Freda Meissner-Blau was born in Dresden on 11 March 1927 as the youngest of four children. She grew up in a liberal, educated household and enjoyed nature, culture, and art. Freda Blau-Meissner’s opposition to the nuclear industry began during the 1950s, when a group was formed against the Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant in 1978. Shortly thereafter the parliament enacted a law prohibiting the use of nuclear fission in Austria to supply energy. In 2007 Freda Meissner-Blau received the Nuclear-Free Future Lifetime Achievement Award.[1]
