The National Measurement Institute, Australia (NMI) is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement and is currently administered within the Australian Government's Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

History

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) was created in 2004 from an amalgamation between the National Measurement Laboratory, the National Standards Commission and the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories. [1] On 1 July 2010, NMI assumed responsible for trade measurement under a national system. [2]

Role

NMI is responsible for the development and maintenance of standards of measurement, reference materials and reference techniques for all of Australia's units and standards of measurement including peak primary standards of measurement to measurements made at the domestic trade level.

NMI provides advice on measurement to the National Association of Testing Authorities, Standards Australia and the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand.

The Chief Executive Officer and Chief Metrologist is Dr. Laurie Besley.[3]
