Federica Marchionni (born December 23, 1971) is a well-known top business executive.[1][2][3][4]
She served from February 2015 to September 2016 as CEO of American clothing online retailer Lands' End, becoming the first Italian woman to lead an American company listed on Wall Street.[5]
Marchionni has been profiled in different media, including Bloomberg[6], Forbes[7][8], the New York Times[9], Glamour[10], Business Insider[11] and InStyle.[12]
She has lectured at Harvard and Stanford University,[13][14] and has been a guest speaker at the Milken Global Conference[15] and Fortune MPW Summit.[16]
Early life
Marchionni graduated summa cum laude from Sapienza University of Rome with a Master's degree in Business Administration.[17] She also studied in France and the U.K. and is fluent in four languages.[17][18]
Career
Marchionni is the first Italian woman to have lead an American company listed on Wall Street.[5][19] In February 2015, she became CEO of Lands' End, a $1.4 Billion company with approximately 85% of the business in ecommerce, 6,000 employees, and subsidiaries in the UK, Germany, Japan. She spearheaded efforts to transform a legacy company.[9][20] She resigned from her position at Lands' End in September 2016.[21]
Marchionni worked for over a decade at Dolce&Gabbana headquarters. Most recently, she served as the President of Dolce & Gabbana USA Inc.[22][23]
Before moving to the U.S. Marchionni held a position as SVP at Ferrari supervising the Brand business unit at Ferrari.[9][22][16]
Marchionni started her career in the telecommunications industry, working for global players such as Samsung Electronics, Philips Consumer Communications and Ericsson.[9]
Honors and Awards
Marchionni was named one of 25 "Power Women" by New York Moves magazine.[24] In 2015 Marchionni was Awarded for her contribution to the Culture & Business by the American-Italian Chamber of Commerce.[25] In 2016, Marchionni was one of two Italian-American honorees at New York City's Columbus Day Parade,[26] and was honored by the Columbus Citizens Foundation.[27]
Advocacy
Marchionni is an advocate for corporate social responsibility.[1]
Marchionni is an advocate of sustainability initiatives,[28] and was instrumental in creating the Lands' Friendly initiative at Lands' End.[2]
Marchionni has long been dedicated to women's causes.[4][1] In February 2016, Marchionni interviewed feminist activist Gloria Steinem for the Lands' End catalog and website. After an outcry from customers with pro-life sentiments, the company removed Steinem's interview from the website, stating on its Facebook page: "It was never our intention to raise a divisive political or religious issue, so when some of our customers saw the recent promotion that way, we heard them. We sincerely apologize for any offense." The company consequently faced criticism online and boycott threats, both from customers who were still unhappy that Steinem had been featured in the first place, and from customers who were unhappy that Steinem's interview had been removed.[29][30]
Marchionni has written for Time on new ways to measure prosperity.[31]
Philanthropy
Federica Marchionni advocates for many causes, including poverty eradication. .[32]
She attended the Global Forum in Rome,[32] headlined by the Pope, where she met with other Fortune 500 leaders, scholars and philanthropists to discuss the best ways to combat global poverty.[33]
She in active in, and has been honored by, the Columbus Citizens Foundation,[27] which provides over 700 scholarships at elementary, high school and college level to Italian-American students who have academic ability but lack financial means.
She serves on the advisory council of Acumen.[17]
Marchionni was a member of the Corporate Fund Board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.[34][35]
Personal life
Marchionni is married with one son, Gabriel.[36]
