and S.R.M. College of Pharmacy . During 1993-94 two more Medical Institutions namely S.R.M. School of Nursing and S.R.M. College of Physiotherapy were added. During the same year, the Group entered into Hotel Management Education. The S.R.M. Institute of Hotel Management was started in 1993 , having two campuses, one at Chennai and the other at Tiruchirapalli . The greatest advantage that this Institution offers to its students is the benefit of a deluxe.
Star Hotel attached to each campus of this Institute. During 1993-94 S.R.M. Arts & Science College was added to the S.R.M. Groups of Institutions. In 1995, the Group launched the S.R.M. Dental College with a full-fledged Dental Hospital attached to the College. In 1996 the Valliammai Polytechnic received the much-needed relief with the launch of a sister Institution, the S.R.M. Polytechnic. During 1996-97 Thiru. Pachamuthu opened another Engineering College in the name of his wife and called it as Easwari Engineering College . In the same year S.R.M. College of Occupational Therapy was added to the Group of Medical Educational Institutions. During 1997-98 the group made an entry into North India with the launch of the S.R.M. Institute of Management and Technology in Delhi. In 1999 the Valliammai Society added a third Engineering College in the name of Valliammai Engineering College to the S.R.M. Group of Institutions.

Placement Cell
The Dept of Placement and Career Guidance works in seeking and sequencing campus interviews for the students. The department caters to hone the students’ communication & interview skills. Each campus interview creates a ripple effect on the growth of placement.It is to be mentioned that it is a unique system of SRM Group, a training division functions separately which concentrates on training the students according to the demand of corporates, which is not included in the regular syllabus.
