Abbreviations: points and spaces

The letters in acronyms and initialisms are generally not separated by points or spaces (GNP, NORAD, OBE, GmbH). Points and spaces that were traditionally required have now dropped out of usage (PhD is now preferred over Ph.D. and Ph. D.).

The Ürümqi Barn"star"
Thanks for all your work maintaining the article July 2009 Ürümqi riots during its time on the main page. This has been a difficult and thankless task, working at a frenetic pace for 4 days straight so far (I, for one, have been getting very little sleep), and it's only been thanks to coordinated efforts and discussion from numerous editors that the article has been kept as neutral and informative as possible. This is the most collaboration I've done, with the largest number of editors at once, since I have joined Wikipedia, and I think the results are showing; while it's not perfect, when my friends and family ask me about what's going on in Urumqi, I have been more comfortable recommending this article than any other source. The work is far from over, but now that this article is off the main page I think it's finally time to thank the editors Seb az86556, Colipon, Jim101, Ohconfucius, Benlisquare, Simonm223, and Jinhuili for all their contributions; while we had disagreements, I think each of these editors has been particularly active and has made real efforts to improve the article.rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 20:07, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

What I do

I do cleanups, and I'm not afraid to remove large quantities of text which are not relevant or compliant with WP policies and guidelines. I believe that if there's something worth saying, it's worth being brief and to the point. We are here to write an encyclopaedia, not a novel.

There are plenty of articles out there which have grown organically, through different editors dumping text in. I take all the content, sift through it, review what the sources are and what they say, rework it, giving it structure and focus. I often get spurred to look for more sources in the course of the rewrite. I treat all articles alike, regardless of whether they are of controversial topics or no — what I mean is, Ceteris paribus, provided I'm equally interested in two articles. Examples include:

My record speaks for itself (see my list of contributions). I'm interested in a wide range of subject matter, of which Falun Gong has proven to be the most challenging. I am not interested in partisan bickering of whether FG was being persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party or whether "Falun Gong Is a Cult". Following some nasty experiences, ranted about here, I stopped editing them; I resumed in August 2009 when the filibustering had abated. My personal objective is[Edited: was] to take these controversial articles to Featured Article status. With some help, one already made the grade. However, due to the excessive tolerance/indulgence (or should I say, 'appeasement') of disruption by Wikipedia - in my view, of course - of these same disruptive Falun Gong editors, I once again stopped editing any article directly related to Falun Gong in early 2010. These shenanigans have left emotional scars such that I don't expect to want to click on one of those articles ever again.

Edit counts

While editing, I make small and large edits; I may leave a trail of twenty small consecutive edits to an article, or one large one – it depends on what mode I'm in. I am more likely to make a string of 10+ small edits when I am focussed on detailed copyediting of a subject that has grabbed my attention. I always try leaving an accurate edit summary with my reasoning. My first edit to any article, whether drive-by or otherwise, is likely to be a script-based MOS audit. As I often gnome, using scripts, I work on a large number of articles – these are usually modern subjects because this is where most of the dates and dated citations are in our encyclopaedia. Total edit count in the userbox below include only article space edits.

To me, edit counts do not mean anything – mirroring that maxim "size isn't everything". It is a poor indicator quality. However, some editors use edit counts as some sort of a benchmark, and I have a userbox as a service to others who might be interested. Of course, if you have issues with the quality of my edits, whether to do with my copyediting or improvements to my scripts, comments are always welcome on my talk page.

Contributions towards Good Articles (in no particular order)

As of the 13 September issue, I have joined the Wikipedia:Signpost team as copyeditor.

Deletions

I would classify myself as a 'deletionist'. I don't believe that this encyclopaedia should be all-inclusive. Certainly we should not make room for subjects which fewer than a small handful of people would be interested in. I loathe self-promotion, or any blatant promotion in general. I will unhesitatingly put such articles up for deletion. I will generally notify the author, but will not bother notifying in the case of single purpose accounts whose unabashed spam I am nominating for speedy deletion. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Scripting

I believe in the importance in having a strong Manual of Style, and believe that the tasks lend themselves well to (semi-)automation. In June 2010, I started my first serious attempt at creating a script. Since then, I have developed a battery of scripts that I use to render compliance with the MOS. I have written scripts to

I have also reworked and adapted a script written by Lightmouse (talk · contribs) to align date formats and correct style aberrations for dates and units of measure.

I now have a number of Regex scripts:
