Athens Music Week is an annual international music festival and conference that takes place every year in Athens. Its activities include talks, presentations, workshops and concerts[1][2]. It is addressed to young or emerging artists and professionals from the music, cultural and creative Industries[3] such as promoters, artist managers, executives of cultural venues and institutions, companies, networks and organisations, visual and sound technicians, new media specialists, radio producers, sound engineers, music producers, academics and audiences from various countries[4][5].
Context
[edit]Athens Music Week was founded in 2018 and was organized for the first time in 2019[6], by Georges Perot [7], founder of the Non-profit NGO Music Events Coordination Organization (MESO Events), on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the European Music Day in Greece. [8].
The core values of the organisation are receptiveness, creativity, equality and team spirit. Athens Music Week (AMW) aims at: the international promotion of local music, the promotion and exploration of the contemporary urban lifestyle in Greece, the exchange of know-how and the development of innovative approach for the sustainable growth of the Music Sector.[9] Since 2020, AMW is co-organized by Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens and MESO Events.[10]
The first event was organized with the participation of artists and professionals such as journalists and producers from various countries and included musical events, speeches and seminars in areas of the Municipality of Athens.[10] Due to the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition was held in the form of online and physical events (talks, webinars, presentations, etc.), with the participation of 50 speakers and 28 artists and with themes related to the challenges faced by the music industry in the era of the coronavirus.[11][12][13]
In the 2021 edition, Athens Music Week focused mainly on the relationship between the music industry and the τechnology and web related sectors through presentations, webinars and workshops with speakers from various sectors [14][15][16] as well as a live concert with the participation of emerging Greek and foreign artists from different musical genres.[17][12][16][18][19][20][21]
In 2022[22], After two years of presence in phygital form, Athens Music Week (AMW) took place from the 22nd to the 24th of June at Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens with a three-day event with 60 different activities that included showcase concerts, discussions, workshops, parties and of course the Live stage on the main stage of theTechnopolis City of Athens!
In 2023, for its 5th edition, Athens Music Week was organized from May 29 to June 1, with a programme including 42 panels, presentations, roundtables and talks, with the participation of 130 speakers from 29 countries, 13 workshops and 32 concerts. The live music events started with an opening party at the Great Bear Rooftop, and continued for 2 nights at Boiler, Crust and Six d.o.g.s. The program closed with the festival live show at the Technopolis Main Stage
Among the 540 invited speakers and artists who have participated in the organization of Athens Music Week until 2023 are the following guest speakers Eric Burdon, Shabaka Hutchings,[17][23] Michael Petychakis, Dimitra Galani, Υvan Boudillet, Chris Cooke, Katerina Evaguelatou, Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt, Marina Satti, Nikolas Giatromanolakis, Melanie Parejo,[24] Panos Mouzourakis, Ian Stratis[25] and artists such as Fundracar, Saske, Hey! Douglas (TR), Good Job Nicky, Rammenos Assos, Christos Kalkanis, Zulu 3.4 (MK), Baildsa, Puuluup (EE), Θραξ Πανκ, Funkorporation (RO), Nalyssa Green, Pink Vanity, Μαρία Παπαγεωργίου, ΖΕΝ (Barrice), Babo Koro, Paidi Travma etc.[21]
