Iranian Graphic Designers Society (IGDS): Is the first official, legal and independent society for Iranian graphic designers, it was registered in Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare in 1997; and it has been a member of International Council of Design (ico-D) since 2002. Background
First steps to establish a society for Iranian graphic designers was taken in 1976; after Iranian revolution in 1979 and Iran-Iraq war, it took another turn. In early years of revolution most graphic designers were engaged in national affairs and issues, therefore graphic design was used for revolutionary goals. Until 1985 when the first step for this profession was taken by a group of graphic designers through publishing the first tariff classification for various graphic design works. They held the first Iraninan Graphic Design Biennial in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in 1987 by the support and cooperation of govermental organizations. This exhibition was the greatest gathering of Iranian graphic designers since Fifty years of Iranian Graphic exhibition in 1976. After holding a successful exhibition, they started to establish a cooperative to attain the graphic designers’ requirements. But since this cooperative couldn’t fulfill the designers expectations, after a year and a half, by having the support of notable number of graphic designers and through an official and legal procedure, the cooperative founding board, registered and established the Iranian Graphic Designers Society in October 1997.
Goals
The main purpose of establishing this society was to create a professional association for Iranian graphic designers and to give an owerview of graphic design to Iranians. Therefor one of the most important achievements of this society was to formalize this profession which in turn led to further attainments.
