It's estimated that ca. 30,000 Azeri volunteers have served in German units during the Second World War.

For these purposes National Committee headed by Muhammed Israfil-bey have been created. Azerbaijan was also represented in the so-called Caucasian People's Council by Abbas Bey Atam-Alibekov.

Azeri SS regiments have worn a blue-red-blue sleeve ensigns with a crescent and a five-pointed star and "ASERBEIDSCHAN" inscription over the ensign while Azeri soldiers of the so-called East Legions (Ostlegionen) had a chlorine edging on collar and sleeve, surrounding the emblem. On March 27, 1945 a unit called Waffengruppe "Aserbeidschan" was created.
