Loona, stylized as LOOΠΔ (Korean: 이달의 소녀; RR: Idalui Sonyeo; lit. "Girl of the Month") is an upcoming South Korean girl group, created by Blockberry Creative (Korean: 블록베리 크리에이티브), a subsidiary of Polaris Entertainment, set to debut in 2018. Each month, from October 2016 to March 2018, a new member or sub-unit is revealed through the release of a single album or extended play, introducing them to the group. After eighteen months, with the project completed, all twelve members will debut as one group.[1]

History

Pre-debut project

On September 28, 2016, Blockberry Creative released a teaser for the first music video, HeeJin's "ViViD". On October 2, South Korean company Blockberry Creative announced through Naver that they would be debuting their first girl-group through an 18-month long pre-debut project.[2] Following this announcement, teasers were released for the first member, HeeJin,[3] as well as the teaser for an additional music video for the acoustic mix of "ViViD", set in Paris, France. On October 4, the music video for "ViViD" and its accompanying acoustic mix were released.[4]

On October 28, the second member, HyunJin, was revealed.[5] On November 10, HyunJin's debut single "Around You" was released in a 10-minute short film format music video. Six days later, the music video for HeeJin and HyunJin's collaboration song "I'll Be There", filmed in Tokyo, was released, along with the official music video for "Around You".[6]

On December 3, the third member, HaSeul, was revealed.[7] On December 11, the music video teaser for "Let Me In" was released, revealing HaSeul's music video to have been filmed in Iceland. On December 14, the music video teaser for HeeJin, HyunJin, and HaSeul's collaboration Christmas song "The Carol" was released, and the music video was revealed to have been filmed in London. On December 15, the music videos for "Let Me In" and "The Carol" were released.[8]

On January 4, 2017, the fourth member, YeoJin, was revealed.[9] On January 12, the music video teaser for YeoJin's debut single, "Kiss Later" was released. The following days a teaser for HeeJin and HyunJin's second single, "My Sunday", and a teaser for HaSeul and YeoJin's first single "My Melody" was revealed, both music videos were filmed in Taipei. The official music video for YeoJin's "Kiss Later" was released on January 16, followed by HeeJin and HyunJin's "My Sunday" on January 17, and finally HaSeul and YeoJin's "My Melody" on January 18.[10]

On February 13, the fifth member, ViVi, was revealed.[11] Loona's first sub-unit, LOOΠΔ 1/3, consisting of HeeJin, HyunJin, HaSeul and new member, ViVi,[12] released the extended play, Love&Live, and accompanying single of the same name on March 13.[13] The music video for the title track was revealed to be filmed in New Zealand and Hong Kong. The sub-unit officially began promoting from March 12, with promotions beginning on SBS's Inkigayo.[14]

On April 5, it was confirmed that ViVi would be the next to release a single album.[15] Her album was released on April 17, featuring HaSeul and future member, JinSoul. On April 23, LOOΠΔ 1/3's repackaged mini-album "Love&Evil" was announced with a teaser for the single, "Sonatine"; it was released on April 27.[16]

On May 15, the sixth member, Kim Lip, was revealed.[17] Kim Lip's single album was released on May 23 with its lead single, "Eclipse".[18]

On June 13, the seventh member, JinSoul, was revealed.[19] JinSoul's single album was released on June 26 with the title track, "Singing in the Rain".[20]

On July 12, the eighth member, Choerry, was revealed.[21] On July 28, Choerry's single album was released, with its title track, "Love Cherry Motion". The music video features Yeojin and Haseul as well as Kim Lip and Jinsoul. The music video was filmed in Jeju Island. As part of Choerry's single the song "Puzzle" was released in which she collaborates with Jinsoul.

  • JinSoul (Hangul: 진솔), born Jung Jin-sol (Hangul: 정진솔) on (1997-06-13) June 13, 1997 (age 27), in South Korea, is the June Girl and is represented by a fish and the colour blue.
  • HaSeul (Hangul: 하슬), born Jo Ha-seul (Hangul: 조하슬) on (1997-08-18) August 18, 1997 (age 27), in South Korea, is the December Girl and is represented by a bird and the colour green. She is the leader of the sub-unit LOOΠΔ 1/3.
  • Kim Lip (Hangul: 김립), born Kim Jung-eun (Hangul: 김정은) on (1999-02-10) February 10, 1999 (age 25), in South Korea, is the May Girl and is represented by an owl and the colour red.
  • HeeJin (Hangul: 희진), born Jeon Hee-jin (Hangul: 전희진) on (2000-10-19) October 19, 2000 (age 24), in South Korea, is the group's leader and October Girl, and is represented by a rabbit and the colour bright pink.
  • HyunJin (Hangul: 현진), born Kim Hyun-jin (Hangul: 김현진) on (2000-11-15) November 15, 2000 (age 23), in South Korea, is the November Girl and is represented by a cat and the colour yellow.
  • Choerry (Hangul: 최리), born Choi Ye-rim (Hangul: 최예림) on (2001-06-04) June 4, 2001 (age 23), in South Korea, is the July Girl and is represented by a bat and the colour purple.

Endorsements

On January 19, 2017, Blockberry Creative announced that Loona became the new models of cosmetics brand, Innisfree. They will feature in Innisfree advertisements and be published in HighCut magazine monthly.[66]
